Official "Waiting for Santa Rosa" thread.

I wonder if it would be a smart idea to buy those 2x2gb 667mhz memory sticks in the sale mentioned in a recent thread now.

Or do you think I'd be fine waiting til after santa rosa laptops are announced? I've never seen a deal that great though..

That was kind of confusing.

Then only major difference between mb and mbp would be screen resolution, which would not justify the price difference...

Not really. A high end Mac-Book with a 8400 BTO added in would probably be nearly as expensive as the base MBP. With the MBP having a better CPU, GPU, HDD, screen and all the extras.

what are the chances that they will release a 13 inch MBP at WWDC? i feel like the 15 is way too big, but really dont want to have to go with the MB

I seriously doubt it, people who buy the MBP are looking for performance for music/video editing and things like photoshop. Doing any of those tasks on a 13" laptop wouldn't make much sense, especially because you might have to cripple the system to get it to that size. I just don't see that as a possibility.

the powerbook 12 inch was basically an ibook in a smaller powerbook casing, and with a faster graphics card.... but i still loved the powerbook 12 inch :) It was my preferred choice. It would be nice if apple would do a 13.3 macbook pro w/o the big border around the screen the macbook has.... but i really really doubt that would happen.

Why?

Like i said, it would just be a macbook in drag most likely, since there wasn't enough to differentiate the powerbook 12 from the ibook 12, apple dropped it when they went intel. Plus "wide screen" is the new buzzword for computer marketing. A 12 inch wide screen would be tiny (since the 12 inch is measured diagonally).

I was right! TurboCache is cheating!

The TDP of the Mobility X1600 is supposed to be about 17W. Pretty hard to beat, eh? I think you were also looking at the TDP of the Desktop version of the HD2600, which would have a TDP of more like 90W. Here's to hoping the Mibility version has a TDP more like 20W. The link you sent is clearly not a mobile GPU, with the whole massive cooler and all. ; )

That power consumption figure is for the entire system, not just the GPU.
Whoops. You and Erasmus are quite right about the power consumption figures for the X1600 that I linked. I couldn't find the power consumption on ATi's spec sheets, so I thought it best to hastily look up a review.

I linked the HD2600 benchmarks for the sake of seeing the numbers that the GPU was capable of churning out. That's always the selling point for me :)

Actually I think a size that is somewhere between the current 15" MBP and the 13.3" MB would be perfect.

14.1"?

hey hey,

i needed to get a replacement for my ill fated pb, which i spilled soup on last week. i was going to get a mbp, but when exactly is santa rosa expected to ship? trying to decide if i can wait, as long as its soon

but when exactly is santa rosa expected to ship? trying to decide if i can wait, as long as its soon

Santa Rosa ships from Intel to manufactureres sort of now/very soon I think.
When Apple includes it is anyone's guess but the current favourite is at the WWDC on June 11th.

That would make sense as its a 'Pro' laptop, the MBP is past its average update time, and everyone else is already announcing SR equipped lappies

Hope that helps! :)

Doesn't Intel usually ship out the platform before the "official release date" so there are some models ready to ship on that date? Generally that has been Dell, Gateway, HP but not Apple. I'm assuming there will be a slight delay in Apple's release - but would they hold out to WWDC for a "simple" chipset update? I too am holding out for a MacBook with SR, primarily for the graphics update.

They are waiting on the mbp so they can put santa rosa in a phone.

It's going to kick ass.

It looks to me like Apple likes to do things in their own time, looking at the C2D laptop times, Apple was much later than everyone else.
I doubt its because they didn't get the chips, more so that the releases would fit in with their schedule, not so that they get a 'simple chipset update', though I'm not quite sure what you're referrring to there.

And maybe they want to be fashionably late.;)

I think tomorrow may be the day we see Santa Rosa in a MBP.
-It fits Apple's time table, it has to be out before WWDC.
-It fits the Intel's shipping schedule.
-It fits other manufacturer's shipping schedule.
-There are rumors of a 6G iPod tomorrow. That won't happen, but maybe Apple is releasing something tomorrow and the rumor was slightly wrong. Its happened before.

Why does it have to be out before the WWDC, Apple style would probably be to release it at WWDC.

Some people think that apple wouldn't release a macbook pro during WWDC so they can just focus on hyping up the iPhone.

I dunno if I believe that. I think they would want to have a big WWDC and be like "iPhone, MacBook Pro's, MacBook's, Oh... and they have the new LED backlight as we promised! OMFG!"

With these rumor posts... it seems that there are extremes (won't be released till october with Leopard, they'll be here tomorrow! Or... they'll have new black anodized depleted uranium cases!), and the truth is somewhere in the middle.

talking about a phone

i don't know if you've ever experienced a wwdc before, or any apple event for that matter....but they release whatever they choose on the first day, first couple of hours only. just because the event is a few days doesn't mean they only talk about the phone for a few days. it's a matter of what takes up the hour and a half or so of the keynote, most likely exclusively one piece of hardward(the iPhone), and one-three pieces of software(Leopard, iWork iLife Leopard)

I don't believe that much either. WWDC is a few days right? How long can you talk about a stupid phone?

Well keep in mind that Apple has purposely been digressing from debuting big hardware updates at events. The Macbook and all other revision updates for the MBP have been on Tuesdays, not big events.

hi there

By the way, I've been wanting to ask this for a long time, but I didn't want to start a thread just for this question -I'm shy :p .

Does Apple always release its new products on tuesdays? If so, Why?

:)

The argument is definitely compelling, and I'm on the ledge whether to believe that Santa Rosa would come out before or on WWDC. I'm almost more inclined to believe that it wouldn't, just because the iPhone is going to be more than huge, and they have to cram Leopard in there with all these "hidden" features, along with the iLife updates. I mean, that's a lot of crap to fit into the small session, especially since they might touch on being more environmentally friendly as well.

Maybe I'm just being hopeful because I'm tired of waiting for an update, but nevertheless, I'm hoping it comes out on one of these Tuesdays before WWDC.

Oh, and another MBP size is highly unlikely, IMO. Same with anodized aluminum cases. We're talking about a higher end serious laptop, not some kiddie "PRODUCT(RED) MACBOOK PRO!!!" Also, I wouldn't count on LED screens for a little while longer. Just seems too soon for it.

Does Apple always release it's new products on tuesdays? If so, Why?

For as long as I have been following Apple, they have released smaller things like processor bumps and price drops on Tuesdays. I have no idea why.

We think it's because after work concludes the prior week and weekend, Monday gives Apple a day to make sure all their ducks are in a row for debut.

My very, very, very optimistic release date for the new Macbook Pro is the 15th of May. It's a tuesday, and AMD lifts NDAs on and releases their new line of graphics cards. Santa Rosa is to be released tomorrow, I believe, which is a Wednesday.

My more conservative guesses still do not stretch past WWDC.

Hurry Up Apple! :D

My Vista RC2 runs out at the end of May, so I hope you're right!

WWDC is a developer event, so they're not really gonna want to hear about the new 'consumer' iPhone. Apple already said development isn't going to be completely open for the phone, so why would they flaunt it?

Wasn't June 26th a guessd realease date for the iPhone? I reckon we'll get a big iPhone bash towards the end of June, its not really appropriate for a WWDC imo.

As for saying that they couldn't do new hardware because of the iPhone, the reason people got taken off Leopard was for software.

The WWDC is for professionals, professionals want the next great computer, we had Mac Pro updates recently, it just makes sense to have new MBPs.
