I think you are taking the car analogy a bit too far. My example was only to demonstrate how companies squeeze in a new product or package to their lineup without disturbing the products on either side of the new one.

But the dual camera has only been in iPhones since last year, so even with your example, there literally has been no time for it to trickle down. But also it may not be technically practical which is why Apple only added it only to the plus. We don't know why the 7 didn't get it. But the plus is, of course, a bigger phone than the 4.7" 7, with a bigger battery and able to take in an additional camera. Again, with your analogy, there are features on, say the BMW 7 and 5 that NEVER make it down stream. For example, ventilated, air conditioned seats have never been offered on it's lower car lines (4,3,2,1). So your point really fails. Sometimes the flagship is the flagship and key features never filter down.
Thing is I think the iPhone is a premium phone at a premium price and should have premium features. There should be no trickling down of features that should be in the phone given the cost

No I wouldn't be pissed off; I wouldn't buy it. Apple isn't under any obligation to appease me. They put out a product, me, you, and everyone else has the choice to buy it or not. Seems pretty simple to me.
You can cry "I want" all day long, it doesn't matter or change anything.
I guess we will just have to wait and see what we get with the split in models.

The new features that'll be on the 8 or "x" edition that won't be on the 7S. The + models generally are the higher tier models and most likely won't have oled, the better camera according to rumors and people here.

However they are rumors.. so we'll see the 12th.

Is it THAT hard of a mental jump for you to understand the iPhone flagship will just have a different name? The iPhone 7s will have a LOWER price than the iPhone 8/S/Edition/Whatever. The iPhone 7 won't be the flagship but it also won't have the top end price either. As a result it won't get ALL of the features of the flagship but it also won't lose features its predecessor has. So the iPhone 7s will have the same value proposition as in the past. It's not a half gallon tube of ice cream being repackaged into a 50 fl oz tub. It will get some new features as always, but others will be reserved for the flagship.

This is the same kind of model lineup that just about every consumer product company pushes out from cars to tvs to dishwashers to sports jerseys.

Hopefully Apple understands there are people like you that have a hard time understanding the iPhone 7s won't be the flagship anymore and renames it plain old "iPhone." Then people don't have to cry that Apple is ripping people off with the 7s by charging the same price it always did and adding a few new features but not every feature of the step-up model that runs $200 more.

Be nice.

There are precious few features that other manufacturers aren't already putting in sub-$1000 "flagship" phones, that Apple can hold back and save for 8/Edition/Pro/Whatever. There's Apple Pencil support (maybe only practical for a plus size), and the carefully calibrated and expanded color space like the iPad Pro. I can't think of many other things, though, where Apple isn't demonstrably behind.

They have the best app ecosystem and the fastest mobile processor family in the market. Those fundamentals make up for many, many sins, but not all of them and not forever. I understand that the 7S/7S+ won't be the "flagship", and indeed I could probably step into the X/Pro/Edition/Etc—but WHY would I WANT to? The fact is, the 7S/7S+ will need to have waterproofing, expanded resolution, wireless charging, and fast charging just to keep parity with the Samsung Galaxy S series. True, the Note series could be seen as the "premium/X/edition" version of Samsung phones; that device includes a free SPen (aka Bizarro Apple Pencil). In addition, reviewers online have panned the Note 8, and don't expect it to do as well, because except for SPen there isn't much to differentiate it from the (cheaper) S8.

Look, I paid extra to have an iPad Pro, and I absolutely understand the differences involved in introducing a higher-tier—the 7S/+ is like buying "top shelf" pot at the dispensary, and the X/Pro/Edition/Nimbus will be "private reserve." Some of us aren't really loyal to Apple, though, and are just really big techno pot heads—if Samsung's "top shelf" is as good as Apple's "private reserve", why would anyone want Apple's best of best? Beyond the die hard fans, that is.

I personally would want it if it had an improved camera.. and I'm die hard fan of oled. They're beautiful displays. Pencil support would be amazing in it (as I'm very into digital art) -- but that would only drive up the costs more. I'm paying in payments and would be upgrading every year, so 41 compared to 45-46 a month isn't that big of a deal to me if I opted for the X edition. We have no idea what's coming yet, or what these are going to be even priced at or the actual availability, but we know the 8 itself will be low. Let's just hope they keep the "7S" whatever they decide to call it -- is appealing enough and has enough of a reason to upgrade -- so everyone can get their hands on it if the 8 is in too heavy of a demand to snag.

I personally will be waiting for the 8 as it sounds like a pretty cool upgrade.

I'm a spoilt house husband—isn't that a core Apple demographic? :p My husband's phone is now the Galaxy S8+, and we have the budget to get me something equally nice; I'm not due for a new phone until Spring, though, so all these "OMG will it ship in time" posts are amusing (not that I've too much room to talk about techno-fever).

I'm still waiting for more news of an iPhone SE2, as once I stepped into the Apple ecosystem I became a believer in the ancient Apple dogma that my phone shouldn't be the largest thing in my pants; I like the smaller size. I also like a baller phone, though, and if the iPhone Platinum Champagne Room Edition is baller enough, I'll be getting it. I just hope they have it in piano black by Spring. :p

Why? That's like a 2 month interim...

Yeah I doubt you will be jumping to the Note 8 bud. Everyone talks like this until the event is actually shown, then are complaining about how Fedex hasn't updated your tracking for your new iPhone...
You speak for no one. I said the same thing last year and purchased an S7 Edge after being with Apple since the iPhone 4 (my first smartphone).

What's in a name? We don't really know what "pro" is supposed to mean—it kind of makes sense in the current iPad lineup, but what is a "pro" phone? The upcoming LG V30 looks like it serves one of the core premium Apple markets, prosumer/mobile media (https://www.engadget.com/2017/09/08/lg-v30-youtube-vlogging/). LG has a clear vision, and it comes in at $700-800. So, iPhone 7S territory. Or Samsung S8 territory. Take your pick.

I think the naming problem is more than just stray confusion, and it's more than the notion that some consumers are too dim to "get" the new pricing structure; it's almost an existential question for Apple—if you already position yourself as premium, how much granularity is actually appropriate? If more people can afford to upgrade into an iPhone than could afford, say, upgrading to a Lexus, do you really need to create a new ultra-premium tier? And if you do, fine, but again, how do you justify that to non-premium iPhone consumers and their Android-flagship-owning friends and family? Because feature discrepancies become more glaring with each generation/iteration.

Perhaps pause for a bit before pressing post when you are insulting people. Everyone including you is entitled to their opinion but it is just that, an opinion.

Rumors have it that it is not as you say. The 8 will be more expensive $1000 and the 7s will cost just as much as it does today for the 7.

But to have an 8 they have to give it something the 7s was going to have like an oled screen for instance to differentiate it.

what is a "pro" phone?
Dictionary definition of pro phone: A means for Apple to extract more money than they should. :D

$200 can go a long way toward other things. Like AirPods for example.

What’s the point of Chinese slave labor if you can’t meet launch dates.

Yeah

$200 may be "measly" for you (and the jump would be more than $200) but it puts it into a price bracket where I think enough is enough and it's no longer worth it to me. I begrudged paying over £600 for my current iPhone 6 so you can imagine how I'd feel if I had to stump up a grand for the next one.

I still get the 7S. :p
I still think £1000 would be expensive for a phone, I wouldn't pay £900 either.

That's why I said "if". :p

200 is 200. I'm not rich at all. But if ur an iPhone/Apple fan this year is pretty exciting as far as the phone goes. If ur planning on upgrading anyway, and the only thing stopping u from getting the 8 is ~$200 and ur gonna settle for the 7S I think ur gonna regret it. If u did the Apple upgrade plan the difference in cost between the 7 & 8 would be about $8/mo. The 8 looks like it's gonna be a awesome phone. Me personally, I'm not even considering the 7S. It doesn't interest me at all.

LOL Its hard to impress me with preorders when Apple will sell more iPhones in 5 minutes then Samsung will sell the rest of the year.
The only reason is because Apple is the only iOS manufacturer. Samsung is one of many Android manufacturers. Android still has more users than iOS.

I'm hoping the 7S will cost no more than the 7 currently does, which means it starts at £599 in the UK ($649 in the US). If the 8 starts at $999, it's not a "measly $200" more expensive.

It is on a yearly trade in plan!

Why do you keep repeating the $200 figure?

Nobody knows what the pricing of the new phone is going to be. There rumours suggest in the region of $1000 so if you assume a price of $999 for the base model that is $350 difference from price of the iPhone 7 base model.

The fact that its particularly exciting is very much a matter of opinion aswell. So far we've got..

OLED screens - not really new on a smartphone is it?

Smaller bezel/better screen body ratio - again, its been seen on several phones already in the last couple of years. Not sure why its taken Apple so long to catch up in this regard. Seems like a case of Apple witholding features in order to sell an upgrade down the line. A bit like the 4k/HDR Apple TV.

Wireless charging/ fast charging - Again, its been available elsewhere for years and the wireless charging solution will almost certainly require the purchase of a wireless charging pad, its also rumoured to be included on the 7s/7s Plus models.

Facial unlock and animated Emojis - The facial unlock tech is interesting and will likely be implemented better than Samsung did but it seems like it replaces Touch ID which some people might not want.

I can completely understand why some people would think it just isn't worth it.

For me, all those features are new because I only use iPhones. Since 07. And all those features that have been elsewhere for years will most likely be better on the iPhone. And I agree the hardware on competitor phones has gotten tremendously better over the past few years. But for me the iPhone always feels just a little more premium. And I'm not a fan of the current facial recognition technology I've seen. But for Apple to ditch Touch ID (which works flawlessly) for facial recognition i guarentee that it's gonna be bad a$$. And leaps and bounds better then anything currently available.

What do you mean? All those techs by other corporations were poorly implemented or half-baked junks, and Apple will show them how they are "done right" or reinvented anew.
