Tap to click not working?

This is rather strange. After updating to 10.5.7 and getting 4-fingers working via multitouch kext, everything seems fine. Using it just fine, but for some reason sometimes "tap to click" just craps out and stops working. Going back into trackpad prefs and unchecking and re-checking "tap to click" makes it work again, but after a while it will crap out again. Anyone else experience this?

I have the same issue. My 4 finger actions actually disappeared as well.

How are you editing the kext? Are you just installing your old one? Because 10.5.7 came in with a new kext file, as I understand it. Using the old one may have issues.
what does 4 fingers do on the pad? i havent really heard about this
A swipe up and down activate expose "show desktop" and "show all windows", respectively, and a swipe left/right is the application switcher ("command-tab"). To use the latter swipe sideways and then tap with all four fingers again.

How long does it take to crap out? I just activated it (I don't normally use it), and it seems fine for the 5-10 minutes I tried it.

Here's the 10.5.6 modified kext for those that are still confused as to how to edit it.

Follow the same instructions as the old one:

Copy, backup, or rename the old .kext (system/library/extensions/AppleUSBMultitouch.kext)

Move in the new one.

Restore permissions (Disk Utility - Repair permissions)

Reboot.

I've finally tried this and when I get to the copying bit I get an error message

"The operation cannot be completed because the item "MultitouchHID" is in use"

Does anyone else get this error and if so how can I correct it?

Thanks for any help (I'm running 10.5.7 btw)

Sounds like you're either trying to move or overwrite the original .kext file, which is in use by the operating system. Copy the .kext file in your /System/Library/Extensions folder to your Documents or Desktop or whatever (to back up), then delete it from your /System/Library/Extensions folder (IIRC moving to trash should work when moving to some other folder doesn't). Then drag in the new version to your system folder. When you restart you can empty the trash.

Also, for those interested, 4-finger swipe for all Multitouch capable Macs appears to be a feature of Snow Leopard. See here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/refinements/enhancements-refinements.html#systempref

I didn't use an old kext, I just pasted the two keys
Code:
<key>TrackpadFourFingerGestures</key>
<true/>
<key>TrackpadSecondaryClickCorners</key>
<true/>
into the plist.

It's sort of on and off... if I go into trackpad prefs, turn off and back on the tap to click, then it works again, but later it will stop working.

The Snow Leopard news (if it's true) should fix all this though... I guess I'll just put up with the problem until September :D

O'Grady's PowerPage said:
Still, for pre-2008 and plastic MacBook owners, the following steps (courtesy of the MacRumors forums) can help bring multi-touch functionality to your notebook.
Well, O'Grady's PowerPage is a trap for gullible people like me. Here, I thought I could do it with my Mid 2007 MacBook, but afterwards, and when I looked here, the answer was a resounding "No." I'm in the same boat as the poor bloke with the outdated MBP.

Is hacked Expose working in 10.5.7?

Hi guys, I'm new here, and I'm even new to Macs! So I'm both excited, but frustrated - I wish I could work this out.

On 10.5.6, I successfully followed the instructions to get Expose working with 4 finger swipe on my 1st gen Macbook Air. But, I can't get it working *at all* with 10.5.7. I have a few questions...

- Has anyone got it working reliably with 10.5.7?
- If so, could they say how they did it (if it's different to the method for 10.5.6)?
- If so, could they even post the altered .kext files for general consumption?

That would be amazing.

I'm guessing we'll have the same problem when updating to 10.5.8. If you do, follow the instructions here to get it working. I haven't done it yet, but it should work.

edit:
update 10.5.8 does in fact remove this little modification, so once again, get the modified file, replace the old one, repair permissions, reboot, and done. It works. Tested.

When you replaced the file, did the computer tell you that you do not have sufficient privileges?

That's what my computer is telling me and it won't me replace the file even though I am admin

EDIT: I got it

10.5.8 - goodbye swipe on my macbook...

hi...

i´ve also a bunch of problems integrating the modification since the
10.5.8 update....
the modified kext seems not to work - followed all steps a few times...
:(

is there a new trick to get it running under the new version?

thx
:apple:

I did the kext replacement as usual and it works fine. 4 fingers on both my MBP and MBA with 10.5.8. Replace and fix permissions. Voila.

don't know for sure, but I think this was for the mbp only.

any snow leopard users can confirm that SL and four finger gestures work alright on the early 08 mbp?

Yep. Four-finger gestures are enabled by default in Snow Leopard for the Early 2008 MacBook Pro. No more hacking necessary.

To iAnas: no, four-finger gestures will not work on a MacBook white, for reasons that have been explained in this thread multiple times.

Chinese character input on white

I get that four finger gestures are not possible on the white macbook, but will it be possible to make the Chinese character input possible on the white:confused:?

and now we have inertia scrolling
do you miss or want the 3 finger gesture for moving windows? I use it mostly for navigation purposes but some might really want it

I want to try it, and currently am working on getting it working on my Early 2008 MBP.

EDIT: Check out my thread on 3 finger drag to know how to do it.
