That's speculation. Companies are judged on what they do, not assumptions that every other company is just as bad.

So is the claim that Samsung made that request.

Can you cite a single example?

Didn't think so.

What about all the tech blogs and news outlets who have been "banned for life" from Apple press conferences because they wrote a non-favorable article about Apple?

To be fair, I don't think Apple would've needed to do the same, did you see the opening ceremonies of the London Olympics a couple of years ago? Samsung sure did. :)

Ugh, just the idea that London 2012 was actually a couple of years ago makes me sad.

Sorry but no

Apple would have done the same. Let's at least TRY to be fair.

Sorry but no, apple would not have done the same. If u want an apple product, u pay for it, thats how valuable their products are, and thats why i like them.

In rare charity and educational cases this is totally accepted. But giving them out at olympic games or any other event wouldn't be the advertising "style" of apple ;)

So just a desperate attempt by Samsung to force their name out there.

Like other sponsors are desperate to put their logo on football shirts, trains Busses and what not. Its called marketing. You can see 100s of celebs with logos covered on baseball caps, laptops and whatnot.

I don't many athletes are fanboys and even if .. A free Note 3 for covering up my iPhone, Crapberry or Nokia ? I would cover more than that for a freebie like that.

If Apple would have done it, fanboys here would have called it clever marketing / innovation and not desperate :)

and they would of patent it thinking they came up with the concept

It is possible that Samsung requested that logos be covered
Well duh. That's what the previous article MacRumors wrote said.

Olympic athletes are being asked by Samsung to cover any Apple logos on their devices during the Parade of Nations at the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony because Samsung is a lead worldwide sponsor of the Games.

Please read your previous articles and not repeat the same thing.

When was it confirmed that Samsung requested this?

This was my question. I haven't seen anything to give credence to the assertion.

/going on rant

MR is one of my favorite sites but the thread yesterday seemed a bit irresponsible. Granted it was a rumor and MR posts rumors. I sort of doubt the turd storm would have been as great as it was if the Original title of the thread was less inflammatory. I may not recall exactly but the first post said something like "Samsung requests ban on iPhone...". In the body of the post it went on to explain covering the logo. Covering a logo is not a ban. Going back through that thread it was pretty obvious most of the people had not even taken the time to read the article. Later the title changed to better reflect the true rumor. I doubt there was intent, but the result was the same.

It's the same with today's thread:

"It is possible that Samsung requested that logos be covered, but it is not an official IOC request and athletes will not be penalized for using or displaying non-Samsung phones." Says who?

I care much less about Samsung's alleged request than I do about MR quality. Unless I get booted, I will continue to come to this site. 99% of the time MR is much better than this. If it turns out to be true that's one thing. But this is like lobbing a grenade... again.

/rant over

Come on

they are suing samsung because apple think they invented spell check

And Samsung is suing Apple because it thinks it invented speech recording. Doesn't sound "10x more whiney" to me. Next?

What about all the tech blogs and news outlets who have been "banned for life" from Apple press conferences because they wrote a non-favorable article about Apple?

Like whom? Gizmodo, who was banned after they ran a story using stolen Apple pre-release products? That same Gizmodo who was quoted in the October event? Not so much.

Thanks. That might possibly be the answer to my question if it was an official request by the IOC or some very individual interpretation of "Rule 40" by Samsung themselves...

Anyway, lots of funny "if apple would have..." comments... I prefer to stick with "this is what is happening...".

There is still nothing that says samsung actually made any request. So let's deal with THOSE facts.

Nothing - except for the Swiss article that directly says that "Samsung doesn't want to see competitor devices during the opening ceremony. Anyone who wants to participate in the ceremony will need to hide logos/branding with stickers". The second sentence could be interpreted as a conclusion / solution suggested by the author of the article, but the first sentence clearly states that it is Samsung making the request.

Why let facts get in the way of a good story right?

I'm actually very surprised Samsung and the OIC didn't decide this. Especially with the millions invested by Samsung, if I were them, I would've demanded something similar.

It happened in London too!

That statement from the IOC seems to contradict a report from a friend of mine who is an Olympian and also happens to be Swiss. In that statement the IOC claims that athletes are free to use any device just as in past Olympics, but he said they made the same request to cover logos before the London Olympics in 2012. See his reply to my tweet about the article yesterday here:

"dude, they asked me to put duct tape on my phone in London already. It's ridiculous. Lots of athletes simply ignored it". - Dominik Meichtry (@SwissDom) https://twitter.com/SwissDom/statuses/431190381519065088
