You don't think it is a bit too dictatorial?
I don't think it is unreasonable to ask people to do one mile per week (or day), especially since they already have signed up to participate in a 25,000 mile challenge.
However, I am a bit worried how people would take a request like that. It could perhaps lead to some drop outs. I don't know.

it could, but seriously, 1 mile a week isn't much at all. in fact, most people walk that in a day, just not with their ipod.

the question is how can we get the message to the people?

Come on, now - this is a voluntary exercise. Some take it more seriously than othes. I do not think pulling out a "McCarthy type list" is a good thing. Positive encouragement is what is needed. This is not the military ;) I say patience and give it a chance the weather is turning and I have a good feeling that the miles will be going up.

Hi all.

First off, I've checked with Ziwi and this post has been Okayed.

As you are all keen runners I thought you'd like to keep up to date with the efforts of Dave Heeley.

Dave is in the middle of his second marathon in Rio which forms part of his 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days.

He finished his first one in 4 hours 15 minutes on the Falkland Islands.

After Rio it's over to LA then on to Sydney after that he's in Dubai then Tunis and finally finishing on Sunday in the London marathon.

If you are in one of the cities Dave is running may be you could give him some support.

Oh one more thing, Dave is blind and is trying to raise £100,000 for the guide dogs.

I've started a thread on this in the current events forum link

Thanks for your time

Scott

well that is true, but at this rate we won't make the goal. i feel like we should at least be trying to encourage everyone to run more. maybe start posting the stats of the overall goal and how far we are behind?

I agree. The 25K challenge is an ambitious one, as we knew when we started. If we can't do it then we can't do it. Browbeating people in to running more isn't what this is all about. IMO what we need to do is get more people to join. I'm sure there are lots of runners on MR who are not part of these challenges yet; they are the keys to getting this done.

For my part, my knee has been seriously limiting me. I'm doing cross training instead of running several times a week, and my runs are not as long as they would otherwise be. I'm doing all I can to heal, but knees are slow healers...

i agree, but we aren't really motivating the ones that need motivating. clearly there are some who are not logging miles, and we need to at least try to motivate them, which is really what this is about: giving people motivation to run.

hope your knee gets better

I am sure you are right, The thing is we need to do something or we will fail. I am all for getting new runners. the question is how do we do it?

I feel for you. I hope you will get better before the marathon. The race is first in a moth or so, right? There is still time for your knees to heal so just go easy on them.

that's a good question. i'm not sure what we can do. one thing is to keep talking about the challenge, and hopefully more people will see it and get involved

Thanks guys. The marathon is in 13 days, unfortunately (it's Boston). I did over 12 today and the knee felt Ok, but not good enough to go another 14 miles. I'm cautiously optimistic.

oh wow. 13 days. my girlfriend is actually trying to run one the week after that, in Nashville.

good luck to you. at least you felt alright with 12 today. maybe it'll hold up for another 13 days

Just let you knee rest as much as possible and hope for the best. I think you should be optimistic (touch wood).

Slightly off topic.

A runner friend of mine recommended me to eat Tri Flex to protect my joints. It is suppose to help the joints to handle the abuse. Have any of you guys used it? I am (more than) a bit cautious to take meds before I actually need it, so need some advice here.

There is a delayed gratification from waiting a year before you know whether you made the challenge might be a bit too much. What about weekly/monthly/quarterly challenges? Run 25/50/100/150 miles in ....? People could get a personal goal every week/month/quarter. They could set their goal at whatever pace they felt comfortable with. What do you think Ziwi?

We did that last year - we had monthly ones and quarterly ones and thought on top of that let's do an annual one - My original thought was 20,000 miles based on the math I broke out last year. I was talked into the 25,000 ;) and by default that made it an actual Challenge vs. just putting out a number you could hit.

As far as monthly and quarterly challenges -I set up quarterly 5k's and 10k's and monthly challenges each month - what more are you looking for?

We need miles. we all agree on that. The question is how do we do it.
If you run about 10 miles per month, it could be hard to motivate yourself doing 25 miles when there are runners like e.g. Twood and yourself in the race. The difference between 10 miles/month and 25 miles/month when you have people doing 250 miles/month could by many people be perceived as negligible. Moreover, the distance of 25,000 miles is very hard to comprehend no matter if you do 10 miles/month or 250 miles/month. However, if we were to introduce obtainable goals like, "run 10 miles this month" and "run 25 miles per month" it might encourage some (all?) runners to put in more miles per month.
Hence I think we should try to introduce 10/25/50/100/250 miles goals over a 30 alt. 14 day period.

Alternatively: Persuade mispeedy and arihara to to join the challenge, and we can all have a vacation.

i've never taken it. i only take meds if i absolutely need them. which isn't very often

well, can someone, not necessarily you, give us updates on the challenges more frequently? that way maybe people will see that we are behind and might get more involved

Thanks again. I've accepted that the time will not be what I was hoping for, thanks to this injury. At this point I just want to finish respectably.

I've never used it, and like twood, I'd be hesitant to take anything before I needed it.

Who?

Go for it! :p

here goes nothing:

as of this posting, we have 6,565.47 miles in exactly 100 days.

there are 366 days this year. so as a group, we need 68.31 miles a day.

right now we should be at 6,830.6 miles. so we are 265.13 miles off right now.

we have 62 runners signed up. that means we need to average 1.11 miles per runner per day to reach the goal.

we have 11 runners that have a total of under 10 miles for the year. another 7 that are under a total of 20. we need all these people to step it up, even just a little, if we're going to make it.

even if all you can do is walk a mile a day, that's some exercise for you.
