i cant believe the freakin text field isn't editable. this makes using the Address book moot unless you have a '1' + area code for every contact. clippy wont work in the field either.

so now i have to manually import the whole address book and individually modify each contact.

ugh.

I actually haven't tried that... All my contacts from my Skype account just showed up without having to add them. Did you just start a new account?

Interesting bug. I can't duplicate it on mine... unless I've misunderstood the problem. It's late, so that's highly probable.

actually - now that you mention that. it didn't automatically bring in my Skype contacts. my list was blank. i have had an active Skype account for some time now.

grr.

What about creating an US account?

Recipe for Canadians

Reference:
Signing up for a free account in other country:
http://techwiredau.com/2008/09/grab-a-free-itunes-account-for-any-country/

Ingredients:
-Alternate e-mail address not signed up on iTunes yet
-iPhone/iPhone 3G/iPod Touch (w mic)/iPod Touch Gen2 (w mic)

Preparation:
Step 1: In iTunes, click "File->Transfer Purchases from iPhone"
Step 2: Click "Store->Sign Out"
Step 3: Follow techwired link above to sign up for free account in US or somewhere other than Canada.
Step 4: Download app as newly signed in account.
Step 5: Perform step 2 again and sign out.
Step 6: Sign in as your normal identity.
Step 7: Click on the iPhone device listed on the left column in iTunes, and select the "Applications" tab on the right. Click "Sync All" or "Sync Selected" and select "Skype".
Step 8: Perform a sync.
Step 9: Enjoy Skype on your iPhone :D

Notes: The transfer in step 1 is apparently necessary to retain all applications already on your phone.

it was crashing A LOT for me right after installing it - wouldn't even let me type in my username and password! This was apparently due to problems caused by Clippy. After uninstalling clippy it didn't crash at the login screen anymore.

It did, however, crash after about 30-40 seconds every time. This turned out to be a problem with mobilesubstrate - after updating this skype worked perfectly.

Just called my girlfriend for about 10 mins, voice quality is perfect and compared to nimbuzz and fringe there is no lag whatsoever.

Um, how am I supposed to use the app if I can't freaking buy Skype credits??? I'm with the many people who signed up for a new account through the iPhone and keep getting redirected to the Taiwanese PChome site. Day 2 and it's still not fixed, very disappointing. I shouldn't have to create another user account for this.

I don't understand why you have to? Surely you could buy credit on your mac/pc?

It's been two days since the app has been out, I think it still takes apple longer than 2 days to release updates for apps. So even if skype produced an update to fix the bug, it'll probably still be stuck in the approval process of the app store.

Sorry. Maybe you could try reinstalling it. Don't know if it'll help, but worth a try. Mine pulled the contacts on both the iPhone and wife's iPhone 3G that I had on Skype already.

I should have mentioned that I *did* try purchasing credit on two separate Windows XP PC's going to skype.com (on both Firefox and IE just in case). No dice, I'm always redirected to skype.pchome.tw. :( Seems the only fix is to download the software on a computer and create a new account.

See the following thread (after page 3 or so):
http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=256411

I see there's been a number of mentions on the iTunes reviews too. This is a pretty major bug to have...

I have two skype accounts. One for me, and one for my wife. Mine was registered ages ago but I've never really used it. My wife's was registered on the iPhone. Both re-direct me to the pchome.tw when I try to buy credit, whether on the phone, mac or windows using safari, firefox, internet explorer or mobile safari.

I know I'm late to the party, but I've been enjoying the app for a while now! Kudos Skype! Well done!

How lame of apple to approve the Ap without cellular connectivity. We are being charged a fee for data use but obviosly apple and more probably AT&T is limiting how much data can actually be used. AT&T has had several years to prepare their network for all of this increased activity.

I guess we can all guess that the sling player will be approved as wifi only. Really just pathetic.

its not about data usage... its about $$$... why would at&t want to allow you to make calls for free????

its all about the duckets

Toll Free Numbers...

Sorry if this is already mentioned earlier but another good thing about Skype is you can use it to call toll free numbers without having any credit (free calling toll free numbers).

This is very useful since ATT wireless minutes are used by Toll-Free numbers. I really don't understand what is free about these toll free numbers when you call those #s using your cell phone.

If someone has better understanding then please throw some light.

That, I did not know... I guess it doesn't matter if I have an unlimited subscription, eh?

Does that mean you could call Google's 411 for free?

I tried calling Google's 411 (800-GOOG-411), but it wouldn't work for me. Keeps saying call got cancelled. :(

Works for a couple other 800 numbers I've tried, though.

I just tried it and it worked for me! Just type 1 800 466 4411 and it should work right away. Without the 1 Skype said I needed credits to call the number, but then when retyped with the 1 it worked perfectly.

Strange, I tried both ways. Maybe I'll try again when I'm back on WiFi.
