So here we are how many months later and apple still has not put out a fix for the proximity sensor which every iphone4 owner whom i've talked to has experienced?

You obviously haven't met Steve Jobs...

That's exactly how mine functions. I finally got an answer back from Apple and since they escalated my problems to higher authority and I will be able to return my iPhone 4 to a Apple store for a full refund even though I'm out of my 30 days. I bought the iPhone 4 the day it was released.

If I were you I would use it for the first 28-29 days and if they don't come out with a fix then I would DEFINITELY return it the phone [most of the time] can be freaking pain in the a$$ because of this and has aggravated to no ends.

I will miss the iPhone 4's beauty and will get another one once the problems are addressed but don't listen to promises on getting it fix. If they don't fix it within the next 28-29 days RETURN IT, it's not worth the headaches.

Yes, I will be returning if if the 4.1 fix doesn't fix it (that's IF it comes out in the next 28 days). There are some things I can live with, this is not one of them.

I don't have a thought on whether or not it's hardware/software issue. I don't care either way...I just need my phone to work. I've had every iPhone since the beginning and though this one is the more gorgeous phone I've ever seen, it's certainly been the biggest disaster of them all. Too bad.

It's gonna be hard going back to the 3GS after seeing the screen on this one though. :p

After 4 previous iPhone4 replacements for severe proximity sensor problems, defective camera, 3G Data problems, etc., I finally got a replacement iPhone with no problems.

I was working with a Tier 2 Support person who had one mailed to me. This one is not a 5K refurb, but a new week 24 iPhone4.

So far, so good, I have used it for 3 days, and everything is perfect. My faith in Apple has been restored and hanging in there paid off.

Still waiting for a fix, luckily I still use my 2g iPhone to make the majority of my calls despite the sound quality being terrible.

I would assume Old Man Jobs will say something about this update on Sept. 1 during there special event.

Lets all cross our fingers that the fix works, if not I will try as many replacements as it takes till they get me one that works!

Conventional wisdom says your proximity issue will return. Please let us know when it does. :)

I still wonder why some iPhones have the issue and some don't.

Any proximity sensor issues I had with the other (4 replacement) iPhones didn't happen gradually - the iPhone either did it or didn't. I have talked about 60 minutes/20 calls with this new iPhone with no issue yet.

I'm not disagreeing with conventional wisdom, I'm just reporting my experience.

I have had my phone for 3 weeks. It never happened in the first 2 weeks then on one day it happened twice to me. A week later and no repetition. I know it is a problem as it never happened to me once with my 3G. I use my phone heavily, easily 30 or so calls a day.

Your experience is important. If you're still golden after three weeks after 4.1 is out and we're still complaining, the rest of us will have cause to start going medieval on Apple for replacements.

Any advice on how to get to Tier 2 easily?

I posted this on another thread but I think it may be a clue to the answer of why some do and some don't:

I don't know anything for sure. I do have some limited insight granted through the iPhone developer program of which I am a paid member.

I've worked with Apple engineering on several iOS issues in the past and understand a little bit about the process. I currently have an open defect on the prox sensor issue and have had a few exchanges (through the bug reporter) with engineering staff.

My personal test phones don't have the problem. Nor do any I've been able to lay hands on. However, I very recently found one that the owner thought did here at my office that does so opened the defect.

The reason I think it's a software issue - the path of exploration seems to be along the lines that iOS 4.0 (and 4.0.1/2) can get into a state where it believes you are on speaker (or headset) when you are not. The normal behavior for this condition is to disable the prox sensor. What's triggering this? Who knows but I imagine they'll sort it out and include a fix in 4.1.

I kicked the iPhone habit! Yes, for hours on the land line I begged for a microcell because I really, really needed one. None to be had for free, but maybe, maybe if I drive to the store and talk to xxxxx in person......

On the way, I stop at the Apple store and play with all the shiny toys. The Leica look and the retina display beckon to me. I envision myself with one...

But, I put it down and left. I went over to the AT&T store, waited awhile in a long line and left.

How low I had gotten. Some people have to hit the bottom in order to bounce up and back.

I went home and ordered a Verizon pay for use Samsung.

I am hooked up, but no longer hooked. My contract is over and is not being renewed. I am renewed instead.

Oh, maybe Verizon gets the iPhone and it can be used here, or maybe AT&T actually builds a tower, and the iPhone may call to me (if I hold it right). But, really, I can take it or leave it now.

I hope 4.1 fixes the issues people are having. I have read that 4.1 also fixes the bluetooth problems as well. In my mind, Apple knows there are problems, and if they cared about there customers as much they claim, they would release a 4.0.x release to fix the issues people are having. Mid to late September is unacceptable. The iPod event is not going to be any less exciting and newsworthy if they released the proximity sensor and bluetooth fixes now.

I have patiently waited for a fix that never seems to come and have restored my phone several times and reset network settings for temporary relief, but I have had enough. I spoke to Apple support today and set up an appointment with a Genius for Wednesday. The Apple rep was willing to do an advanced replacement, but I knew I would be near the Apple store. Some folks are reporting getting an iPhone free of issues. Not even sure if it is worth exchanging, but at this point, it's worth it to me to try.

They exchanged the phone for a brand new week 30. As of right now, I have zero issues. I hope this doesn't change, but all incoming calls on bluetooth have been fine and no proximity sensor issues when holding the phone while talking. I guess we'll see how it goes. If it is software, I'm sure the problems will return.

Any advice on how to get to Tier 2 easily?

Here's what I did. I called AppleCare to say that I was more than frustrated about the PS problem. After several minutes of questions, he offered to mail me a replacement or set up a Genius Bar appointment for a replacement. I accepted.

Then, I said that when Steve Jobs did his speech about the iP4 problems, he said that they weren't getting a lot of calls about the problems relative to all the media attention. I said that I wanted to make my complaint FORMAL. I wanted my dissatisfaction heard.

I was VERY polite. No threats. No ranting. Just the facts - with an emphasis on the two most important calls (from the physician after my mother's stroke) that were dropped due to the PS problem.

The AppleCare guy put me on hold and shortly after, another guy came on. I told him the same information. I told him that I wanted to be sure that the failure of my iPhone to perform as designed was DOCUMENTED.

The second guy turns out to be the Tier 2 Support. He took ownership of my problem. He gave me his direct line extension. He told me the days he worked and what to do if I needed to get in touch on his day off. When I left a message for him, he got back to me within the hour.

I don't know others' experiences with Tier 2. Mine was polite, pleasant, and most importantly, effective.

Still no PS problems on this replacement.
