Thanks for the info. I have got control of my keyboard and trackpad again, but I can't do two finger scroll anymore. Everything else seems to work though. Any ideas of what I should do?

Try Onyx from http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/download.html to repair permissions. My trackpad didn't have 2-finger scrolling when I repaired permissions with Disk Utility. After repairing permissions with Onyx and rebooting, I had 4-finger gestures. I hope it works for you :)

when i try to do anything with the .kext file, it tells me that i do not have sufficient access privileges to rename the item. How do I get around this?

I just tried using the other method (manually editing Info.plist from 10.5.6's AppleUSBMultitouch.kext). I only edited in TrackpadFourFingerGestures since TrackpadSecondaryClickCorners seems kind of useless.

The Trackpad prefpane now plays a different video showing off the four finger gestures with the old non-glass Trackpad (note the button in the attached image). Why would Apple make a video of this when the feature isn't even available without some minor tweaks?

can you attach your modified .kext on this one, accidentally deleted my original kext hence i cant edit my info.plist.

Tnxs

edit: no need, finally got it :)

Works like a charm on my early 2008 MBP, manualy editing kext didn't work, but downloading the ZIP and replacing the kext works fine. Thanks :)

does the application change work work for anyone ? i can swipe 4 finger left/right to bring it up but like the video i can't drag one finger across to select the particular app. i have to physically drag the mouse over the app i want to select. my kext is the one 10.5.6, posted here, everything else work, anyone know what i did wrong or how to fix this ?

If you watch the video closely, you can see that the mouse pointer is being used to select the applications and the new glass trackpad is clicked to open it.

This should work on all macs:
After doing the four finger swipe, use two fingers to select the application and tap with four fingers to open it.

Enjoy!

I tried manually editing just the trackpadfourfinger gestures using a plist editor, but ti didn't seem to work. I repaired permissions and cleared caches, but nothing shows up in the preferences.

Ok, I figured it out. In the /System/Library/ folder there is a file called Extensions.mkext. From what I gather this file is sort of a cache - it copies only the necessary kexts required. When you boot, it uses this file.

Now it periodically checks by way of comparing modification date with the Extensions folder - if it is different, it will go back in and find the kexts it needs and updates itself. You can see a temp file being created every time you do some business inside the Extensions folder.

At least that's how I think it works. So before, I was not getting the preferences pane for four finger, because I was editing the info.plist inside the kext (the kext doesn't show up as changed).

Again, that's how I THINK it works, based on my experimentation.

Also, not ALL WSTrackpad needs to be edited - I assume they refer to different model trackpads and/or hardware versions.

I get away with just editing the set of #2, for example. Well, here's hoping it's fine.

Here's the 10.5.6 modified kext for those that are still confused as to how to edit it.

Follow the same instructions as the old one:

Copy, backup, or rename the old .kext (system/library/extensions/AppleUSBMultitouch.kext)

Move in the new one.

Restore permissions (Disk Utility - Repair permissions)

Reboot.

Thanks for the attachment :)

Everything works perfect here :D

This is pretty awesome. I'm wondering why Apple never bothered to do this themselves if it's this easy.

thanxs mate, finally figured it out how to use that :D

is it just me, or do anyone elses zoom gestures in finder no longer work? I installed the edited kext in 10.5.6 and everything else works fine, but the pinch gestures in icon view seem gone now.

Its not longer a default feature in 10.5.6 to turn it back on go to Finder preferences

hmmmm

Any chance someone could stick this into an app i'm not to comfortable with messing with kexts as it always seems to mess up for me... given that i am travelling and this is my only pc im not too willing to risk that. i wonder if someone could collaborate with mulitclutch to incorporated this into thier newest update.

peace

Brian

So you would rather have an app that asks for your admin password and does stuff in the background without your knowledge? Sounds like a recipe for another trojan.

i tried to copy the kext in the thread here into my extensions directory and it said

'An error occured.

Operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error -36.)

src: /Users/damon/Downloads/AppleUSBMultitouch.kext
desc: /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBMultitouch.kext
item: /Users/damon/Downloads/AppleUSBMultitouch.kext'

ideas as to what is the problem? i repaired permissions before doing it (and backed up the old appleusbmultitouch.kext, but maybe i am missing something... i'm no permissions wiz ( i think that's why some people would want an app to just do it for them...)

Just tried this and works like a charm on a rev.A MacBook Air - so well in fact it almost makes me mad Apple hasn't included these already. Thanks!

cant find appleusbmultitouch.kext

Hey I can't seem to find the file appleusbmultitouch.kext in my Extensions folder...can someone help me out? I looked in both System\Library\Extensions as well as my own user's library extensions folder...

i have leopard 10.5.6 if that helps

No. The only machines this "hack" will work on are the Early 2008 MacBook Pros and the first rev. MacBook Air. All Macs made after those units, except the plastic MacBooks, come with all multitouch gestures enabled right out of the box. All Macs made before those units lack the hardware necessary to use any multitouch gestures other than two-finger scrolling.

Someone above said this will work with "all macs". Before I venture on, I need to know for sure, will this work on the early 2006 macbook pros?
