Guess their hopeing for users thinking "Expensive is better!! Give me the one that costs the most"
I've met a lot of those people in the computer world.

They're probably just trying to expunge their current stock of Core Duo systems with the hope that most consumers who buy Dells (usually those who aren't that computer literate, and not that there's anything wrong with that ;) ) don't know the difference between a Yonah and Yoda, between a merom and a mermaid. Between a Core Duo and a Core 2 Duo.

Most average computers users perceive a higher price tag therefore a better computer. I think Dell is really hoping the average user isn't savvy enough to realise that the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo has hardly any price difference and I think they are tring to cash in on the battery recall snafu.

No. Jeez guys, it's an error

Core Duo and Core 2 Duo are priced the same - notice how each upgrade MATCHES each other's price, except for the top end 2.33 GHz chip. Clearly, Dell f****** up :).

A lot of Core 2 Duo notebooks are popping up today on engadget. I guess its because intel OFFICIALLY announces the merom chips today.

Well, the 17" MBP I ordered last Thur arrived today, but I was not at home to sign for it. I thought it would be a Merom since the original delivery date was set for 8/1. :(

I ordered it online because I wanted to customize it (glossy screen, 100GB 7200rpm HD). Now that I've found out that glossy is not better than matte and that the additional speed of the 7200rpm is not that noticeable, I'll send it back and buy one from the local apple store.

The 14-day return policy is more important anyway, which you don't get when the buy custom. I'm sure I'll keep it; I just want to make sure I can run and install all my programs before I commit. If the Merom is not out in 14 days, I'll live since I really NEEDED another computer last week.

BTO's cannot be returned i thought...?

probably a duh... question, but how can you tell when you get a mpb merom, that you actually have a merom in it?

Does the System Profiler tell you its a core 2 duo, or merom, or is it some part #?

Core 2 Duo logo on the box for one...!

Rich.

I've been thinking about the same thing. But I would guess the system info tells you that you have a C2D.

That's why I'd rather buy one from the local store or online (standard, without any changes). It's hard to shell out $3K for your first MAC without the option of returning it.

Only real morons think a tiny 20% increase in FSB will lead to major performance gains. Try putting 533Mhz modules in your Mini someday, and see how slow it runs.. oh wait, it doesn't make much of a difference.

The only real thing Santa Rosa has for it is pretty much only Robson caching.

generik - "moron" may be a bit strong - but I agree that the total observed performance increase with Merom and eventually Santa Rosa chipset will not be earth shattering.

Many of the discussions make it sound as if we are purchasing a cpu and / or chipset instead of the total computer. I am more interested in seeing better cooling, easier hard drive replacement, magnetic latching, better GPU, improved structural integrity over the optical drive, etc. Over the years I have learned that the "tech specs" do not always translate into real world practical performance gains. Even the Robson caching will not improve my productivity - nice to have but not a "must" for me. All of this guessing will end shortly - just in time for the next round :)

A warning about Dell's choice in Help desk employees ... relates to product quality

I was the IT at my church, and one day when I was not available, one of the church members, who touted himself a PC expert, was there and the secretary, fairly computer illiterate, mentioned to him that her PC (Medion (yuck)) was running fairly slow.

I walked in the door a little later to find this guy at her desk on her office PC. I asked what was going on and he said he was speeding the machine up. Now mind you, as we get into this, that PC was used for church and the secretary's access to bank accounts and other sensitive information. I asked him how he was going about speeding it up, and he told me he was removing non-essential programs. I said, "OK, What programs?" He informed me that he was removing the virus protection, the Internet Security program, and all anti-spyware, claiming that he knew for certain this type of software was unnecessary. I flipped out and went to find the pastor in the building and asked him if he was aware that this 'expert' was opening the PC up to every hacker in the world. He said "No ...that the guy was the brother of a deacon and he (the pastor) was told that this guy was a PC genius. LOL.

The next day I recieved a phone call to please come to the church real quick ... that there were all kinds of alerts going on and things were popping up all over the PC screen on the church computer, and that they simply could not get rid of them fast enough to use the PC for church tasks. LOL... duh ... wonder why?

I went there and it took me 11 hours to straighten out the mess, and reinstall all of the protection again. I warned everyone in the church and all those who might ever approach the office door that NO ONE was to ever touch the PC except the secretary ever again, or the next time I had to do all of this it would cost them $250.00/hour. Guess what? No one ever again was allowed to use that PC except the pastor, his wife, and the secretary. And of course....yours truly.

(Now for the rest of the story)

In the next week or so, this 'expert' came to me beaming (like in ha ha I told you I am hot) and told me he was hired here in Nashville, TN at the Dell factory as a HELP DESK tech.

Now .... what do you think of Dell quality (?) ?

...and Conroe?

So Dell and HP etc. have computers with Merom officially announced now, but do other companies have the Conroe chip in their machines yet? Sorry if this is a silly question, but I couldn't find the answer, heh. I'm just waiting for the iMacs to be updated.

Love the anecdote, but this has to do with the C2D how....?
Anyway........................................................................
I'm getting impatient now. I really want to see a GOOD MacBook Pro release already so I can buy. All my excuses are gone. I'm ready. The credit card is ready. Now, I just need Apple to be ready. The fact that I might have to wait 7-10 days for it to be shipped is irrelevant to me. I want to order.

haha.... I knew some people that worked at Dell when I lived in nashville for undergrad. they were.... umm... haha. a little slow. but I wish that apple wouldn't be this slow in releasing the Core 2 Duo!!!!! argh. hopefully tomorrow. I wanna order this thing now!

You ordered it last Thurs (August 24th) and it arrived today?!?! Wow that was quick... or did I misunderstand?

now that Apple use the same CPU as Dell and HP
to be a real competitor, they should update their product when major components update as fast as Dell and HP.

Maybe when they upgrade the Core Duo with a Core 2 Duo, they'll call it the MacBook 2, and MacBook 2 Pro. Not likely, but that would be an easy way to distinguish between the two conversationally for those of us who care about the difference.

I noticed that C|Net already has two full reviews of Core 2 Duo laptop computers from Dell and Gateway. Of course, it's coincidental that they're also advertisers. :p

You're completely right. Why didn't I think of that in the first place? :)

Guys Dell does this all the time.....If you want to pay more to get less why should they stop you!

Note that when they are giving something away like free memory....the same memory is also on the list at the full price and the web page is defaulted to it...you have to change to the free amount to get the sale......standard Dell process here.....

Wow. Dell and HP already have Core 2 Duo. I was expecting that apple would get it first. But from the ads annouced lastnight, I don't think we will see MacBook Pros or any updates for that matter for another 2 weeks.
