I had a grandfathered unlimited data plan with AT&T plus unlimited talk and text. My bill was $165 after FAN. My first bill under the new unlimited plan is $50 less and that's with a portion prorated from my old plan. I don't think AT&T would have wanted me to give up the grandfathered plan. They are going to make +$50 less a month and now I have tethering as well.

Can you tell me what your breakdown is? How are you paying less with the new plan versus the old plan with a FAN discount?

I finally switched away from my AT&T grandfathered unlimited plan to the new Verizon unlimited plan. Including the FAN discount and recent price increase, my AT&T plan rose to $89 which was still good -- before all this sudden unlimited data competition.

Now I've unlimited on my phone, 10GB of tethering which has already been useful and calling to and within Mexico and Canada. My unlimited Verizon plan will be about $92 including taxes and fees *but* I found out I have an employer discount with them which will take a few billing cycles to apply--so it may end up *cheaper*.

The data speeds on Verizon seem to be considerably faster than AT&T in my area right now and my phone works at my Mom's house. I never got service there under AT&T. Total win.

I'm so glad the FCC didn't let AT&T eat up T-mobile. However, I have a feeling the new FCC will not be nearly so consumer oriented.

How did you get an employer discount on the Verizon unlimited plan?

But I thought that Verizon was not doing FAN discounts on the unlimited plans....

After finding the mention of a Verizon discount on my employers page, I followed a link to verify my "discount" and provided my work email address. After that, it itemized parts of my service which gave me the *impression* that I'd get one and even gave me a tracking number for the request. It's entirely possible that I'll get no discount I guess, but even at full price I like my new plan much better than what I had with AT&T with the FAN.

Here's an FAQ on Verizon about it:

Employer discounts certainly exist, it's just that most of them don't apply to unlimited plans. Just those related to military/veterans/government basically.

Maybe they're pulling an AT&T move.
Yes, the discount is applied to your account, it just doesn't provide any savings with your current chosen monthly plan :D
The discount is there listed though:D lol

Old Plan (23% FAN only worked against the $35 Unlimited Data)
$99.99 Nation Unlimited
$35.00 Data Unlimited for iPhone on 4G LTE with VVM
$20.00 Messaging Unlimited
$00.00 International Roaming - Expanded
+taxes

New Bill (weird because of prorated amounts)
$110
+taxes

That's way too expensive for one line of unlimited data with no subsidy, no tethering and with taxes you're up to $125-130 a month.
That's nuts.

My bill was over $160 a month after taxes and FAN. Now I'll be over $50 less a month.

New bill will be higher. Albeit that it it includes 10gb tethering. End result probably $30 higher

Hmm. Now I see the difference between your discount and mine. I receive 20% off but towards your $99.99 not $35. So for me it's a bigger discount. That's why it wasn't worth it for me to switch to the newer plan. I would end up paying more.

I just compared my bills with the original grandfathered unlimited to the new unlimited plan (that was offered for only a few days, before the current unlimited plan)

Both plans are for 2 phone lines- Not including my Next phone payment plan since it is the same with both plans

Original grandfathered unlimited:
$60 for 700 mins
$20 for unlimited family texts
$35 Data ($40 now)
$9.99 for 2nd phone line
$35 Data (now $40)
-------------------------
$159.99 plus tax
($22.00) FAN discount
------------------------
$137.00 plus tax - (would have gone up to $147 plus tax if I kept that plan)

New unlimited plan (that was offered without tethering for only a few days, before the current unlimited plan)

$60 Plan
$40 Access
$40 Access for 2nd line
-------------------------
$140 plus tax
($10.20) FAN Discount
--------------------------
$129.80 plus tax

If I was to change to the new unlimited plan that includes tethering it would be $145 plus tax and no FAN discount allowed.

I know there are other carriers that are cheaper but I got the $650 trade in offer (x2) for my iphone 6 plus and if I switch carriers I lose that monthly rebate and lose most of the trade in value. So I would lose approx $1000 (2 phones)

Besides what ATT is telling me i will save if I switch, is there any potential downfall to leaving grandfather unlimited to unlimited choice.
My wife's phone has the 2GB limit which she sometimes goes over ($10) and one flipphone that doesnt do data but added to the plan is only $20 a month. I cant find a cheaper plan or pay as you go as i use the flip as an alternative home phone for my mom who babysits the kids.

The devil is in the taxes, fees and if you have any FAN discount. For us, we went from $245 a month with a grandfathered UDP with a 24% FAN discount to the unlimited plus plan at $195. It went up to around $240 after taxes and fees. So we are gonna save only $5-10 a month, but now everyone has unlimited data, tethering and free roaming in Canada and Mexico.
