I have some female friends who are obsessed, so I finally read the books. They aren't as horrid as I expected, taking into consideration the target audience of tween girls. Nowhere near as polished and fleshed out as the Harry Potter books, which aren't pandering and condescending like many young adult novels. I thought the romance angle was a bit over the top, most times sounding like a ten-year-old's vision of what teenage love will be like. I really enjoyed the vampire and werewolf lore, I thought there were some very interesting takes on vampiric abilities and ancestry. I wasn't impressed with the movie, I found the portrayals of the characters dull and uninteresting. I've seen some of the actors in other films, and they do have some talent, they just didn't get to show it in this film. All-in-all, I'm not exactly a fan, but I'm not a hater, I'll be seeing New Moon when it comes out.

I think that's a great interpretation of both the books and the film. The books were really good in my opinion, but full of crazy amounts of sappy "romance" that is indeed straight of the mind of a pre-teen. What's sad is that it was written by a grown woman, but I don't even want to throw out condescending theories on why that is. :p

I'm really torn on whether or not I'll see "New Moon". I've read and loved every book, but I really disliked the "Twilight" movie. I know, people always complain that the book is better then the movie, but... seriously. Didn't compare. Not sure if this one can do much better.

I don't think its sappy and pre-teen at all. It very closely follows and portrays how I fell in love with my fiance when I was 15 (minus the whole vampire thing, I was thinking the instant attraction, falling head over heels in love without understanding why, etc etc). It depicts true love at that age very well, I think. My theory is that Stephenie Meyer experienced that and wrote it into her book.

Just my observations after having read all 4 books and having seen the movie too

Books are always better than movies... very few exceptions to the rule

The books are most definitely geared to teen girls
If you keep the target audience in mind, you can forgive the excesses in sentimentality and the simplistic writing style

There are long stretches of yawns in the books... but there is some good action at times

Bella was OK in the movie
Edward was awful... casting/acting/you name it
Jacob was not much better

New Moon needs to hit a home run or the movies will drop of dramatically

Same here. I read the books mainly because my ex gf was gagga over 'em and I am a Lit major so I figured, "whatever". Found the series to be quite good, however the translation to film has been horrid so far.

I'll admit it, I'll probably be one of the first few movie go-ers to see New Moon, the trailer looks pretty good. I enjoyed the series but at one point I was planning on nixing the remainder. Twilight, it wasn't the best but I've seen worst. New Moon looks a whole lot better (from what I've seen of it)
