My iPhone went from perfect to slightly annoying now =/

The proximity issue is ridiculous.

I had a phone call today and my phone ended up putting them on speaker, then mute, then it opened up my contacts list.

i know this may come as a shock to you here on this forum, but most buyers of iphones do not visit apple-related message boards, much less post comments.

I know that most buyers dont visit the message board...so that is why i multiplied the number of posts about it BY TEN! to try and account for that fact.

go a little further, multiply it BY 100! You still only get a 7% failure rate. That isn't too terrible, though it is worse than the .7% I mentioned earlier, which, if I had to guess, is much closer to the true value. Multiplying by 100 is probably a gross overestimate.

EDIT: just notice I didn't post the actual math in my first post, just the results. So here it is.

1292*10=12920 (this is where I got the 10% from)

12920/1800000 (1.8 million iP4 sold)=.007

.007=.7%

What the "h - e - double hockey sticks"??? I'm not knocking you man....but 4 phones?? What could possibly warrant that?

Very noticeable dust/lint under the screens and behind the camera lenses. The Genius guys just looked at the phone and said yeah, and swapped them. Didn't even have to look carefully, it was in plain view. Yeah, its pretty ridiculous I did it that many times.

Fair enough, but I think you're still greatly overestimating the number of buyers who post. Secondly, I almost guarantee it's happening to lots of users and they think they're doing something wrong or they're the only ones. It's been acknowledged by all the tech blogs and if mainstream media ever picks it up, lots of users will say holy s**t thats happening to me too!

I am muting people the most. sometimes hanging up on them, rarely speakerphone, rarely contacts. I guess that's an indication of my specific holding habits. Now, if there's even a moment of silence in a conversation, I'm taking the s**t off my head thinking, **** mute again! Usually it's not! sometimes it is. but GDIT, never once with my 3G/3GS!

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7)

Someone should definitely start a thread about this issue.

Mine only has the issue if i press the phone against my ear. If I hold it in my hand, it works fine. But if i try to hold it with my shoulder instead of my hand, bad things happen.

Yup, exactly. That's the ONLY problem my first iPhone 4 had. I had it replaced today, so we'll see how this new one works.

. My 3GS never had a problem nommatfef how I held it to my face, or when I pinched it between my shoulder and my ear.

My 3G didn't either, and I used the ole shoulder grip quite often. I cna't tell you how many times I've hung up on people and/or opened menus while on the call. It's REALLY annoying. I hope this new phone i just got tonight is better.

Was having proximity sensor issues with my iPhone 4

From day one I've had proximity sensor issues when I'm not using my Motorola H721 Bluetooth earpiece. Went in this morning at 11:00 am with an appointment with the Genius Bar at the local Apple Store (scheduled it last night using the Apple Store app). It took 30 seconds to explain the problem to him. I didn't have to re-create the issue, and he replaced it, and he even gave me a free plug adapter that I had misplaced. I haven't had any proximity issues with the new replacement phone.

I did have Ghost Armor put on my phone over a week ago, which I removed while speaking with the Genius guy before handing it over to him. I'm wondering if the Ghost Armor had anything to do with the proximity sensor issue, or if they have upgraded the sensor in the second shipment... I wish I would have tested my original phone after removing the Ghost Armor. Now I'm not sure I want to put the Ghost Armor back on the front of my replacement iPhone.

I don't have a screen protector on. Tried the full reset. Still it drives me nuts dialing other contacts while i'm on a call. It's terrible. MY phone was backed up from my 3G. I've read though even people who selected new device have the problems too. It's a mystery as why some people have the problem and some don't. Seems like it's the software since people with 3GS phones are now experiencing it too. Just wish they would acknowledge it's a problem and say a fix is coming out.

I don't have any proximity issues, but I'm left handed. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Im inclined to believe this is a hardware issue, as I dont have the problem at all, so taking it to apple will probably net you a new replacement phone that hopefully all is well on

I don't have the proximity sensor prob either. Neither does the Wife. I think it's because we didn't get them on launch day. We got them on the 29th. If that makes a difference I don't know. We also don't have the Signal issue. NO bumper case here.:D

I have a launch day iphone 4 no proximity sensor issues.. The screen turns off at my ear and only comes back on if I move it away.. I haven't had any issues with face ending or muting etc either.

Then again I am also left handed I will try to hold the phone with my right hand.. Maybe again this is a your holding it wrong situation? :)

I've had my phone 3 days and have both problems.

The proximity sensor is the biggest problem. I set this up as a NEW phone, not a backup. I've tested and verified while looking into a mirror while on a call. The display goes dark for a few seconds and then will start flickering on/off, sometimes staying on for 10-15 seconds. This was holding the phone tight to my ear.

I've never had this happen to me. Good luck.

+1. I have not experienced any of the issues that the op seems to have

I will have to say, that until last week, I was one of those who thought it was not affecting me. Then I was on the phone with someone who I thought was kind of dingbatty and I kept hearing DTMF tones like a button being pressed. I was saying in my head, you stupid idiot, lay off the keys!!

Then when I was hanging up, I saw my phone was on the keypad (and not the usual screen with facetime, speaker, etc), since this was at my doctors office and I had to hit 0 to talk to the receptionist.

I still did not put two and two together fully until a couple of days ago, when I talked to several people and the phone kept going to speaker in the middle of a call and when I pulled the phone away from my ear it had a contact pulled up on the screen like it was trying to conference call someone.

So, I guess I am the dingbatty one for not realizing it was MY phone doing it.

I have done the network settings rest eterday, so we will see if that helps any.

At first I didn't have this issue either...now it's annoying the hell out of me. So many offing issues with this phone + iads spying, I may be sending it back.

Just FYI, I had a week 22 phone replaced for this very reason. Have a week 26 now and don't seem to have any issues, but its still early to tell.

I did set up the phone that had issues at new but that didn't seem to make things any better. My guess is that its a hardware issue. Why Apple would change either the position or type of sensor is beyond me. It's worked for the last three major iPhone revisions. Its also possibly that this new type of glass has affected it. I'll report back if I have any more issues. Wish the white balance issue would get worked out as well.

I've been slow to pay attention to this issue because I don't spend a huge amount of time on the phone. But I am definitely having this problem as well, on a week 26 phone using a backup from my 3G. I did a network settings reset a few days ago while troubleshooting a separate issue and that hasn't helped. If I get confirmed word that a clean restore fixes it I'll try that, but I am quite skeptical.

Let's hope 4.0.1 does something about this; my intuition is that an adjusted threshold and/or a tweaked smoothing algorithm will do the trick.

I had this issue and did the reset but it didn't help then I figured out it was the case, left over from my 3GS and fitting loosely, that was causing it. Got a bumper and it woks perfectly now.

I don't have the problem with my iPhone 4, but I did with my iPhone 1st generation. I found out the stupid case I bought was covering the sensor. I took the case off and it worked.

I'm not saying this is the issue here though. My brother doesn't have a case and he has the problem too. So it is hit and miss. I hope my wife's doesn't have the problem. She will get her phone Monday.

I mentioned this in an earlier post. I think some folks are slow to catch on to this happening to them because perhaps they don't spend longer blocks of time on the phone. It's unlikely to happen in a short conversation because you'll be less likely to adjust the phone's position.

Many more people are going to soon realize this is in fact happening to them. Most users of the phone have no idea about the proximity sensor or how it's supposed to work.
