There is no Olympic rule that prohibits the use of phones or cameras during the national parade, right ? So they can use THEIR OWN DEVICES.

Read the macrumors summary of the article and you will learn there is such a rule and it is named rule 40.

I find it funny a lot of the people upset about this rule are also so sure in other threads that iOS devices with 1gb of ram is fine and mobile safari never crashes, never reloads tabs and is snappier with ever new iOS beta release.

I seriously don't know why when it comes to Apple products, everyone knows what components are used in them. The truth of the matter is, they are Apple products, regardless of the components used in them, and you guys (am looking at you AppleScruff1) know it very well, but you try to spin it your way for years now.

In other words you guys are saying that Leonardo Da Vinci should not be fully credited for his Mona Lisa masterpiece because he most likely used brushes and paints he did not made himself!

Get real you guys.

Right, they are Apple products. The post I replied to stated that he wouldn't have anything to do with Samsung, to the point of not watching the Olympics. Apple products contain Samsung produced parts. And you don't see the hypocrisy there? So please explain what way I am trying to spin it. In simple terms, said user hates Samsung, but it's ok if they produce parts for Apple.

Who cares. Sammy is already spending a **** ton of money sponsoring the Olympics. They can dictate whatever they want.

Isn't McD a huge sponsor also? Imagine how they'd feel is people were walking about with Wendys bags.

It's IOC's own rule. Samsung didn't create the rule. They are simply asking IOC to ensure it's upheld. And since that rule exists - it's perfectly within their right.

Anyone with a problem needs to take it up with IOC.

This is nothing new. Companies and the IOC go to great lengths to "protect" the companies investments in advertising to prevent others from showcasing their products. Companies often try to buy space for adds "honoring the athletes" so they can get their brand out without paying the IOC.

Oddly enough, the iPhone shape and interface is easily recognized so people will know what it is even without an Apple logo.

i kinda thought sponsorship was having your advertisements o TV during the games, or buying uniforms. or buying equipment for a certain sport. but this seems to be a little much. some of the athletes life needs to be their life. so if they do a casual interview and are wearing a reebok jacket they can be kicked out of the games if nike is the uniform sponsor??? seems like these mostly amateur athletes are owned by clothing and equipment companies. shame.

Did you read the article? This is about the opening parade. One event. ONE.

...If banning Pepsi cans because Coca-cola was a sponsor or forbidding local, independent restaurants from serving fries because McDonalds was a sponsor didn't put a dent in their reputation this certainly wont. Btw, the IOC's reputation is pretty dented as it is.

You're absolutely right. Another dent.

How many dents can it take?

They should just stop athletes filming stuff during the opening ceremony full stop, no matter what device they are using.

It always looks daft when you see people participating in a major event like this and loads of them are experiencing it through the screen on their phone or even worse tablet.

I have been to concerts and seen people watch the whole thing through their iPad screen whilst they were recording it, same for weddings and other significant events, watch any crowd these days at such events and half of them will have phones or tablets in front of their faces.

Majority of the footage taken will probably never make it off the device and they are spoiling their own experience of the event by experiencing it in this way.

I photograph weddings professionally and I look back at some of the entrance of the brides photos (a big event for most brides) in recent years and they just make me feel sad ... I have photographs where it looks like half the congregation are obscured with phones and tablets, in some cases even key people like the mother of the bride.

Phones are great for filing short clips of stuff where there is no professional coverage taking place but for some events you really should just keep your phone in your pocket and experience it to the full.

I'm with Samsung on this..somewhat.

No one should blatantly promote another brand that competes with a sponsor, Samsung or not.

However, as an athlete, if I answer my iPhone and the TV network pans across and sees me talking on it, that should not disqualify/financially penalize me.

Now if I'm being interviewed, I would not say, "I love my iPhone" as that doesn't relate to the game at all.

Hope that makes sense.

I still think a small quiz based on the article (and maybe even the source) should be required to comment

And yet he got an upvote?

Just curious if you read the article or if you're just making a general comment. Rule 40 and the article is about the parade - not any other aspect of the games, interviews, etc.

You're right, instead of just being vocal the people in thread would screaming in outrage against Apple. I don't know why you would think people would support Apple doing this? Every time Apple does something slightly in a negative manner people on MR are just begging to blast Apple so maybe it's you that needs to come to reality rather than calling people Fanboys. It's really too bad that MR has taken away the vote down button. Why oh Why?

I speak from experience reading these forums over the past 11 years. Try it for yourself. Find a thread, say, about Apple suing someone. "Go Apple! Take them down! Kill the enemy! raaaawrrrr!" Then find one about someone sueing Apple. "Bully! Unfair! Such a stupid, petty, lawsuit! Leave Apple alone!"

You're right, not everyone does this, but there are enough people who seem to blindly advocate Apple in any situation and dump on any non-Apple company that I don't think I'm exaggerating at all.

Yes we miss some of the well known Samsung/Google defenders of the forum :D

I don't like Samsung phones and yes I do like Android but I also like using iOS and my current device is an iPhone 5S (See my blog for proof) but I did not post here to defend Samsung or to attack Apple. I posted here to call out the ignorance of many people here and their hate/love for a corporation.

This is utter crap. I've already decided to never buy a Samsung product. Now I can't watch the Olympics. No Samsung, there is this thing called freedom and you can just pound your "rules" up your arse.

Overreaction of the year. Seriously, I don't get the big deal. Ignore the Samsung logos and enjoy the Olympics. It isn't hard. Do you boycott TV stations because they advertise the wrong products for you?

0/10.

I gave up being interested in the Olympics pretty much since Sydney and certainly since Beijing when China used it as a tool for state and military propaganda. Their opening ceremony was reminiscent of the Nazi Games of Berlin in 1936. The IOC is now a joke.

And the Winter version is pretty ridiculous. It's just full of fairly pointless events like sliding down an artificially built tube in a heavy coffin on skates, doing silly flips in the air on skis and skiing off massive jumps for no good reason. Unlike purer sports like running, athletics and swimming, most of the winter sports are only "played" by rich white people that can afford to travel and live in ski resorts learning their silly games.

That Rule 80 doesn't stand up to logic or reasoning. There were many successful Games long before the world became so corporatised.

If Samsung were to walk up to me and hand me a $650 phone for the low, low price of nothing, with the only catch being that I have to use it in lieu of my normal phone during the 2-3 hours of the opening ceremony, would I take it?

Hell yeah, I'd take it. Comeon. Free phone.

yeah but you also get hotpockets, not all of us get that sweet of deal

Guess what, if you did that the IOC would tell you that you're not welcome to compete in their games. That's how it works.

And if a large number of athletes did that, would there be any games?

To be perfectly clear: Laws should always be observed. Rules are up for negotiation. Don't confuse the two.
