I have a second generation MacBook Air, but the 4 finger gesture is missing, will it work on it.

I would think that you would be covered by your 1 year of AppleCare. Call AppleCare and get it fixed.

If that doesn't work, the newly released Firmware update should do hopefully something, check your Software Update.

I replaced the file with the modded one and it screwed up my system !! I had to reinstall the whole OS, the firmware fix for the trackpad released by Apple yesterday is only for the MacBook and the Pro so it doesn't work on the new Air !!

Please tell me you're kidding...

Did you READ this thread? There's much more work involved than replacing a single file.

Everybody should just wait for 10.5.6. I guarantee that one will actually make it that easy.

But this procedure is dangerous. Attempting this now is also a waste of effort. And nobody should encourage people to try. Seriously. 10.5.6 will be out very soon. Don't let anybody mess up their system over this. On a MBP, it can also make iTunes unusable!

Have you remember to fix the permission and user group access (chmod)?

If you did not, the kext could not be load on system reboot, and you could not use your trackpad for sure.;)

I did fix the permissions but I'll wait dont wanna screw any thing more !! LOL. Let's hope Apple fixes this issue soon and also if somebody can come out with a GUI verison.

Feel sorry for your case.

But what do you mean when you said 'it screw up your MBA'?

If you could not use keyboard & trackpad -> it is the symtom of AppleUSBMultitouch.kext could not be load due to incorrect permission.

And the modded kext could not be replace in system run normal 10.5.5 Leopard, it need the special 10.5.5 that came up with the Unibody.:D (because the kernel, some framework and a lot of kext have been changed, even the system version is still .5.5). Hope it clear now.

And as you can see: at least michaelb and someone who commented in my youtube video has succeed with their MBA..

Thanks for your concern, I have a 2 Generation MBA with the 4 finger swipe missing so I thought I could fix that, many people are facing this problem checkout the macbook air forums. I called Apple that they are clueless !! This is my second replacement and still this doesn't solve nay problems !!

I'm trying to see what the big deal is with all the people wanting 4-finger swiping on their previous generation MBs/MBPs...

I've got a MBP SR 2.2, and don't even have "gestures" but the 2-finger click for secondary/right click works fine, as well as 2-finger scrolling. I've got hot corners, so I set exposé for the lower-right corner (being right-handed this is the most natural way to swipe across the trackpad) and it's just a simple 'swipe' to exposé. Using 4 fingers to do basically the same thing just seems awkward... somehow. I've been doing it just to see what it feels like, and getting to exposé via lower right or left hot corner just seems so much easier. No need to aim, just swipe across in a diagonal motion with 1 finger. Viola... exposé. That's how I do my app switching too, usually. Spaces, widgets, screensaver... all with a simple 1-finger swipe to a desired corner (no looking needed really, it's kind of diagonal quadrants mentality.

So, I'm not really understanding the huge advantage of 4 fingers... it just feels more clumsy. Even 3 fingers would feel a bit more natural, but for me involving all the fingers, including the 'pinky' just feels more clumsy, or ham-fisted physically. But I haven't really used it, as I said, so what do I really know. It's just an impression.

Also, to me using the 2-finger then 'click' for right click is so easy on the classic trackpad, but I've been trying to imagine how that would translate to a trackpad with no button... Doesn't it then become a 3-finger click? Or do you just push the entire trackpad with 2 fingers until it clicks? In any case, it seems a bit more difficult, at least in my mind, since it was so natural already before they changed things.

Haha,

FYI, I'm still using a lovely Powerbook G4 - the last DDR gen.
And I'm quite satisfied with 2-finger scrolling, right click, :D

It still serve me well with my need for Internet surfing, IM, email, photo edit...

So why do I care about 4-finger?
1. I like to test the newest tech. I like to hack/mod a little bit...:apple:
(the reason for so late in making the modding method public is the Unibody Mac come so late in Asia.:( )
2. Multi-touch show us how Apple think about new getures. Those things will become handy if Apple release some kinds of Touch-book in near future!

For people have trouble with new MBA trackpad: let's move to the topic in MBA section.

Obviously he just replaced the file in his OS with the one you offered for download. That's why I said it's dangerous. You should really stop encouraging people and point out the risks more.

Wow, you write this big speech and you haven't even used it? That's not an impression, it's just an assumption... :)

How many times I have seen two-finger scrolling being described as weird and uncomfortable ... by people who haven't used it. Clearly, 4 finger gestures aren't for everyone, but they're quicker than the screen corners and they leave the cursor in the same place. I still have show-desktop and exposé in my corners, but I haven't used them since. And switching tabs in Firefox with three fingers is something I don't ever want to miss again.

And people should take responsibility for their own actions. Modifying system files should never be done lightly and if you don't know that then you shouldn't be modifying them.

Also you should do research to find out what happens if you modify these files and if you don't do this work first then i just say "tough". It's amazing what you remember when you learn things the hard way.

Lastly there was probably no reason to reinstall OSX from scratch. If he had backed up the original file (which he should have done or got from someone who had it) then he could have copied it back and fixed it.

Hey, you may choose to call it a speech, but I was basically expressing an impression from my perspective, and asking for someone to please give me an explanation of what all the fuss is about. By explaining my thinking or reasoning (thus... my "speech") I felt it would give whoever responded an insight into my thinking, so they could better explain to me why they preferred 4-finger swiping, etc. No need to be a wiseass...;)

BTW: 3-finger (swiping? L/R) actually would be something I could see liking a lot - I just played around with what it would feel like, and that one feels right. It's the 4-finger thing that still feels strange. I guess you're right, and I really have to use it first, but I already know that.. <ahem...>

How about a few more examples from real life from you. What do you like the most, how does it work for a power user, etc. That's helpful stuff... better than eyerolls.

I apologize if my  sounded to serious. :)
I just think it's a silly question, like asking for examples when one might type ⌘R instead of pressing the reload button... You just do what feels right.

I remember the time when my current PB was released with 2-finger scrolling. People had find out that the previous gen PB also is 2-finger scrolling capable but ... Apple never release any 'enabler' or update. And anyone remember about iBook?

So I public the hack/mod method to ensure that they will include those things in the next update. :D

I think apple finally released support for 2-finger scrolling for the older 'Books when Tiger came out.

Feel sorry to turn you down,... but maybe that would be the same feeling of people with old PB when Tiger release...

Actually I have owned an 1.0GHz PB (the famous FireWire 800) before and :(

I have to use FFS to make it 2-finger scroll-able and tweak it to use side scrolling :D

Hi michaelb,

I tried to edit "OSInstall.mpkg" by following suneohair's instruction. But it still "Mac OS X cannot be installed"
Can anyone send me the edited "OSInstall.mpkg" to me?

thanks a million.
