If it was a simple code fix, why don't we have it yet?

well am guessing its not a 'simple' code fix, plus the fix is in 4.1 which is in beta at the moment, due for release at some point soon, current guesstimates are mid to late september with the iPod event thats meant to be happening

I've been getting this problem more & more lately not to happy. Last night I had to call my friend bk 3 times due to call failed & once where I muted the call and didn't realise lol. So I was on the phone and noticed my iPhone screen kept turning off and on again depending how close I held it to my ear.i could see it quite clearly turning off and off as It was 3am and the lights were off. I've also had it drop calls a few times never had this with my 3GS hopefully there's a fix asap.

have you tried the 'reset network settings' trick? that seems to have sorted mine out. as i said, 4.1 seems to have a fix, as many people testing the beta have stated. general assumption is it should be out soon.

I hope 4.1 fixes the issues people are having. I have read that 4.1 also fixes the bluetooth problems as well. In my mind, Apple knows there are problems, and if they cared about there customers as much they claim, they would release a 4.0.x release to fix the issues people are having. Mid to late September is unacceptable. The iPod event is not going to be any less exciting and newsworthy if they released the proximity sensor and bluetooth fixes now.

I have patiently waited for a fix that never seems to come and have restored my phone several times and reset network settings for temporary relief, but I have had enough. I spoke to Apple support today and set up an appointment with a Genius for Wednesday. The Apple rep was willing to do an advanced replacement, but I knew I would be near the Apple store. Some folks are reporting getting an iPhone free of issues. Not even sure if it is worth exchanging, but at this point, it's worth it to me to try.

4.1 is a relatively bigger update than a 4.0.x, and rather than wasting time making 4.0.x updates, they're focusing on 4.1 so it will actually be released this side of christmas. as stated, if it was just a small code fix, they'd have done a 4.0.x release. chances are 4.1 is coming in the next month, so some patience is required. they have to beta test it to make sure it works and to make sure nothing else gets broken code-wise, i'd rather they test it as much as they need rather than rush out a half baked update.

I had an appointment at the Genius bar yesterday to try and see about the proximity sensor and they guy took it in the back and couldn't reproduce the issue and said he CAN'T replace it since its been replaced 3 times already. I told him they should replace it every day until its fixed if I wanted it. They can't sell us a product and tell us it will be fixed soon, hopefully. Anyways this issue has really gotten to be very intrusive on my company day to day conversations. I can be on the phone for 30 minutes and everything is fine, all of the sudden it just hangs up, mutes, dials someone else or starts adding someone as a contact, facetime, etc. VERY AGGREVATING!!!

The worst is if you are on the phone with a business that uses touch tone self help to get to someone eventually and then after a long wait, the phone hangs up. VERY AGGREVATING!!!

I hope we see an update a lot sooner than what has been mentioned in mid to late September because anything later than today is too long!

I have other issues with the phone also but this one takes the cake and in my opinion is WAY WORSE than the reception issue.

hmm how odd - I have no such problems.. but I can understand what you guys are going through.. that must be really really annoying

chances are 4.1 is coming in the next month, so some patience is required.

At this point I believe there will not be an iOS update until the "big announcement" next month, which may include such things as a new iPod touch with iPhone 4 like capabilities, a new $99 iTV with iOS, and maybe a downsized iPad. The reason I bring this up is that they will not release the new version of iOS until the cat is officially out of the bag, because the new iOS will contain obvious clues to those products.

In short, you can't have your proximity fix now or for the next month. And the biggest reason for this is that Apple has a marketing schedule to hold to.

Also, I have had no proximity sensor problems since restoring to a clean setup the other day; this has had mixed results for folks. I have spent all of about three minutes on the phone since the change. Hopeful but not optimistic that I have seen the last of the issue.

I can't believe this hasn't been fixed two months after launch. Why didn't they just release a small update for this bug fix?! But, it's coming soon I guess...

4.1 is quite far through the beta testing phase, so it has to be fairly close to being released, as 4.0's last beta version was 4 and if i read correctly, 4.1 is on beta 3. it makes sense that apple will announce 4.1 at the event mid next month and i would guess that it will be available after that, or the same week, so therefore should have it next month as i said. there's no sense in making people wait for 4.1 longer than they have to as it will be for many devices that are already out.

If this problem isn't fixed by the time I go to school in late September, I'm going to go to Apple and just have my phone replaced. I've seen a lot of reports of people replacing their phones and having zero issues. Unfortunately for me, I do not have an Apple store within 2 hours of my house. The closest one is actually the one at my school in San Luis Obispo.

4.1 Beta 3 does NOT "fix" or even reduce the problems with the sensor. Sorry.

Just got my iPhone yesterday. Here's been my short experience with it (making calls):

08/23/10: Call to Kitty. 10 mins. No problems.
08/24/10: Auto shop - call cut out twice. I think I muted him (or myself).
08/24/10: Call to Andy as a test. 5 mins. No problems.
08/24/10: Call to mom as a test. 5 mins. No problems.
08/24/10: Call to Mike as a test. 5 mins. Speakerphone started up out of nowhere.

So a little under 50% of my calls have had problems. I tried the Reset Network settings this morning, but experienced the speakerphone faux pas after that, so I'm thinking that didn't help.

I've got 29 days...if this problem isn't fix within that time, phone is going back and I'm going back to my 3GS. I won't deal with this kind of problem.

That's exactly how mine functions. I finally got an answer back from Apple and since they escalated my problems to higher authority and I will be able to return my iPhone 4 to a Apple store for a full refund even though I'm out of my 30 days. I bought the iPhone 4 the day it was released.

If I were you I would use it for the first 28-29 days and if they don't come out with a fix then I would DEFINITELY return it the phone [most of the time] can be freaking pain in the a$$ because of this and has aggravated to no ends.

I will miss the iPhone 4's beauty and will get another one once the problems are addressed but don't listen to promises on getting it fix. If they don't fix it within the next 28-29 days RETURN IT, it's not worth the headaches.

Thats what I heard as well.

They need to release this 4.1 so that we all can realize that its not software related and we all finally go to the genius bar and get our phones replaced with one with updated hardware that works right and not get told to wait for this so called "Fix" that will NEVER come.

Please let me just get a new phone cause we all know as well you do apple that you cant fix this with a software update you morons!!!

well the reset network settings fixed mine, not a single problem in a day and a half.

weird that in beta 3 its not fixed as people were claiming it was in the earlier ones.

I hope yours really is fixed but what does "Fixed" mean to you?

I haven't had a single issue in about a week but an issue is something actually happening.... but though nothing happens it doesn't mean your screen doesn't flash on and off throughout your call.

So when you say fixed... every call you have made you have been able to see your screen and tell me that throughout all your calls when up to your ear the screen says 100% dark throughout the entire call?

Thats "Fixed" not having a call put on hold or speakerphone for a few days is not "fixed" it just means it hasn't happened yet.

Every call I make after a few minutes I look to see if the screen flashes on and off throughout the call and without fail it does Every Time! But just because it comes on doesn't mean that something is going to happen.

There is no Fix for this issue people! ... Its all in your head guys... If you have this issue once you will always have it until you either replace your phone with one with up to date PS hardware or until this So Called Update comes out that suppose to miraculously fix this hardware issue.

The only thing we can do is wait for the update and cross our fingers but at least when it does come out and there is no fix in the update I can take my phone back to apple and get a replacement in hopes of getting an updated phone without this issue without being told by a nerd genius "There is an update coming out for that and we cant do anything until then"

We will wait and see.

No joy. As expected the issue is back.

well i could easily replicate the issue before i tried the 'reset network settings' afterwards i couldn't. and before the fix, i was muting about 70% of calls and cutting people off in any given day, now, not a single one. no flashing whatsoever, as i've been checking with a mirror to see. so yea, i call that fixed.

What's pissing me off is that if this can be fixed with software they pushed out the anti-jailbreak update and kept the supposed proximity sensor fix under wraps.

How am I supposed to return mine when the stores are out of stock? I also refuse to buy a new product only for them to give me something outta some black box as a replacement. I want a new working unit... just like I paid for.

I don't want to disagree with you as i really hope yours is fixed, but MANY have tried this and nothing, but someone came up with this for a reason so theres a potential for this working for a very small some but not most.

Hope all is well and it doesn't return! :)

Am guessing the jailbreak fix was a simple quick fix as it was exploiting some loophole in code, probably easily identified, the sensor is going to be much more complicated problem.

Bah...Same issue here. This renders this phone useless for me. These are the kinda problems I expected from HTC and the such a few years ago, not from Apple now. Oh well, back to the 3GS.
