I wrote this in another thread but I just feel like this is a really desperate attempt for AT&T to get rid of unlimited data users. Could there be a reason? Perhaps when the next version of LTE is out (Edge>3G>4G>LTE), that they won't be allowed to throttle unlimited users?

You have the FCC Chairman who is basically the top dog in the FCC breathing down carriers necks about the throttling.
Lol, I'm actually thinking the same thing. :p

That's why I ain't giving up my 4 unlimited data lines.

Just a question... I've had unlimited data since the last day it was offered through AT&T. Is there any legal way they could just remove it or not offer phone upgrades without changing it?

$140? Thats alot of money.
thanks god for wifi.

I'm always at home or at work, wifi both places :p
3gb for $45 and unlimited everything else is better for me.

I so don't miss my contracts.

Isn't that what Verizon does now, force you to pick a new (non-unlimited) plan if you want to use a subsidized upgrade? If they can get away with it I'm guessing AT&T could too unless there's something in the AT&T contract that explicitly prohibits this.

Right now that doesn't seem like their plan (they're just discounting the share plans to draw people in), but if the FCC ever ends throttling I would expect they'd start to actively push people off unlimited whenever they can.

Yes. The subsidized phones are just incentives to get you to sign a contract. There's nothing on your contract that says AT&T is required to offer you subsidized devices. They're required to give you the services indicated per the terms of your wireless service agreement. However, AT&T is allowed to change your plan. They're just required to notify you about the change I think 30-60 days in advance. Also, if you decide you don't like the changes, you can leave AT&T even if you're still on contract without paying ETF.

Depends what the % is those on unlimited. I know with our 4 unlimited lines we are a minoity according to the AT&T reps at the stores in my area. It's like unheard of.

We are paying verizon about $300 a month for 8gb and 4 lines. Is this something I should consider?

That's why we should be glad that there is TMo and Sprint you can use for leverage.

Okay, guys.. I hope one of you can help me crunch some numbers as well, because I'm seeing pros and cons to this offer. Luckily, we have time to decide what is best. But I would love some help here.

My current plan:

2 Smartphones (iPhone 4S for both)
$70.00 - FamilyTalk 700 with Rollover
$30.00 - Unlimited texts with mobile to any mobile calling
$60.00 - Unlimited Data ($30 * 2)
$7.00 - Insurance on 2nd iPhone

Subtotal: $167.

Total for us per month, after taxes and 12% FAN applied, is roughly $159 - 160.

The 30GB offer looks good for us, as we would start to get throttled at 3GB. Would it be easier for us to move to the 30GB level with BYO, then upgrade the phones (if possible)? or would it be easier for us to go with NEXT altogether, or keep on the 2-year contract?

My wife is wanting the 6+, while I'm wanting the 6. Let's go full out with 128GB each.

Any thoughts?

BL.

Go with AT&T Next

$100 - unlimited voice/txt 10gb data
$40-25 = $15 - your primary line
$40-25 = $15 - your wife's line
$130 total

Subtract the 12% fan discount from the $100 if you want to calculate it $88+$15+$15=$118

$130 for 30gb would even put you out front than your current plan.

You are saving $50 a month for brining your own phone through the Next program which is a little over 1 monthly iphone payment instead of paying for 2 year contract price

I would go with Next

Ok att you win. Take my unlimited plan this is a better deal.

I called AT&T today and decided to give up my 2 unlimited lines starting on my next billing cycle, Oct 11. Currently I was paying for 700 minutes, Unlimited Text, and $30 for each unlimited line. I was averaging around $160 - 170 monthly bill.

Keeping my 2 year contract and discount my new bill will be around $165 (+/-) $5 for two lines with unlimited talk, text, international text, and 30gb share. I also get the ability to use HotSpot.

As far as devices go. I just got an iPhone 6 which is a $40 line charge and my other iPhone line is only $15 with 1 year left on contract. In a year the $40 charge will drop down to $15 resulting in a lower bill. I asked CS and a supervisor to confirm this before I decided to go with this plan. Next month I will also bring over my fiancé's AT&T line to my account. Since she already has a iPhone 5s and it just hit one year into her 2 year contract, it will only cost me $15 for that line. She will share the rest on my plan.

I hated giving up my Unlimited Data but this new plan works out for me price wise. Also I won't be throttled down at 5gb. I know next time I upgrade one of my lines is a year I will get nailed with $40. I'll look at the Next Program then. For now if I can keep 3 lines under $200 I'm happy.

Old Plan: Line 1
$60.00 FamilyTalk Nation 700 with Rollover
$30.00 Family Messaging Unlimited with Mobile to Any Mobile Calling
$30.00 Data Unlimited for iPhone on 4G LTE with VVM

Old Plan: Line 2
$9.99 FamilyTalk Nation 700 with Rollover
$30.00 Data Unlimited for iPhone on 4G LTE with VVM

So your bills are about even now, but what happens when you want to upgrade to new phones. You can't sign another 2 year deal or else you'll lose your extra data under their double data promotion. So, you'll have to pay full price for the phones or use Next. That is why I am keeping my unlimited data plans...not because of the data, but because it would cost too much everytime I wanted a new phone.

This part, I know, but the problem is in looking at the total cost, it would be hard to justify the cost of being throttled at 5GB on LTE, versus nothing at 30GB for $30 - $35 cheaper.

Keep in mind that we've been off contract for over a year, and are looking at getting the 6 and 6+. We just don't know if it would be cheaper to go with NEXT for getting the phones, or staying on the 2-year contract for getting the phones.

Calculate both scenarios over a two year period.

[Your current plan (continued) x 24] + the price of subsidized phone(s) + Upgrade fee(s)
[Your new NEXT plan* x 24] + the actual price of the phone(s)

*Keep in mind that you will not be including the installment costs into the NEXT calculation.

Some of what you said is not true. I will not have to pay full price for a new iPhone under my 2 year contract. Yes my $15 discount will go up to $40 when I upgrade next year if I select a 2 year contract but if I select Next or pay full price for my phone than it remains $15. I will also not loose my double data promotion. It is mine from this point forward regardless of how many times I upgrade my devices.

My question was what happens when your 2 yr contracts end? If you decide to buy a new phone, you have to use the Next program, according to the terms of the double data deal:

From ATT site: Upgrade: If upgrade to a new phone discount is only available via AT&T NextSM or if you bring your own phone or pay full price. If you upgrade to a new 2-year agreement, the access charge discount is lost.

That means you have to pay full price for the phones. This was the deciding factor in me not giving up my unlimited data plan.

The discounted price I will be loosing is the $15 dollars on the device to my line on a new 2 year contract. That will go up to $40 as I stated. I do not loose my discount data plan. If I want to keep the $15 then I have to go to next, pay full price or bring my own device. The access charge is the $15 or $40, depending on what you choose. I will most likely move over to Next when my primary line is up in September 2015. This way I still keep my $15 discount. Again, nothing effects your data share promotion. The discount is all about equipment. So no you are not paying full price for the phone. You can keep your $199, $299, $399 prices during your next upgrade. Just remember you will go from $15 line charge to $40 line charge. I hope I made that clear.

Everyone's case is different, but in my case NEXT is going to save me some good money.

Previous plan:
Family Talk 1400 -- 1400 monthly minutes with rollover, unlimited text, unlimited mesasges, unlimited data on two lines.

Line 1:
Family Take 1400 - $80
Family messaging unlimted: $30
Unlimted Data: $30

Line 2: $10 (9.99, rounding up to make the math clean)
Unlimited data: $30

*** OLD PLAN TOTAL Line 1/2: $180/month.

We use a ton of minutes (can't remember the last time I used land line), and average about 3.5-4 gigs of data a month. Our peak data usage over the last 12 months was 6.9gig. Lowest just under 3.

My son is now old enough for a phone, so I got him a 5s as we switched the to the new plan.

Current plan: 10GB Mobile Share
$100 base rate for plan
$15 x 3 for three lines = $45
$22/month

TOTAL $167/month.

I save $13 a month (not a ton) BUT I got a new phone out of it. Had we not added the additional line, the total would have been $130/month ($100 base + $15 x 2lines). That is a savings of $600 a year.

We also plan to add two new phones (6/6s) on the Next plan. The month payment on those will be about $33/44 each... but we will also sell two old 5s on eBay for a combined $650ish.

So for our situation - Next was a positive. We would have to nearly double our data usage to get to our limit, and for $30 more/month I can switch to 30g a month, which I cannot imagine hitting.
