Voip

I noticed that Google Voice recently made GoogleTalk (their voice and/or text chat service) a call back or forwarding option.

If there was a GoogleTalk app that supported voice chatting then you could actually use Google Voice as a VOIP service. An incoming call could forward to GoogleTalk and if it had push notification it could "ring" your iPhone or iPod touch or even iPad. An initiated call would first "call" you back on GoogleTalk and then complete the phone call to your desired recipient. I would guess it's just a matter of time before this happens. Getting the app approved and in the store was step one....now they can push it further.

Crap

Rubbish!

It's not available in the Danish App Store and probably not in any App store in Europe. Why wont Google release the App to us as well?!?

cant you log into google voice on the web and turn the text forwarding off now, and see if they come straight through to the voice app now?

I fixed this problem by going into GV settings on my desktop and clicking the Phones tab. Then click the Edit button for your iPhone number and uncheck "Receive text messages on this phone"

I like the app fine, but it's a little unstable when it comes to the texting aspect. If it weren't for the fast push service I'd probably just go back to Infinite SMS GV.

Also the quick dial list is screwed up.

Scratch that... I only want VM push notifications but doesn't look like you can select what you want notifications for. Don't need text notifications as I use SMS GV extension. Terrible app Google.

What do you mean by SMS GV extension? Do you mean that you have GV set up to forward texts to your cell phone number? If so, then just turn that off and take advantage of getting them by push to the new app. It will save you the charge for an SMS. You can now drop your SMS plan with ATT and only send/receive texts through Google Voice without any text charges.

Yes!

This is more likely the reason why I won't forget today! I've have been craving this app more than any other. FINALLY!:D

I'm surprised that Google didn't bundle this into the Google Mobile app. I suppose they wanted user to be able to replace the stock dialer icon.

I had the same issue. You need to edit the phone settings from the Desktop Google Voice site. I was unable to make this change from the mobile or iPhone optimized sites...
You can get to the desktop site from your phone by going to the iPhone site, selecting "older site" at the bottom. Once you are in the older mobile site, there is a link to the desktop version at the bottom.
From the desktop version, go to settings (from the upper right) and select the Phones tab. From here you can edit the phone settings and uncheck the txt forwarding.

double sms

i have gv pointed to my iphone.

if someone sends a text to the gv number, it gets forwarded to my phone, plus it gets pushed to the app too.

can i get it to not forward it to my phone?

Where are all the fanboys bashing this because the name Google's attached to it?

Well, it just goes to show you that the "fanboys" are more open minded than you thought.

But thanks for coming to play:

Google voice is pointless. It uses cell minutes, and it dials a bunch of different phone numbers instead of 1 single number. You can't use it to save on your cell phone minutes. ok it has free texting, so do a hundred other apps in the app store. What's the point? single point of contact? big whoop. This app is a big steaming pile of disappointment.

Just to update:
This app does not work on ipod touches even the new 4th gen:mad:

Sadly, the way it's built right now, it requires the phone. There is no voip.
That means running on an iPod make no sense for it today. Hopefully this changes in a future version.

If you use it to replace your stock dialer, it's a pretty feature rich drop-in replacement. You get free SMS, voicemail to text, phone number portability, complex forwarding rules, call screening, call recording...
But I get your point. Unless you really commit to using your GV number exclusively, it's hard to get the benefits.

Actually, it does make sense to be able to use Google Voice on an iPod touch/iPad because some people use Skype and/or Gizmo5 which, when used with an iPod touch/iPad, would allow calls to be made very inexpensively or for free.

Skype calls with Google Voice would be great. Gizmo5 calls on an iPod touch/iPad need the Google Voice app to work on them.

Hopefully that functionality comes soon with integration of GoogleTalk voice chatting. You can direct your GV # to a computer using GoogleTalk now....seems a logical extension would be to phones and portable web devices like touches and iPads.....UNLESS Google finds itself getting pressure from all the mobile providers! Now it's not just AT&T who can complain, but Verizon, et al. because the capability would come to Android as well.
