Maybe since Apple is pushing their magnetic plug in one of the new ads, it hints that the new MBP's will have the features that the MacBook got back in May.

wish apple would pony up and do a 1920x1200 like that toshiba...

From all that I can tell, we probably wont see uber-resolution displays until Leopard, so that Apple can utilize the scaled UI features.

Until then, they don't appear to want to sacrifice screen quality (changing the resolution and dealing with horrible LCD scaling) for those users who can't handle high resolutions... a good deal of the users

Would be nice to have it as some sort of a BTO option though...

I just bought this today at my local Apple Store in anticipation of receiving my new 2.33mhz MBP 17".

I'm a 36 year old man and I still use backpacks instead of briefcases. When will I ever grow up? :)

At first, I thought you had bought the MBP in anticipation of an upgrade tomorrow. I thought that was the strongest move I had ever seen...buying ahead of the inevitable upgrade.

But a backpack is cool too, especially this one...

Again, come on now...... it's not a question of whether people grasp it. It's question of who finds it funny and who doesn't. It's possible to "grasp" a joke and still not find it funny once it has been done to death. Just because someone doesn't think it is funny doesn't mean you have to insult their intelligence by saying they just don't "grasp" it.

I know a joke that will get on your nerves... get on your nerves...

New look

I just hope that they update the case whenever Merom debuts. The silver is looking a little dated. Here is hoping for more user replacable parts.

Uhh... Don't all iMacs have bluetooth and airport built in?
Therefore all you need is the keyboard and mouse...

Crappy 2MB? LOL! So that automatically makes the current iMacs crap.

Allendale chips are crippled Conroes, with half the cache. I certainly wouldn't put money down for one. In relation to when they are released 2Mb will be crappy, 4Mb will be the standard.

And an X1650 Pro is a brand new card? 600 MHz core/ 700 MHz memory clocks (Apple will probably underclock it though ) and 12 pixel pipes and great bang-for-buck makes the X1650 Pro the card of choice.

A brand new bargain basement card that will have trouble running many new games in 2007, heck it has trouble with Oblivion which was released last March. It has an amazing 10Mhz speed bump over the previous X1600 and costs $99 to buy for us and probably next to nothing for Apple. Not only that but knowing Apple they would probably underclock it and half the RAM making it worse than a crappy year old baseline PC card. They really do spoil us on a premium computer, don't they?

Like I said: An X1650 in a new "premium" computer in 2007 would be an utter joke.

You mean only all-in-one. And how is it crippled? You want the GMA 950 from a MacBook?

No, I mean having a desktop in a "laptop" form factor that therefore must use laptop components. Like using laptop CPUs and laptop GPU's which are not only worse than their desktop counterparts but more expensive. And you don't get the advantages of having a portable that can run off battery.

The iMac can and should be more than that. I'm in the market for an Apple desktop, however I need more power than the current iMac (or what you propose) and a Mac Pro would be overkill. Unless Apple release a new product line they don't have what I (and many others) need: A decently specced desktop. Hence all the cries for the "ultra" iMac, or "pizza box Mac".

You'll be pushing up prices as well as getting into Mac Pro's territory. A low-end X1800 is a possibilty but considering Apple's track record for graphics cards, unlikely.

So Apple price their machines against their other products, and ignore the competition? The iMac should be a crippled desktop so they can over-charge for Macbook Pros? Don't forget that desktop components are far cheaper than their laptop equivalents, and it wont need an expensive battery. So if the iMac uses Conroe alone with a few other desktop components there is no reason why it shouldn't piss all over the Macbook Pro in terms of specs... Unless, of course, Apple artificially inflate prices (which is what you're suggesting). In which case your money would be better spent on a PC.

At WWDC Apple kept saying "let's bust the myth that Macs are more expensive", and they've done that with the Macbook and Mac Pro. Having specs like yours on a premium desktop at the end of 2006/early 2007 would be a complete joke. I certainly wont be buying your iMac.

And it wouldn't push up prices compared to the Macbook. Conroes are significantly cheaper than Meroms, and are faster to boot. Yonahs and Meroms are priced similarly (for when they launched). I would be very surprised if the 2.4Ghz Conroe is much more expensive than what Apple paid for the 1.83Ghz Yonah in Jan.

EDIT:E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz: Release price $316
T2400 Yonah 1.83GHz: Release price $294

Apple will be paying marginally more than what they paid for 1.83Ghz Yonahs. So why would that make any difference to the price?

And that's just at launch, as newer and better C2Ds are released prices will decrease and they can either upgrade or make more profit. How much would it even cost to make a well specced iMac?

17" iMac cost: $1,299

2.4Ghz conroe $316
1Gb RAM $120?
X1800 256Mb $180?
250Gb HDD $150?
LCD: $100?
Case & extras: $100?

20" iMac cost: $1,699

2.66Ghz conroe $600?
1Gb RAM $120?
X1800 512Mb $220?
500Gb HDD $240?
LCD: $150?
Case & extras: $100?

It is quite possible for Apple to make a competitive iMac and still make a decent profit.

Mac Mini: If you like liquid Mac Minis then sure I have even suggested that an Allendale Core 2 Duo along with a 3.5" HD should be put in the Mini but it would require a case redesign.

I said it was a possibility if they could get one in there. The Mac Mini is meant to be all about being cheap as possible, and using Merom in it will not help to lower the price.

Ah, your iMac - now that makes sense. I thought you wanted it for your MacBook Pro.

Well, today is the day!

Anyone taking bets on whether or not we will see the upgraded Apple line of notebooks today or the 12th of September? ;)

I'm gonna have to go with a "no." I would love for them to be updated today but I really think we are gonna have to wait just a little longer. It'd be pretty cool to be wrong for once though.

I would guess either Tuesday if they are ready to go...

I still pity those guys expecting "Major" MBP performance gain by moving to Merom without Santa Rosa. They are as ignorant as those people expecting G5s with their two pound heat sinks to go in powerbooks. I'm just looking forward to see Conroe iMac and better battery life for MBPs. And iPod update off course ;)

Only real morons think a tiny 20% increase in FSB will lead to major performance gains. Try putting 533Mhz modules in your Mini someday, and see how slow it runs.. oh wait, it doesn't make much of a difference.

The only real thing Santa Rosa has for it is pretty much only Robson caching.

That's some wacky dell pricing. The upgrades to 2.16 and 2.33 cost the same - why would anyone go with the slower for the same price?

I'm betting Apple starts the merom updates the day after the nano promotion expires. Minis could have an update sooner since they're not included in the promo.

lol. interesting options they have. would you like a 2.33 Merom for $460 extra or would you like a 2.33 Yonah for $810 extra? Or maybe a 2.33 Merom or 2.13 Merom, any will do, all the same price!

who the hell prices things at Dell?
Guess their hopeing for users thinking "Expensive is better!! Give me the one that costs the most"
I've met a lot of those people in the computer world.
