To vanmacguy, and everyone else not living in Toronto, how is the wifi network in your city? The times I have been in Toronto, the lack of free/paid wifi spots (when compared to other US cities) is staggering.

Aside from coffee shops like Starbucks that charges, there are few if any accessible wifi spots.

It's pretty much the same in Vancouver. We do have a lot of coffee shops and such that offer free wi-fi, so it really depends what part of town you're in.

But here's the kicker - he tells me he has heard from tech people that Telus's new network is going to be GSM and they have something like a $150 million "phone replacement fund" ready, I would guess to replace existing customer phones. Now I've never used Telus, but wouldn't that be a kick to Rogers - For Telus to announce a new GSM network and be the Canadian iPhone provider?

That would be great! I was a Telus customer for years until my company forced me onto Rogers and I always thought their coverage was far superior. They reach further out from the main cities than Rogers.

I was wondering if someone else was going to step up and steal the deal from the 'lock in' (Rogers), this would be great. And yeah, a huge kick in the pants for Rogers.

Buy one, unlock it, give Rogers the bird.

Cheers.

BTW, great thread, thanks for giving us Canucks somewhere to vent.

IF Telus went GSM Rogers would be in some major trouble....Telus seems to have the American plans then Rogers follows...Waiting for rollover minutes!

Quick shout out from Winnipeg, rockin the iPhone on Rogers. I only know of 2 other unlocked iPhones in Winnipeg, one of which I bought for a friend anyways. Anyone else around these parts from the peg?

I would love to see Telus come out with a GSM network, someone has to. The only other option I can see is Shaw. It makes sense for them to get into the market seeing as all their competitors are, and I think they would be great for a cell phone provider. Their customer service (in my opinion) is already pretty good, and their service (in Winnipeg, not so much in Edmonton or Calgary) is rock solid. I just hope if they ever do venture into Cell Phones, they go GSM, and use their own network. I could see them sticking with their existing Bell partnerships and using the Bell network.

We need more Competition. Maybe Google or Virgin could help us out!

Hi can someone please help me with a question? I need to know if I just use the iphone on my wireless and do not disable the edge will it still rack up net charges through rogers? I do plan on getting a very small data plan with rogers for the occasional email. I am getting my unlocked iphone tomorrow and have to sign up with rogers. thanxs in advance.

Is anyone out there that is using Rogers unlocked using it with a Data plan?

Or are all of you using it with no data plan, and are you turning off the "Edge settings somehow?

Has anyone gotten their first Rogers phone bill since unlocking?

You have to enable EDGE settings for it to connect using EDGE
I have heard elsewhere these settings are:
APN: internet.com
Username: guest
Password: guest

I plan on getting a data plan with Rogers, but currently do not - phone service is fine, and all other data is sent when I am connected by wifi.

Rogers can only charge you for their services - if you transmit data through wifi, you will not be charged by Rogers.

There are usage readings on the iPhone, indicating the amount of data sent and received through EDGE.

Well I purchased my iPhone unlocked, but it has been working just fine with 7.4.2

Wow!!!

First, I don't have a DATA plan with Rogers. I have only signed a 3 years contract with them in October 2006 (phone+voice mail). I have tried these setting:

APN: internet.com
Username: wap@rogers.com
Password: guest

Edge is working. Will I get charged. I should not be charged since I did bond with a data plan right?

How can this work?

DO NOT DO THIS.

You will be charged like $9/MB or something insane. At least get the 10 MB for $10 package.

I'm with Fido and waiting on my iPhone, should be any day now.. Does anyone know if text messaging uses the EDGE network? I don't plan on using data while I'm away from wifi so if texting doesn't go over EDGE, then I won't even bother entering the EDGE settings so there's no way I can be accidentally charged

I'm sure Sobe didn't mean to make you laugh since most of his postings are negative.

I hear that some wireless Rogers people were grumbling about the lack of 3G on the iPhone at one of their meetings when someone asked when the iPhone would come to Canada.

I don’t think 3G alone would stop it from coming to Canada as there are other issues Rogers may not be interested in solving – like outrages data pricing. Apple seems to negotiate data pricing when dealing with wireless providers and Rogers has no reason to reduce their rates since there is no competition. (Thanks to CRTC) There may also be something set up between RIM and Rogers that may prevent them form brining it to Canada. Crack berries are being advertised by Rogers like nothing I have ever seen before.

Where was the CRTC when Rogers bought up Fido a year or so back?? Being the only viable GSM provider, why weren't the sale prevented to prevent a monopoly?

I am sure RIM and Rogers have a close relationships, since RIM is out of Waterloo. But still, I think the iPhone will give RIM a kick in the butt. Their handhelds are lacking, even the Pearl is pale in comparison to the iPhone.

Attention all Canuckleheads!

Go here:

Do it now. Now I say.

WOW! That is the most amazing article I have seen so far that explains the sad state of Canadian wireless competition. I have been voicing my opinion about this for a while and hopefully Quebecor can make some noise at CRTC and breakup the big three club.

The latest public speech of Pierre Karl Péladeau, President and Chief Executive Officer of Quebecor Inc. is a must read for any one wondering why the iPhone is not coming to Canada.

Yahoo PUSH does not work on Rogers. I tried everything, even creating a brand new yahoo.com account.

My 10MB for $10 didn't last very long. So I've decided to leave Mail checking on Manual till the iPhone comes to Canada... or should I say, IF.

I am planning on going to Buffalo to get another iPhone. My brother in law wanted my current one so badly, I had to sell it to him... Anyhow. Hope the newer batch are not firmware v1.1.1.

By the way, someone mentioned that Telus is going to go GSM. I think this is completely wrong. What may happen instead is that as Telus upgrades to 3G, they may use LTE (Long Term Evolution) which supports legacy modes like CDMA, and GSM. For more reading.

I know that Bell received iPhones for testing right after they were released in the US. A friend of mine told me they were testing them using LTE in Faraday cages.

Anyhow, time to sleep.
