Holding out still. My bill is 70 bucks a month with the grandfathered plan. No plan has come close to matching the old one.

I'm gonna dump att soon, this crap is unacceptable, just got my first bill under the new unlimited plus and my bill is $30 more!!! It use to be cheaper under my older grandfathered account...on the website it said it was going to be $10 more...of course their taxes and fees gonna bite you.

I'll switch to T-Mobile, their $25 DIRECTV discount is not worth it when I can save close to another $40 if I were to switch to T-Mobile.

I'll switch to T-Mobile
Give it a test drive via a prepaid sim before you commit, especially if you have a family plan. See for yourself - don't rely on what others say as everyone has unique usage patterns. TMO may work well in your area. Then again, it may not and you'll be sorely disappointed. Speaking from experience....

Wouldn't that be the case for every carrier?
No matter what their ads and commercials claim every place and carriers service will vary by location.

Yes, of course, which is why I think he(she) should give it a test run if at all possible before committing. AT&T worked very well for me but I was frustrated with to no end with TMO, as was my family. The money I was saving wasn't worth all of the dropped calls, weak/no service, etc that I didn't experience before. I could've avoided all of that had I done a test run, which I regret not doing. That's all I'm saying.

Yes, people should do the same for every carrier.
Not just for Tmobile.
Just because you pay more for AT&T or Verizon doesn't mean you get good service everywhere and its not worth it to have dropped calls or weak service and still pay an arm and a leg. If you're catching my drift ;)

I agree and think we're on the same page. Anyone would be stupid to pay more for marginal service when they can get the same or better service at a lower price. I only mentioned TMO in my post was because he mentioned switching to them in his. My main point was that choosing a carrier based solely on cost may prove not to be the wisest decision in the end.

Yes, if that was the case I'd be on Sprint for many years like @eyoungren :D lol

So, If I get a prepaid sim do I have to switch or port my number? Or will it still work since my phone is unlocked?

In my defense back in 1999 I had no f*ing clue about cell phones and carriers. The Samsung SCH-3500 my wife and I wanted at the time was only offered by Sprint at the office store we were shopping at.

We didn't have a data plan until 9 years later and it was only at that point that the terms 3G, 1xRTT and LTE came into my awareness. Up until that point all we used our phones for was calling (no, no texting either) and Sprint handled that just fine.

am i missing something here? i thought the grandfathered ATT unlimited plan was $40? they increased $5, $5 and then $5.

How did your taxes/fees go up so much? Did you have a discount on your grandfathered account?

Thinking of dumping my grandfathered udp for the unlimited plus.

So been holding out on this one for a while (its definitely paid for itself over the past few years as carriers have gone through the Unlimited->Tiered->Unlimited transitions).

Now that carriers have finally come full circle, seems like its time to finally get rid of this old plan and jump to ATT's new unlimited plan. With the recent hike current price I am paying is $95, so it looks like the new unlimited plan is $5 cheaper at 90.

Any other holdouts on here? What are you guys planning on doing?

(and before I get any comments about how ATT sucks and there are way cheaper carriers...I know, but I have and old corporate lifetime discount on the line which gives me 20% off so I'm paying closer to $70).

I had the grandfathered plan since the beginning and swore I'd never let it go. Had it on 2 phones, wife and I.

I have 3 teenage kids who didn't have phones at the time of the UDP's and they were on the 3GB plan, cost me $40 each for the data/phone/text plans all-in. But their usage became unmanageable, all that Snapchat and Instagram, all those streaming videos, they were costing me an average of $90 a month in overages.

By taking all 5 lines to the new Unlimited Plus plan, my monthly bills will go from near $400 a month to $205. Couldn't be happier to not have the aggravation of the kids overages, the arguments towards the end of the billing cycle. And as far as the wife and I, no real change other than we get tethering for the first time and I must tell you it's really nice to have. Not going to need it more than 10x a year, but on those days you need it it's very cool.

Hotel wi-fi can be very inconsistent and at low speed, logging onto free wi-fi at a cafe or an airport can take 5 aggravating minutes and be limited to 30 minutes of use, at a conference you often have to fight for a wi-fi connection with others around you, and there are always security concerns on a public network. I can now take out my iPhone, hit a slider, and have my notebook on high speed internet in about 10 seconds.

The first bill usually includes a fee for changing plans and a prorated amount of the old to new plan. Check a bit more carefully and you might see how that breaks out.

Verizon also doesn't allow FAN discounts on unlimited plans. I have a pretty high discount, and I went from an old plan with limited minutes and 2GB data to one with unlimited minutes and 8GB data for the same price. Plus I have a bunch of data that keeps rolling over and a 1GB per month bonus. The unlimited plan would be too expensive to justify it since don't use all 8GB each month, but I also don't worry about going over. I also have very little use for tethering. I have an ipad but I can do anything I do on there on my phone (it's a 3rd gen ipad). The only downside is the smaller screen.

i was a faithful user of FoxFi on my old company phone (unlimited data) but when we changed hands and got new phones, we got Samsungs with Knox so we can't do anything other than the few things they allow. My phone has been bugging me from the start to install a software update, but I can't even do that.

But if you combine it with a FAN, then those $40 turn into much less. Personally, it makes no sense to dump my grandfathered as I would end up paying more... much more.

Can you show us the breakdown in dollars? I don't see how switching to the new plan would cost that much more each month.

BJ

The UDP legacy is going to be $45 as of this month (March 2017). They just keep raising the price...

Dave
It was originally $30/mo, then it went up $5 last year and now another $5 this month (March 2017). As a result, it is now $40/mo prior to any FAN discount you may have.

If that is cost of your service with the latest price increase (and without a FAN discount), you have a very good deal. Mine is now $80/mo after the increase, so it is still not worth it to me to give up the grandfathered UDP. Tethering would be a nice bonus, but for me, it's not worth the extra $10/mo.
