Apple's upcoming iPad Pro models with OLED displays will be followed by sequential OLED MacBook Pro and OLED MacBook Air launches over the next three years, according to analyst Jeff Pu from Haitong International Technology Research.

In a new investor memo seen by MacRumors, Pu said Apple intends to update the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with OLED screens sometime in 2026, which tallies with the timeframe previously predicted by Ross Young of research firm Display Supply Chain Consultants.

Pu also reiterated widely rumored next-generation 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models launching in 2024 that will also be equipped with OLED displays, with Apple aiming to ship 10 million units in the first year.

There are currently no Macs or iPads with OLED displays. Compared to current iPad Pro and MacBook Pro models with LCD-based mini-LED screens, benefits of OLED technology would include increased brightness, higher contrast ratio with deeper blacks, improved power efficiency for longer battery life, and more.

Pu also said that Apple is actively developing an OLED screen for the MacBook Air, although the release of the OLED MacBook Pro is expected to come first. Previous reports have suggested that Samsung Display is developing a 13.3-inch OLED panel for a future MacBook Air model amid Apple's plans to switch several of its product lines to the display technology.

My M1 MBP has already got an amazing display, and they're saying something better is coming even for MacBook Air, too, in like 5 years or so? Astonishing if true. Oh, and while you're at it, could you please make Studio Display better, like 120Hz support, making brighter, more contrast, etc.? For someone who uses an external display, it's the stand-alone big screen boy that matters the most, not the display that comes with a laptop.

Is this true? I thought Mini LED beats OLED in brightness for large screens.

It does, but the dramatic increase in contrast and color vibrance is worth the trade off. The tech that offers the best of both is microLED, which we think might debut on Apple Watch Ultra. Interesting to see how the watch is an incubator for new ideas / manufacturing methods.

Hear me out. What if Apple made an e-ink iPad made specifically for news+. E-ink corp supplies Amazon, kobo etc. Apple’s display could achieve true white and black without needing a backlight or flicker. Would also align with carbon neutral and help them reenter education in a profound way.

OLED won't result in increase brightness, it will result in reduced brightness... but better contrast and dynamic range, and pixel perfect blacks (although the mini led implementation in the current MacBook Pros is very good). Longer battery life will also depend on what is being displayed on the screen, if you're displaying bright images with not a lot of black then the power draw is quite large.

I have an Alienware OLED monitor and it's awesome... I've had it about 4 months, and no burn in yet, however it asks to perform a maintanance activity every 4 hours of usage which is a bit of a pain.

It would be terrible. LTT reviewed an e-ink color monitor. It was bad, in particular due to how the e-ink particles remain until there is a clear/wipe. iPad using e-ink, no good.

I did watch that review and agree that product is wack. Also think trying to do motion or general computing on e-ink is a bad idea. Ironically I see that as an asset as it prevents the user from doomscrolling / getting distracted. At any rate, OLED should help a lot.

Fantasized about something similar that would be bigger than my Kindle PW but smaller than a Remarkable, allow for jotting/drawing, and more of a news/books/print consumption machine. I know they exist out there already.

To @Velin 's point, I don't think the e-ink tech is there yet (at least for color) and knowing Apple, it would be very cost prohibitive. For me at least.

It'd have to be something outside of an iPad though as there is no way I'm going to try and play Dead Cells on e-Ink.

I just want an OLED iPad Mini.
Me too. The iPad Mini 6 format is perfect. If apple wont give us an foldable iPhone pro that opens into an iPad mini, then the next best thing they could do is give us an iPad Mini Pro with a OLED screen, 120HZ refresh rate and even a dynamic island with faceID. Id pay 1000 dollars for such a device.

As far as i am concerned, they should put OLED in everything ASAP. Oled tech is vastly superior to anything else on the market. It has the best contrast, best color, best vibrancy, you dont have that halo blooming you get like on the Ipad 12.9 (which was the soul reason why i did not go with the 12.9 this past generation).

Apple is so inconsistant with the tech they put in their product lineup. Hands down, the best screen apple makes, is the Iphone 15 pro and pro max screens, BECAUSE THEY ARE OLED.

Everything else, while damn good, still is weak in comparsion. Outside of the $6000 Pro XDR Display, i dont think any of their screens can handle HDR content at all and even that screen suffers from the blooming halo effect with white images on black backrounds like a star field. Unexceptable for a 6000 dollar monitor. (plus no built in webcam, speakers (I think?) or even includes a stand...all at 60Hz? Common...

The Apple Studio Display is a beautiful screen, but its still LCD, 60Hz, with no HDR and only 600 Nits, all for 1599? Are you kidding me? 999 or 1199 would be perfect, but for that price, you could get a decent OLED Monitor for cheeper! (Might not do 5K but most monitors dont do that anyway)

Dont even get me started on the laptop screens. While the best LCD Screens out there yes, that god awful notch in them WITHOUT FACEID (I still have no idea why) just ruin what could have been a great monitor. Yes you get used to it after a while, but it still sticks out like a sore thumb and now with the dynamic island which is a much better compromise in terms of looks and functionality, it feels dated.

Put OLED in everything ASAP! Yes i get it can burn in, but i never had an issue with it on any of my Iphones and i use them the most!

Its just so inconsistant going from this beautiful bright OLED screen on my iphone with 120HZ and HDR Support, to these LCD Screens which do feel backwards, its a shame the best screen i own is my Iphone! Common!

Right. What I had in mind was basically a Kindle scribe that had a better display and tighter integration with news+ and books. Maybe good on-device text to speech, but no apps or anything. Probably makes more sense to release news+ on e-ink platforms similar to how tv+ is on Vizio/android etc.

E-ink black is more like dark grey.

I’ve been dreaming about a black and white e-ink iPad for years. Can you imagine the battery life possibilities? And reading text is so superior with these screens - like most of my internet time in general, most of my iPad time is reading text. A cheaper, black and white iPad would be great for lots of my uses. Depending on the price, I’d buy it.
