My iMac shipped today (ordered 2 weeks ago, loaded) from China. Should arrive on Friday... Probably won't have the new chip... :(

Guys Dell does this all the time.....If you want to pay more to get less why should they stop you!

Note that when they are giving something away like free memory....the same memory is also on the list at the full price and the web page is defaulted to it...you have to change to the free amount to get the sale......standard Dell process here.....

Yeah, we know. Core 2 Duo sarcasm. :p

I don't have time to read the entire thread, so apologies if this has already been posted.

From the Mobile Core2 Duo: Performance at a Cost article on extremetech.com:

The mobile version is identical architecturally to the desktop Core2 Duo, but adds more aggressive power management. That's a good thing, as we'll see shortly, because the new CPU can run hotter when pushed hard than Intel's previous Core Duo mobile line.

Maybe that's why apple is taking so long? Because, no WAY can Merom go in to the current case if it runs even hotter the Yohane. We have all heard the problems and so has apple. The only way they can put Merom into them is with a new case design.

Dell Wants + $810 for 2.33GHz Yonah OR + $460 for 2.33GHz Merom • Your Choice

Dell is also on core 2 duo now.. apple - we're waiting ;)
Dell Precision M65 Customize Page

What's interesting to note about the upgrade prices is that the 2.33GHz Merom is the same upgrade price of + $460 that the 2.16GHz version is. Moreover, who would choose a Yonah over a Merom when they want the same upgrade prices and + $810 for a 2.33GHz Yonah. Twice the L2 cache for almost half the money. Makes no sense.

So the 2GHz Merom Dell will cost $1714 Vs. a 2GHz MacBook for $1299. Wow. Apple really is a lot cheaper than Dell even at the entry level of Mobiles.

Actually... it looks like it all depends on the manufacturer's design.. check out this article from PC Perspective!

MEROM

Looking good!! :D

Ever since Jobs' return, Apple has a tendency to announce new products on Tuesdays. Anyone that expected that Apple would make an announcement today, a Monday, just "because everyone else is doing it" doesn't get Apple. Apple does things their way, in their time. Now if we see no announcement tomorrow, then I would guess that they are waiting for the September show to make their announcement. But I agree, tomorrow would be better.

Anyone who purchased a Mac in the last week, hoping it would magically arrive with a Merom chip which Apple hasn't announced yet, is also living in the land of fairy tales. :)

You ordered it last Thurs (August 24th) and it arrived today?!?! Wow that was quick... or did I misunderstand?

That's right, I ordered it Thurs and it arrived today. Originally, it was supposed to ship tomorrow and arrive on Friday. If I decide to keep it and the only change in the new MBP is Merom, I won't feel too bad. But if it's a case redesign, I'll simply die!

At least with the current model, I know exactly what I'm getting myself into, due to the experience of millions of buyers before me. We probably will not see the real adv and disadv of Merom for a couple of months. I plan to really put this MBP to work and I don't need any extra heat!

Question: After I install Parrallels and install XP, can I then run MSFT virtual PC with about two virtual pcs? I'll have 2GB memory.

hahaha i have been wanting to say something like that since like page 4 of this thread...SO TRUE. Come on people. WAKE UP! Jeez!

Oh boy. I would dance the dance of light if apple annouced Merom tomorrow. Ship in November, i don't care. I just want to know when it's comeing out! (well, no I don't want it to ship in november, but if they were, the i want them to annouce it tomorrow) I can wait longer, but reading the rumors makes me want it bad. I didn't read the rumors for like a week and a bit and my mind was FREE of Merom MacBook Pros, now that's all I want!

So everyone with me
"Tomorrow! Tomorrow! Tomorrow! Tomorrow! Tomorrow! Tomorrow! Tomorrow! "

HP's C2D Offerings Make Apple's MacBook Look Even Better

HP has gone Core 2 Duo also. I'm guessing a launch on Tuesday by Apple and shipping expected by Sept 5th.
HP's 1.66GHz nx6310 - $825 and nx6320 - $950 go Core 2 Duo

Wow these 1.66GHz HP C2D Portables make the Apple 1.83GHz $1099 & 2GHz $1299 MacBooks look even more attractive and are obviously a much better deal.

or only $2064 for a 2.16GHz C2D Gateway M465-E looks good.

or only $3969 for a 2.33GHz C2D Dell XPS M1710

Let's see. $2500 for a Quad Mac Pro or $4,000 for a 2.33 GHz C2D Dell Mobile

There are still people waiting on Apple to announce Mac mini PowerPC models at the higher speeds. :D

Hey, hey, let us dream a little. I use to dream I could be "like Mike". It didn't help any, but it was a nice dream! As regards the MBP, you can send it back in 14 days if it's not Merom. Although I now do believe that there will be an annoucement tomorrow.

It does not seem that Apple would just ignore the C2D hype, even if it is planned in another month or so. Althought, if they made an annoucement tomorrow about a future release, it would hurt sales until it's released.

Price Increase?

With the new C2D in the iMacs do you think that the price will go up from the current models or will we see a continuation of "lower prices compared with similar PCs" that was popularized with the Mac Pro?

Can't wait to get my first mac ever.

An announcement tomorrow would be nice, even if they aren't available until after the 5th or later. Seeing all of these reviews for the Core 2 Duo laptops already available from Dell, HP, etc. is making me antsy, and making Apple seem a little slow to the starting line. But that's just my frustration talking, stemming from my overwhelming desire to have a shiny new merom MBP. :D

Come on Apple .... get in the groove ... the C2D race is on ...!

Gateway, Dell, Toshiba, WinBook, Alienware, Velocity Micro, and HP are in the race, heading for the first turn and moving fast.

Waiting that long would, at least in my eyes, would really put Apple behind the competition. I know Apple goes their own way and all that, but if you wanna compete today, you gotta keep up. That goes double with all the Dell and Windows mocking from WWDC in mind.

Release them tomorrow!! Make them available at september the 5th!! I´ll be at the NYC Apple Store at 1 A.M.!!!

patience is a virtue.

so can i see a show of hands for people who so desperately need C2D to do encoding on the move?

how about a show of hands for those who want to be on the cutting edge even if they don't benefit from it whatsoever?

thought so.

Great Find ShadowX. Beefing Up The Punchline for you.

"So in the end, we're giving this CPU an Editor's Choice Award. The latest Core 2 Duo mobile CPU is cooler, faster, and runs longer than the older Core Duo...It really looks like Intel has another hit CPU on their hands..."

well, to a degree... if you look closely, they're comparing a:

Final Release of Merom T7600 @ 2.33GHz
Eng. Sample of Merom T7400 @ 2.16GHz
Final Release of Yonah T2600 @ 2.16GHz

why not compare the chips with the same frequency? the only thing we can take from this benchmark is that the merom that runs at slightly faster frequency (2.33) than the yonah (2.16) manages to be 2.3% cooler. clock for clock that probably means the merom is 2.5% cooler than the yonah.

another 5 minutes of battery life! happy happy joy joy!
