anyone with the same prefpane problem on a early macbook air?
what can i do do either make it work right or at least get my "old" 3 finger gestures back (without reinstalling)

thx

mo

Perhaps repair permissions?

Somebody who doesn't have this working send me an exported system profiler. I'll compare the differences in KEXT and Framework versions.

EDIT: The SystemConfiguration.framework seems to be involved too... anyone want to try that out as well?

Sure, I have a 1 year old MBP here I can send you files from... what all do you need?

Macbook 4,1

Hey, does this work with the macbook? I just got one in september, and I would love this functionality! If there is any success, just let me know.

No success. There are a lot of differences, even comparing 10.5.5 builds.

I had the impression that some people had this working, but it seems that only people who do complete OS transplants have gotten it working.

On Monday I have access to an Air, so I'll see if I can narrow down the missing pieces.

If this could somehow work on a WhiteBook that would be awesome, hopefully someone will make an installer for it like iScroll.

There is no chance of enabling multitouch gestures on the plastic MacBooks. Their trackpads do not have a multitouch chip in them.

The only Apple notebook models that have multitouch capability beyond two finger scrolling and two-finger right click are:

MacBook Air (all generations)
MacBook Pro (Early 2008)
MacBook Pro (Late 2008 unibody)
MacBook (Late 2008 unibody)

No amount of software fiddling will ever enable multitouch gestures for the older, plastic-bodied MacBooks. The hardware does not support them.

I have early 2008 Macbook Air as it was, I didn't upgrade the OS to the new Macbook Pro disks. I had 10.5.5. I installed the test package.

It appears I have a trackpad option in my preferences but it says "Could not load trackpad preference pane" The mouse option in my keyboard and mouse has gone.

The trackpad gestures are now gone.
I have attached what my system profiler shows.

Thanks

As I've said before, do not do this, everybody!

10.5.6 is very close and could potentially make this one very easy (without the issues).

So there's still a piece missing to the puzzle right now. Any sign of a missing piece?

Have you added the one I mentioned?
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MultitouchSupport.framework
With it, at least the 2 and 3 finger multitouch keeps working (though 4 finger gestures don't appear).

why this?
and how can i undo what i've done?

Because it has the new trackpad prefpane and probably all the necessary drivers. One would only have to edit the plist then.

You can undo what you've done by tracing back the steps you did. Since you didn't do it yourself and just installed some guy's package, you probably don't have backups of the original files. If you have a time machine backup use that. Otherwise, you have to re-install. (Not to sound mean, but there's a lesson there...)

I added that too. I added all 6 of the components:

/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBTopCase.kext
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBMultitouch.kext (with modified plist)
/System/Library/PreferencePanes/Keyboard.prefPane
/System/Library/PreferencePanes/Trackpad.prefPane
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MachineSettings.framework
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MultitouchSupport.framework

And I've considered adding:
/System/Library/Frameworks/SystemConfiguration.framework

But there is still no confirmation that even this much works at all. I'm shy of bundling all of my kexts and frameworks, but who knows what dependancies that may need. You may as well find a hacked installer at that point.

RE: Undoing this. You can always try re-running Apple's 10.5.5 Combo updater to see if it reinstalls your original files, or use Pacifist to get at them on your original install DVDs.

10.5.5 combo does not help, but thanks.
i'll get a new macbook 10.5.5 version tomorrow, hopefully it will work then.

/System/Library/PreferencePanes/Keyboard.prefPane
/System/Library/PreferencePanes/Trackpad.prefPane
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MachineSettings.framework
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MultitouchSupport.framework

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework, too.

I can confirm his will indeed become way easier with 10.5.6.

As usual, 10.5.6 will include all the specific system components for the latest Macs. So no installer hacking will be necessary.

It will then just be a question of messing with the plists in the kext, as explained by michaelb, which just requires Property List Editor (Apple) and Kext helper (http://www.cheetha.net/Kext_Helper/Software.html) to properly install the modified kext, with the correct permissions and a very strict minimum of safety.

I just modified the preference for my model of trackpad, which is very easy to check, (albeit in hexadecimal, and it appears as a decimal in Property List Editor), in Apple System Profiler.

Took me under 10 minutes (backup excluded ...) and works very well on my MBP 17 bought in June (not the latest, bought before any Apple announcement on 4 finger gestures) with the latest beta of 10.5.6.

And I love the 4 finger Exposé gesture!

how can you know this, where did you get 10.5.6?!
do you know when 10.5.6 is coming final?

thx

ok, thank you. then i'll just reinstall my ow macbook air os x version, wait for the update and then fiddle arround with the plist etc.

the last of an era

The Penryn pro was the last of an era. The PowerBook style mac portable is no more. The hybrid/ transition generation is now the only option ...makes me :D that I own the final revision to a classic.
The Multi-touch on this machine is already an amazing tool. I would much rather have developers utilize its capabilities of Swipe, Pinchy, 360 Scroll or even Dual-Click for that matter, before I would be worried about Apple giving me another finger.

Also, we all can activate expose with ONE finger, as well as sleep display, dashboard, screen saver, and desktop. all via expose and spaces pane. The only new trick is the application toggle... if you using a laptop are you not close enough to simply push Cmd+Tab, or use the dock LOL.
Ha, and there is also the Function buttons across the top of the laptop. Over Kill...

Just a mention.

Please don't murder me. I registered just now... I have read through the post just in case it was previously mentioned. But, just on a side note, there is an easier way to bypass the Media check for installing from the System CD's. Just boot off the orginal system and target mode the system you want to install the os on. Than just select it in the list of drives to install too. If this was mentioned I am sorry, just trying to help. I have been doing this for a while now to install iLife and OSX in one shot. :)
