Im in almost the exact same boat as you...i think we just have to wait it out, see what comes out and make a decision then...and in the meantime, pray for SR and LED in the MB!! (or a 13" MBP...which is super unlikely)
Thanks. It's good to know their are others out there in the same situation. Imagine the frustration of waiting (insert number) months for this and not getting it.
My next question is if i do video editing on a macbook, what is the difference between that and a macbook pro, which has it's own graphics card? Does the graphics card make that much of a difference in video editing. (I'm thinking of using iMovie, probably not a professional program, at least not yet.)
theres really very little difference as far as that goes especially if ur just using imovie. You will be limited when you get to more advanced programs like final cut etc.

I too am waiting for Santa Rosa in a MB, I can't wait to ditch the family comp and get my own machine for college. does anyone know if the new graphics unit in SR will be able to drive an external display? if so, that would make SR even more exciting for me. I want a MB for its portability, but even being able to drive a small external display would be great for working in the dorm.
PS- does anybody else think that whenever they release SR in their notebooks,
will start their usual back to school sale (free ipod with purchase of notebook usually)? I think it'd be a perfect time to do so, but being a noob, my opinion might be a bit misguided

The Current Macbooks can do that, and operate in 'Clamshell Mode' with the Macbook screen off and only running the external.
That is a feature that already exists, so its not gonna go anywhere!
The Macbook is a consumer notebook, so methinks it would get the SR and all its upgrades around your 'back to school' time, makes sense to me, and that's what they usually do, can't see why it would change!

All notebooks can plug into external displays.
I was not aware of a back to school sale, and could use the free ipod (1g nano is pretty small). What kind of education discount does apple usually give for college? My friend said $300 bucks but I can't find anywhere that says that...
Go to the online Apple Store and click on the Education Discounts link in the lower-right.
The discount varies by computer. Last year they did the free iPod thing and I just missed it.
It's not exactly 300 dollars, the discounts are by percent on what you buy, and for some things you don't get any discount. In this case, buying a MBP would save you about $300.
I would hope they would put the back to school thing on at the same time, but I'm not counting on it.

oh, I was unaware. I thought I'd read somewhere that the current GPU couldn't power the cinema displays... this is a pleasant surprise though! So it's looking like SR in the MB/P will probably be around WWDC then (or so the majority is saying). though I wouldn't mind it sooner!
Though I'll probably go with an MBP if the MB doesn't get SR around WWDC.BTW- thx for the help grandmaster, but I believe the subtitle on my name would beg to differ
The Latitude D#30 Series laptops appear to be up today. The graphical options appear to be stuck with the GMA X3100 even though they mention other options.
The Santa Rosa MB will be a great machine. The major disadvantage of the MB right now is the on-board graphics, and under SR that's one area that improves significantly. For the above poster and many other people, a SR MB + a cheap 19" external display and keyboard will be a fantastic and very affordable setup that gives you power, portability, and desktop ergonomics. I agree that Apple will likely update the MBP first, like within two weeks, and then the MB about a month or two later. Maybe the MBP gets to 2.4ghz/2.2ghz and the MB is just a little slower at 2ghz.

This is terrible because if they don't come out on Tuesday, I don't know what I'm going to do.
IMO this is the best case scenario realistically, doesn't make the wait any easier though...
quick suggestion though- since the MB will be the machine that will benefit from SR the most (as far as I gather), would it maybe make sense for it to be updated first in some sort of upside down turn of events?
I'm sure there are quite a few people not just wanting this update, but needing it. College is out for summer, my dell is on the verge of death. The sooner the switch the better and this Tuesday would make my summer.

Then why would apple need 100,000 LED displays at 15.4 inches ?
A macbook with better graphics solution might make me change my mind....depends how the new MBP are I guess.
Agreed. I need a 'book not just for college this fall, but for a lot of audio production this summer... I've come to the conclusion that for what I need my laptop to do, thse SR updates (another G of ram, robson to take strain and time off of hard drive read/writes allowing me to record 14 channels of audio WITHOUT sending some or all to an external FW drive, etc etc) make the difference between a laptop that can do what I need... and one that can do what I need comfortably.
C'mon, Apple. I'll be first in line for a beastly SR MBP, I promise. I'll forgive you for delaying 10.5 if you ship SR MBPs Tuesday.

exactly what i was trying to say in an earlier post. They wouldn't order 100,000 screens to have sold in laptops in october
just wouldn't make sense. Nor would they make that many prototypes. And that article never said that the order was the only one to come.I'm seriously looking at MBPs at WWDC (hopefully sooner... but doubt it) because any later wouldn't make sense (to me at least). Its a developers conference and developers need to know the hardware of the computers they are developing for. Also developers are more-so "Pro" users than "consumer" users.
