While I do understand that folks waiting for a MBP or MB with the new processors are anxious, and I can't half blame them, it's just really getting tiring reading this stuff. And yeah, I know I don't have to read it, but the place is just littered with MBP and MB thread titles.

Remember when we had no idea what the roadmap was? I almost like it better. Now, with Intel, we know exactly when chips are released and people have been literally wetting their pants until it goes into an Apple product.

1. There are hardly an 64-bit apps that most people, even professionals use. The likelyhood of 64-bit apps being widespread during the life of your notebook is s-l-i-m, slim. I can however understand someone waiting for one if they have a specific 64-bit app to use.

2. We're not talking a massive speed bump here, and I'd say hardly noticeable for most people, even professionals. Maybe 20% at most. What's thi big deal? I mean Ars Technica or Gizmodo aren't jumping up[ and down over these chips as they are in PCs.

3. While I have no idea, I really don't see a major redesign coming. I'm sure there are some nice things and minor feature tweaks coming, but I just don't feel like we'll see these "extreme" form factor changes until January - just makes more sense. I dould be wrong, but oh well.

4. If you need a computer today to make a living, do schoolwork or, something critical, get it. I didn't do a bunch of rumour site wandering and running around when I bougt my last two machines - I needed them to do work. If you're not in that camp, fine, but good gracious, I've never seen this board so lathered up over a small chip enhancement.

The end. :D

I just don't get how you keep such a great reputation (9.1). Mind you I'd only feel safe when you've reached a reputation rating of ?+1. This last crock certainly can't help.

<wondering if it's GD2 or just an in joke /> I have some concern but font consistency seems good, avatar to avatar.

I agree wholeheartedly, but as you know, the Core Duo has been out since January. If Apple were to offer the 2.33 GHz Yonah, or lower the prices of the 2.16 GHz models, I would have purchased mine long ago. I don't think that's asking too much.

I can't believe I'm with the naysayers, but...

The MBP is way overpriced right now.

Perhaps I'm being stingy, but I want my $2799 to go as far as it possibly can!

It's a delicate balance, being an educated consumer without foaming at the mouth. :p

i agree with iGary. i needed a computer so i bought one. i suggest others do the same. it is extremely fast... faster than any other computer i've used. Merom is nice (faster, bettery battery life (supposedly), and 64-bit) but iGary's points outweight those factors.

Why I think they're coming out tomorrow

1. It seems alot of people have allegedly heard Apple sales reps telling them stocks are low and to buy this week when they recieve the new product.

2. I remember reading somewhere that Apple was done with the MBPs development and were waiting for the marketing team to pull the trigger. It doesn't make sense to wait any longer, all other PC manufacturers have notebooks with C2D already in them. Why not this Tuesday, just in time for Photokina?

3. I haven't checked the price of many mac retailers before tonight, but most of them have rebates up to $200...it seems an update will be coming soon...

4. Apple didn't add Apeture to their front page yet...in fact they haven't changed a thing...its not big enough to put by itself as a main picture, but as one of the smaller ones. Wouldn't it look so nice with a big new Merom MBP on the front page?

Just my thoughts, hope its coming tomorrow...Apples really testing my patience, but I really can't buy this close to an update...I would wait for probably one more week after this before I decide what to do...

Would Merom MBP's really be released with a ton of fanfare and front page placement (meaning they would be the main image)?

You know, Apple's been testing Merom in MBPs since say...June? We all thought they would be released at WWDC well over a month ago. Perhaps something more substantial is in store, after all, we are all surprised they aren't out yet.

It's really not just all that. Remember when the first MBP's came out, with all the thermal paste fiasco and heat issues and everybody claiming "I'll never get a Rev. A!"?

Well, here we are. I'm not looking at minor 20% speed bump, I'm looking at something that can handle around 8-9 times more instances of Logic's Sculpture reverb plugin (over my old G4). I sold my Powerbook in anticipation for the Rev. B MBP's, and now I have $800-900 worth of software just sitting around idle.

I want to read reviews seeing that they solved the burning laptop (my friend's MBP gets super hot), and maybe added some minor improvements to justify a purchase over a MacBook. I'm not going to buy a MBP right when it comes out, I'm going to wait 1-2 weeks for everybody else to get one and report to me that it sucks or that it's great.

I know I'm partly to blame, but on the same note, I'm anxious and impatient for Rev. B MBP so I can finally buy an Intel Mac. If I knew back in May that the next MBP wouldn't be released until November (just a guess) then I'd have purchased a Mac Mini long ago~

It's sad

I've been waiting for an update since July and thought I could make due with waiting a few weeks into college to get a MBP.

I'm in college, its been more then a month.

I hate Mac Os 9.

More then 35% of the sites I try to view with even the most recent web browser (Mozilla) fail or fantastically are crippled in site capabilities. After going (arg) back and retesting the site if it workes in IE (ugh) 30% of the sites still can't load.

I'm dying. I have no iTunes which means no updating my iPod. (I can charge it, but songs are getting old fast) I mean even AIM is becoming a problem, the version I use loads, but every time a 'new IM' (from a friend or person on buddy list) is sent to me my computer locks up for a good 9 seconds and then goes back to its slow moving self.

Apple -- Please - your killing me.

wow seriously now, you people* are a sad, sad bunch. the mbp and mb lineup just came out earlier this year and all anyone can do is gripe about their 8 month old laptop.

*you people being those who expect apple to update at every event

Yeah, I mentioned that possibility before. (I think it was this thread - there are so many Merom ones I forget which ones I've posted in and which ones I haven't.)

MrMacMan, you need to buy a new computer regardless of some new chip that won't exactly benefit you in amazing, astounding ways. You're kind of killing yourself, Apple isn't telling you to wait for this new chip that isn't even that effing spectacular like everyone is making it out to be.

That's exactly it though slabbius. Apple is using the Intel processor, no longer should Apple sit on their hands with their cpu's, like they did with the PPC stuff. Intel has a road map, and the C2D cpu's are already out and in the machines of their competition. Griping about an 8 month old laptop is one thing, but if the newest technology is there, why not use it, especially if you're charging a premium for your units?

Well, I am perfectly happy with my Powerbook, but if Apple ever redesigns the case so that you can easily change the hard drive like they have done with the MacBook, then I will get a MacBook Pro. Otherwise, i will just wait until this dies. I still have a year plus a week or so of AppleCare left...:D

1) Mighty Mouse
2) No Merom MBP or MB

As for the Mighty Mouse do I need to say more ?

Don't you think that it might be costly to switch with such frequency? Not to mention the R&D needed to implement new boards to support the new chips, cooling issues, etc... I really don't care about an 10-15% performance gain, what will that seriously do? Knock 5-7 seconds off your photoshop speed test? That isn't impressive enough for me to want an upgrade no matter how state of the art it is. Show me 20-30 seconds off my speed test. That's just small potatoes to me, and probably small potatoes to Apple. It would be more appealing and also creates a higher demand if upgrades are more like 30-50% performance increases.

slabbius, you can't call us a sad bunch of people because we expect apple to update their hardware to MATCH (not exceed) the competion. Many of us are forking over at leask 2k for a piece of hardware that is outdated as soon as we get it.
It is not about the fact that Merom has slightly better performance than Yonah. It is mostly psychological. If I am going to throw down nearly 3k for a computer, i want to know i am getting a top of the line, most current piece of hardware.
I could understand if Apple were a company that charges around 1k for a laptop. They're not. Apple is asking for us to pay a premium for what? A machine that is inferior to the competition?
I am a switcher and am dying to switch to the Mac bandwagon but I will not make the switch to an outdated laptop. The current may be great and yada yada yada but it would make me feel and a lot of other people feel better about our purchases if Apple could simply MATCH the competition. If i have to come to the computer lab everyday and do my work, so be it, because i cannot justify to myself paying a premium for a Core duo. Peace

Some really intelligent points in this thread--rare for threads of this type. I have to agree with the "Intel therefore update more" idea. PPC gave Apple a sort of unique quality, and in a sense, they could "get away" with releasing updates at longer intervals, due in part to IBM's processor roadmap.

But now we're in the world of Intel. All us PC users know that Intel and AMD crank out new processors and drop prices at a near breakneck speed. Other manufacturers seem to cope fairly well with this, and I'm assuming there is a streamlined process in terms of updating processors.. Dell seems to do this very fast. I wonder if they are more efficient in this sense due to.. well.. more practice?

Either way, MB and MBP need either updates or price drops to keep a significant edge over the competition. That said, there's always Apple esthetics which will justify the price tag to some degree (we can all admit that). I'll pay a little bit more for a notebook which I don't think is ugly to look at. Of course; since Apple does not drop prices on notebooks (typically), that leaves the need for an update to ensure an edge. That said, it doesn't seem like many manufacturers are necessarily "pushing" C2D as a selling point; and as long as they don't, the average consumer won't know the difference when planning to buy a notebook... hence why Apple isn't in too much of a rush.

Anyways, It looks like I stirred up a hornets nest here on MR.
Bleh, If I didn't someone else would've.

Blissfully ignorant set us up to being fleeced.

Somebody had to start this thread...

I just hope the C2D MBP's are a little cooler. A 17" MBP burned me the other day at a Compusa. Seriously. Left a mark.
