Or me...and the team I support...still looking for my first live demo of prox sensor issue...not saying it isn't real, just not real pervasive in my experience.
If you were anywhere near me, I would gladly show you not one, but two live demos of it. I bought iPhone 4's for my wife and I last week, and both of them have the proximity sensor issue - "cheek dialing" keypad numbers, attempting to initiate Face Time calls, muting calls, hanging up, etc. It's not a "user error" issue....I've owned a 3G for well over two years and never once had the issue with it...I know how to hold and use an iPhone when making phone calls. It's not an accessory issue - it happens with both phones, both with and without cases (and neither of us have screen protectors). It's a hardware and/or firmware issue, plain and simple. Steve Jobs has publicly acknowledged it and said they're working on a fix for it, so it's obviously "real pervasive" enough to warrant Apple's attention.

I'm not saying every iPhone 4 has the issue, but it certainly seems prevalent enough to assume that it's a significant issue. I'm not one to get all hysterical about a phone - it's just a phone - but it definitely is an irritating issue, and one I'd be very glad to see fixed.

It amazes me the defensive attitude of some iPhone owners who are not convinced by the proximity issue. All I can say is you are lucky you have not experienced it. I also don't see why we have to be apologetic about moaning about it, we have paid good money for a phone to actually be a phone not just an Internet and App device, I can use my iPad for that.

Those of us that have the issue have every right to be more than a little peeved that we can't relax and use the phone properly because of the continious problems experienced cutting off callers etc.

I have found resetting the system has given temporary relief which has made me keep the phone instead of returning it last week which I was all set to do.

The fact it has taken so long for a fix to appear is a worry, as it doesn't bode well that it can be done !

agree fully. which is why after 2 iphone 4's I'm going back to a 3GS until the next Apple hardware update. At least the proximity sensor works as it's supposed to on the 3GS

i believe the proximity sensor issue, i had it, the reset network settings seems to have done the trick, i'm on 6 days no issues and i used to be able to easily replicate it before that, but cannot even get it to replicate at all now. so i'm glad mines fine

I'm equally tired of being told that my phone must have the problem, I just haven't seen it yet. I don't doubt your experience at all. I'm as perplexed as anyone on this thread.

What I do know is that I ask every IP4 owner I come across. Most don't have or the issue but they are aware of what it is from the media. They know what to look for, they're just not seeing it.

What does all this mean? It's a dang peculiar problem and a tough one for Apple to fix. It sure seems to me that if it was pure hardware, that would have been discovered and fixed on the line long ago and new phones wouldn't have the problem. Since some do, it's more likely a combination of issues.

I certainly have a big problem with the proximity sensor with my first and replacement phone. I was going to go back to my old iphone when i read a fix was coming soon.

Gosh it really is sad how much bickering there is about the new iPhone 4. I don't know why there still is, either...

It's definitely flawed. I mean you can't hold it naked because the signal drops, you can't use it against your ear because your face activates the darn thing, and you can't use BT headsets because everyone will claim you sound like you're underwater.

So right now you can only use the phone with the wired headset or on speakerphone.

THAT is pathetic. I really hope 4.1 fixed the BT and proximity sensor issues...

thankfully i can use mine perfectly fine :) no complaints here.

Once again this seems to be an issue as to how you hold it. On short sweet convorsations this issue is non existant for me under 5 mins.

Ones over 15 mins I tend to move around where I hold the phone as it starts to warm up a little ( not lots but enough to annoy me) so i hold the earpiece close to my ear but move the mouthpiece away from my face at around a 30 degree angle if we are being precice.

This lets enough light bounce off my ear onto the light sensor to activate the screen.

I would not have ever noticed this problem or any other issues that are on here if it wasnt for people making a big deal of everything.

Really?!?!.. So now it's everyone else's fault? You would have never noticed hanging up on people, connecting to facetime, hitting the speaker phone, muting a call, etc. etc. if it wasn't for people "making a big deal"? That's classic, really, that is... People aren't making a big deal out of this for no reason- it IS a big deal... That can't even be denied anymore.. When you've got developers making apps to help people get thru a simple phone call there's a big problem...

big man throwing insults lol. i thought i'd lighten the thread up :) you're contributions aren't that much better anyway...

How did that "lighten the thread up"? I don't agree with insults or anything like that, but I'm also not a fan of someone just stirring the pot for no other reason than to get under peoples skin- which is exactly what you did...

I couldn't agree more with this statement... The people that are lucky enough not to have this issue, for whatever reason, seem to be really defensive... Some are almost taking it personal... That's weird.. If you don't have it, I'm happy for you, wish I could say the same, and I agree it's an odd situation in that MANY people have it and apparently many don't.. But to get defensive and actually claim it's not an issue is just plain weird.. It's a phone with an apparent design flaw, it's nothing personal

Woa Hold up.

The signal issue - not noticable unless your looking at the bars (before the big bar update) Only an issue for those unfortuante to live in a low signal area.

Prox issue - Not that annoying dont put the phone on your cheek, I have never cut any one off from this issue the only thing you can see is the backlight going on and off if you hold it a certain way.

both issues are a non issue for me and only noticed because of the large number of people complaining.

NOTE - I said non issue for ME!

I swear people on here are ridiculous. I can understand stating it's a non issue for you if you genuinely can't replicate it or even if it doesn't bother you. It's the goons who choose to say stupid crap like don't put it to your face it's a total non issue for everyone. IT'S A GD PHONE. What else is someone suppose to do with it. Why should someone have to stand there like a statue to make a call or use a bluetooth headset to fix this mess. I

When I read your post I laughed. The proximity sensor issue did all those things to me in that order.

not at all, i was just saying that mine doesn't have the issue. way to read far too much into what i post mate.

Hey, if I did read too much into it, my sincerest apologies.. That's the way it appeared to me, but I've been wrong before, and will be wrong again, so I stand corrected...

Updated to 4.1 GM yesterday. Hours later I got another prox malfunction.

Once it's out next week and I confirm the version I have is the same as the released version it's back to the Apple store with me.

Here's the MD5 of the 4.1 update I installed.

Can you really bring it to the Apple store and exchange even if they provided an update to fix it? To be honest I have this issue a lot and it seems 4.1 isn't fixing it. Also, it's kinda difficult to replicate the issue. I have a feeling Apple geniuses will just turn away all replacements solely based on the proximity sensor issue due to 4.1

Apple's on record claiming 4.1 fixes the proximity issue. If my iPhone is still doing it after the 4.1 release goes public I believe I have the right to insist that Apple either show me how I erred in updating my device, or give me a replacement.
