this new coating is def. great at resisting fingerprints...but it collects dust and lint like a magnet compared to my 2g.

I wonder if Apple's motivation for this new screen coating was to keep their display models looking pristine? Ever use a 3G at an Apple store? If you have then you know what I mean.

Thought it would be a small gimmicky thing. It isn't. And I absolutely love the feel of this glass too.

Boy it's sexy. No, I am not kidding. :p

I totally agree... :) I purchased a gun metal INCASE case for my baby... it's gorgeous now!! :) I was apprehensive about purchasing the gun metal.. but damn.. it's sweet.

It has been great and it’s been a noticeable improvement from the iPhone 3G. I kept my 3G naked and I’ve been able to keep this one super clean just by wiping the screen with my shirt or pants.

After 2 years.. with my 2G "naked", and having my phone flop around with keys and coins etc... only the slightest scratch has occurred on my (recently retired) phone, and this was because I've dropped the damn thing on pavement from about 5' about 20 times - STILL works PERFECTLY. It's not even noticeable unless your looking for it (which we all know... iPhone users are all OCD about this). The damn thing has had flour in it (restaurant) and gook every where. (I clean it all out) And the screen still looks pristine. These phones are amazingly durable.

The new screen has a slightly sticky feel to it.. which I LOVE.. must be because the oil isn't at the surface any more. It's sweet. After a few days of using it, I am not getting any "dead" spots in parts where there usually is a build up of oil. Most notably the swiping of the unlock button.

I have NOT owned an iPhone before the 3G S. I have used 3G and even the 2G models, but not extensively. After having the iPhone since Friday afternoon, I don't see how this is such a great "improvement" or even that "great" to begin with.

I'll justify my statements because, I for one, can't stand people making criticisms about something with explaining why other than "it sucks." I know the screen is glass, and this time around, the oleophobic layer was an improvement, but I find myself with tons of smudges and streaks every time I use it. I also find that my finger will catch the glass a lot and its not very "smooth." After adding a switcheasy screen shield, the screen feels "smoother" than the actual glass and my finger does not catch the screen as much. Its too bad apple did not do some research comparing the oelophobic layer, the 3g/2g glass and commonly used screen shields to figure out a better layer that could have been applied to the screen. Even better, including a shield that would be as good as other shields.

yes....diamonds fall under the "harder than glass" category i believe ;)

LOL.. and really.. who has random diamonds floating around in their pocket?? LOL .. If your one of those people.. can you spare a few?? :)

I need a science lesson, however, as I am AWARE that glass is made from sand... how is sand more "scratchable" than say a key? I understand it's a finer grain.. yet there is less pressure put on the glass by the sand than say a key or coins.. sand by itself won't scratch the screen.... will it?

Well.. the reason it isn't "smooth" is because of the coating. The coating "removes" the oil.. which creates the smoothness. BY removing the oil I mean it reduces it's effect on the screen. (it doesn't actually REMOVE the oil). To me the screen feels sticky as well... <but I like that over the oily smoothness> I have found that the coating does not eliminate the smudges.. at all. It reduces their effect on screen interference.. (meaning if you forget to wipe the phone clean.. you won't experience as many dead spots). Plus it is easier to remove the smudges with a simple t-shirt cleaning.

If you've used the previous 2 phones extensively.. you would notice the irritating effect of having to swipe twice - some times 3-4 times to get something to work, because of the oil on the phone. I haven't had this problem "YET" on the 3GS.. but.. it's only been 4 days.. so I'll have to test it further to let you know.
