Ok who’s happy with bar 2017 MacBook Pro (warching in bed)

Sometimes these forums while helpful become an echo chamber of issues with our apple products.

My question is, looking to replace my MacBook 2015 for a 17 MBP nontouch bar base model, but is anyone happy with their none touch bar 2017 MacBook Pro?

I’ve read loud fan is an issue where people report even for streaming the mbp is loud. Can anyone report how the MacBook is for YouTube viewing in bed where the phone is on the mattress? My MacBook is dead silent but sometimes I really want a slightly larger screen and better keyboard for occasional typing. And the faster processes might be nice. My use in browsing, iTunes, photo management only. No photoshop or picture editing.

Well... why do you want to replace your perfectly fine working MacBook Pro with a new one? Especially considering your uses amount to something you could do with even a regular MacBook?

Save your money my friend - do the rational thing and don't buy something you don't need.

To me, it was more audible when streaming a higher res video and placed on an insulating surface like a bed as opposed to placing it on a hard surface and streaming higher res (where the fans would sometimes run, but be relatively quiet.) However, I'm not really bothered by fan noises so this was not that big of an issue for me. If you really dislike the fan noise, the 2017 retina MacBook might be a good alternative - IMO the keyboard is hugely improved over the 2016/2015 models and, like your 2015, it does not have a fan. Processing capability is vastly improved over the 2017, as is the battery life!

I bit of fan noise is normal but people are reporting a high pitch fan noise. It doesn’t seem like you are experiencing this. And typing does suck on the MacBook 2015. I tried the mbp at the store and it’s a big improvement. When I have to write long, it is a pain in the butt. And the screen size would be really nice.

Here's my experience with the 2017 nonTN MBP13:

  • typing is loud - will wake any family sleeping nearby or in the next room
  • typing for work - is horrible on this new keyboard, I much prefer the 2015 keyboard
  • reliability of the 2017 keyboard is seriously bad - just search and compare with complaints for other models
  • gets very very hot when streaming - uncomfortable in bed
  • fans goes crazy - maximum possible - (screenshot showing above theoretical max)

I had none of these issues with my 2015 MBP13.

I did not experience the high pitched fan noise some others have, even when running resource-intensive programs that would push the fan to a higher RPM - for that matter, I did not experience any of the other issues some others have. However, I no longer have that computer as a 2017 retina MacBook did a better job at meeting my needs for my ultraportable.

Honestly, since you want to upgrade to a better, faster machine, I'd say invest a little more money and get the TouchBar/TouchID model and max out the processor specs when you customize it. Personally, I view the stock model options as options for people entering the Mac market, but when you have a fairly recent MBP as it is, to make the upgrade worth your money I personally think you should spend a little more and get a true upgrade.

Now, I understand if financial constraints are a limiting factor for you, but personally if you are looking for performance I believe you should go for the 15-inch model which includes the dedicated video card at a minimum of 2GB GDDR5 at the base model stock configuration.

In your personal upgrade situation, going from a 2015 MBP 13" to a non-TouchBar 2017 MBP 13" is really... not worth the upgrade. This is my opinion, but I feel like you'll need to invest more money to make it a true upgrade, or pass on this years' models and wait for a better future option.

Sorry, I guess this being the MBP forum and from your post I guess I just assumed - my bad.

But still, the 13-inch MBP non-TouchBar model is very basic, entry level, MacBook Pro computing. I still don't believe it's worthy of your upgrade from your current model, for the price you pay and the differences you get from your current machine, and the rest is basically still applicable from my post above.
