I'm sure it'll never happen on the iphone, but I'm still wishing for the blackberry/android-type google voice integration where your google voice number works with the native phone/sms/voicemail apps. It's hard to make a full transition to google voice when you still have to route everything through a dedicated app. Baby steps though...

I simply moved my native Phone icon to the last home page and stuck the Google app icon on the dock in its place. It feels very native.

yeah it's awesome man.

we dumped $30 texting plan from AT&T recently and used GV+ app which sucked. so glad this one came out finally.

I just tried the texting support within the google voice app. It's damn slow. I just have a few messages in there, but they take seconds to load. I won't be getting rid of my SMS support if the alternatives are this bad.

Is anyone else having the same experience?

Too bad they won't support the iPod Touch and iPad. Other than that, it's great.

Would it be possible to run a modified version of this app on a jail-broken iPod or iPad?

Has anyone experiencing quick dial contact photo being all messed up? I just tried to load about ten contact to the quick dial and the contact photos are all mixed up...:(

I didn't notice this until you said something, but yep, in quick dial the photos are all assigned to the wrong contact. Kind of comical to see my younger sister's face on the guy I carpool with from work's number.

Yeah, I have the same issue. Google forgot to beta test this app. :)

i assume that google voice calls are billed as pay minutes vs m2m (when the latter would normally apply), yes?

If you add your google voice number to your A list the calls are free. You have to disable the caller id in google. I put about 1000 minutes a month in addition to my regular voice plan.

Actually, that trick doesn't work anymore because GV dials direct access numbers and not just that google voice number. You will still end up using your minutes no matter what.

Most of your calls will be placed via Direct Access Numbers, making them connect just as quickly as regular phone calls

With direct access numbers, we assign a unique phone number to every person you call. This means that we no longer need to use your data network to access the server each time you make a call, so calls will be placed much faster.

You can do VOIP from the desktop so I was hoping for it on the app. Maybe GV mobile+ will make that happen.

Awesome! Makes up for Apple's lame announcement this morning. :)

Agreed

So, this is not a universal app with iPod Touch and iPad support?

I'm pretty excited about it, but having it support WiFi operation would make it a killer app for me.

Well, off to download this and see how it works on my phone.

Looks like it is not available in Canada yet... I wonder why. CV mobile + have been here here for quite a while...

Sell me!

Ok, I set up a google voice number a few months ago, but have never used it. Can someone please tell me why I should use it, and this Google Voice App?

What does it do that my iPhone can't? I'm curious.

What's the excitement about? The google number you need to call will still be out of your monthly minutes on an ATT phone, so you'd rather call the number directly don't know what the fuss's all about.

Can't wait for all the "excited" dumb a***s to come back here crying when they get a fat bill from ATT after they've dialed up the google voice number thinking its free.

How can it support ipod touch or the ipad when neither can make a phone call.

Problem with push notifications

Anyone else noticed a problem with the push notifications? I turned off the text and email alerts — I figured the voicemail notification push would be enough. After all, you don't need to be alerted three different ways when you receive voicemail.

When someone leaves me a voicemail, the push notification with the transcription appears for just half a second -- then it's immediately replaced by the iPhone's native "1 missed call" notification. I can never see the transcription again until I launch the Google Voice app. I don't even have a chance to read it before it disappears.

Is there any way to fix that? I suppose to work around it I could turn off the Push notification and leave the SMS text alert on, but the text alert doesn't have buttons to link me into the native Google Voice app.

Use the other GV apps that support non-direct dialing. The official one as you said doesn't support this trick, but the other apps do!

YAY! I love Google Voice and it's ability to give me a 2nd line for my buisness right on my iPhone. Now if google would update the app with a quicker way to switch between accounts only then would this app be complete for me :)

Half assed effort:
-No character count in SMS window
-No ability to copy text contents at all
-Inconsistent with rest of iOS UI - make a spelling mistake on the last word, a correction should appear, hitting Send should Apply that correction, not cancel it
-UI Is slow overall. SMS do not refresh, even in official multitasking mode unless you go back to main SMS screen then back to conversation (doesn't refresh in jailbroken Backgrounder multitasking either)
-SMS screen will take forever if you have a lot of texts
-Google still hasn't learned to organize texts like iPhone's SMS app - by person, not by the weird data/conversation thing which is pretty flaky
-Inability to not page a phone with the app. Consequently, it's not clear what the ph # does in the app, because you can enter all kinds of bogus numbers. Not having a number locks out the rest of the app.
-Takes forever to load on non-3G. GV Mobile+ in comparison is faster, although GVM+'s UI is not so good :)
-No support for multiple accounts.
-No customization for push, or customization of anything that I can see. No availability of settings in web incarnation in app

Simple SMS equivalency. Is that asking a lot?

Am I the only person who's missing the ability to choose what number(s) to forward to? I loved being able to do that via the mobile GV site. Seems weird that they would leave this out of the native app.

Also, when I go to 'Settings' (in the native app) and select 'This Phone' it just shows me my numbers. What, exactly, am I accomplishing by selecting any of them? Can someone shed some light? Thanks!
