Sort of funny the article starts out saying "Apple is close to launching its next-generation iPad mini" then ends with dates all over the place -- 2027 first, then late 2026 and lastly maybe sometime in 2026. In other words, they don't have a clue.

Maybe it's just me, but 2027 isn't close.
They’ve been speculating of a new release for years. I know this is a rumors site and all but they throw out different dates all the time. If you say enough dates one is bound to be correct, right?

We need a dart board with dates on it. Every morning a new dart is thrown at the board. What ever it hits is the new ship date? Probably just as accurate as the chief rumor mongers on the forums.

The primary hardware upgrade I'm hoping for is more RAM. Too bad about the memory supply issues.

Too often for my use cases, background Safari tabs get killed off losing their state. Background apps often enough get killed off and many of them also lose their last state.

It'd be great if Apple can also implement virtual memory like on desktop OS's so apps can save their state onto disk. I've heard the iPad Pro has virtual memory but I'm not sure if behaves the same as desktop OS implementations.

What Apple needs to do is put polarized glasses on their design engineers, take them outside - what a concept - in the sunlight, and have them use their devices (iPads, Laptops) that, because of their portable nature, have a high probability of being used outdoors. Maybe then they will come up with a design that allows the user to see the screen content in the sunlight.

The positioning is that it costs only a quarter of the foldable. Or if they increase the price, still less than a third.
Good point.

I was thinking in terms of most people buying their phones on a subsidized plan but maybe that isn't the case anymore.

The iPad Mini 8 could be launched alongside with the 20th anniversary iPhone this year. That would be 2 great products to start John Ternus' era

People still care about how much they spend, even on plans. (Which I won’t call “subsidized” because it’s not clear to me they really are.)

An iPad mini is also something which you can let younger children handle. An expensive foldable not so much.

I wished it got thinner and had better speakers. Otherwise I am very happy with the current iteration.

iPad mini should have M series cpu, its NOT imho just a cheep iPad, for the 10" you have cheep and expensive iPads, some people have the mini because they want small but want a pro mini with lots of memory lots of cpu

It should get the latest A Pro chip, which will have optimal performance in the Mini. If they put say the M4/M5 it would thermal throttle so badly that it would probably perform worse than the A19/20 Pro, let alone hammer the battery capacity.

I got a Pro last year almost solely for the better display. The minute they release the mini with OLED I'm buying one and selling my M4 Pro, the thing is a battery hog too.

I wish they'd launched something before the RAM crisis had begun.

Now I'm not optimistic at all, as the iPad Mini is a constantly RAM starved device and that's not likely to be improved if they are releasing in these market conditions.

I am not seeing any new information here that hasn't already been posted in previous MR articles. I might be interested in purchasing, depending on price and features.
I was looking through the article to find the latest rumour that was mentioned and it doesn't seem to exist 🤷‍♂️

Does anyone know if the switch to OLED that’s not LTPO will still allow the mini to but turned sideways and go into standby mode like on the iPhone Pro? I want to use this new mini as a bedside clock when not in use but not if the screen stays fully on

Apple is said to have designed a new vibration-based speaker system that eliminates the need for traditional speaker holes. By using sound-emitting surfaces instead of open grilles, the company can reduce potential entry points for water and dust, resulting in a more sealed, durable enclosure.
It'll be interesting to see whether the display will be the vibrating acoustic surface, or parts of the housing, or both. The display might make more sense for mid and high frequencies, and the housing might be best for lower/bass frequencies. It's doubtful that the housing will be the sole acoustic surface, since people who put their iPad into a case, or use it on a Magic Keyboard or third-party equivalent, would experience a degradation in audio quality, and because holding a vibrating housing might be annoying, and also result in variable audio quality.

Using the display as the main speakers would also allow better stereo separation. OLED displays are better suited than LCDs for being used as acoustic surfaces, since they're thinner and more flexible.
