Don't want to jump the gun, but it's possible you guys are getting shafted. I thought the natural conclusion to mobile comms was Skype + data plan and byebye big phone bills..

I hear what you're saying... But I don't feel shafted. It still works out to be much cheaper than my land line. I could only use my landline at home, so if I can only use Skype on WiFi at home, Starbucks, office, etc, I basically get way more portability than my landline for pennies on the dollar.

But it would be a VERY NICE bonus if I could use it everywhere on 3g. I can't blame ATT too much for trying to make a profit.

Crash Solved

The crash problem for users of jailbroken phones is solved. The guy who created Cydia has a protection mechanism called Mobile Substrate. This mobile substrate is designed to help secure and stabilize your iPhone when installing jailbroken apps. Within hours after Skype’s release a new version of Mobile Substrate was released into the Cydia repository that solved the Skype crash issue. So if you have a jailbroken iPhone go to Cydia and you will see an update available for Mobile Substrate. This should solve the issue. If the issue persists uninstall Skype and follow these directions….

For those of you who have crashes and you do not have your iPhone jailbroken you must understand that even though Apple does not allow background processes… when you open multiple apps it tends to gobble up the virtual memory. So do a soft reset on your iPhone by holding down the home screen button and the power button simultaneously.. within seconds you will see the Slide To Power Off screen… Do NOT slide to power off just keep holding then the screen will go back… keep holding… then when you see the Apple let go and let the iPhone start up normally. Then reinstall Skype and then try. This should solve most issues. Although I look forward to Skype offering an update that is not so touchy AND that allows us to use Skype on 3G network….

That is not entirely right. On German T-Mobile network it is possible to make calls over EDGE and 3G when using iPhone OS 3.0 beta as you can see on the following screenshots.

If it must be clarified to that degree...

For iPhone OS 2.2.1 in the US, Skype voice calls only work on WiFi. IMs work on WiFi, 3G, Edge.

Please tell me you agree now.

It would have been cool if you could see people with computer video cams when you called them. It doesn't seem like a big deal to implement in future software upgrades.

yeah, but a second beta was released today... Check if it still allow use of 3g.
I doubt it does.

I Just Wanna Let Everyone Know That Skype Lets You Make Calls Over 3g With Iphone 3.0 Beta 2

Apple Contact List Not Importing?

My full Apple application contact list is not showing up on the iPhone under Skype. Is there a way to get the Skype App. to import them?

Exactly, I don't know what all the excitement is about. This may make some phone calls cheaper than normal use, but this is hardly revolutionary, especially since you can't use it over 3G (but I could never see AT&T allowing people to bypass them over their very own network).

This wouldn't apply, or be understood by most Americans, but the rest of the world likes to to travel to countries other than their own. Call rates are much higher out of your home country.

For example, I was in Mexico this last weekend. The hotel call rate was US$6 a minute to the UK. I used Skype over the hotel WiFi and paid something like 1p a minute. I was on the call for about an hour, so saved myself about US$360.

Now do you understand?

For those folks that are jailbroken, Saurik has issued an update to MobileSubstrate that fixes all issues with Skype.
