iPhone XS OMG the camera! (Share your iPhone Xs Images)

This is good... but for the 8+ shot, you should turn HDR on and retake since the Xs already has HDR on. Shooting a comparison shot without HDR is not a good test. Also I think the 8+ camera lens has a fingerprint or oil on the glass and this is why it is hazy with low contrast

The top image was taken with my 8 Plus and the bottom taken with my Max. Three things to note.
First, the Max focused immediately to produce the bottom photo without me needing to tap in the right place for exposure.
Second, If I tapped on the window in the top photo taken with the Plus, the blinds wouldn’t be washed out but the rest of the photo would be extremely dark.
Third, because of the previous issue, I tapped to focus on the the dog in the chair in each photo prior to taking (to make the comparison legit).

The types of situations are where I really see the camera on the Max shine.

I took all of that into conideration prior to the shot. Both lenses were wiped completely. 8 Plus is set to auto HDR. I’m not intentionally trying to skew results. This can be recreated over and over.

Same situation as I previously posted and the same parameters. Both lenses wiped prior to taking. Both using HDR. No other settings tweaked. Took the best photo possible under both exposure situations. I gain nothing by trying to make one look better than the other. This is simply what I’m noticing.

These comparisons (and the OP's in post#6) look exactly like the difference between HDR and non-HDR. The 8+ pics just look like HDR isn't doing anything.

What do you see on the 8+ with camera setting on "keep normal photo"......is HDR doing anything.

Maybe a significant difference between the 8+ and Max is that HDR kicks in more readily.

People get hellbent on “But is it a Pixel 2?”. The reality is those pics are both SIGNIFICANTLY better than the 8+, in an environment where smartphone cameras tend to struggle.

This is the biggest jump in camera quality we’ve seen on an iPhone in quite a while. Each year things get better and better. We should be thanking Google for implementing a special HDR system for smartphones, as it pushed Apple to follow a similar implementation.

Gotta love good ol’ competition.

iphone xs/xs max , pick your flavor. the camera is amazing

noticable improvement over my iPhone 8 Plus [and is also better than the X]

these were the iphones ive been waiting for personally. loved my XS max, well worth 2049aud. i am on it pretty much almost everyday so it's kinda doable [even thouigh australia got 50-70aud extra price jack ups despite same currency exchange rate]

I think you nailed it. In those situations I cannot get HDR to kick in on the Plus. In better lit situations it will. But not as seen in my picture whereas the MAX does every time.

The camera is better over the X, but just slightly. I use the ProCamera app and can still get better results with that app than the Xs does natively. I used to shoot with my iPhone all the time, so much that I neglected my DSLR. Well all of that had changed, I don’t really shoot with my iPhone anymore, photos only look good on the iPhone. I still prefer my Sony A7r III camera bodies by a long shot. The iPhone is handy for reference photos etc. it’s nice to see Apple improve the camera some.... it’s about time! Now they just need a larger sensor like Samsung uses. Image below is from the X and ProCamera app.

I think you’re right. That’s actually a problem that I had with auto-HDR on my 8+. It almost never took an HDR shot, even in lightening situations where one would have obviously been better.

After a couple of weeks I stopped trusting it and resorted to setting HDR manually before every shot. Smart HDR on this years phones is far better and I’ve grown to trust it already.

I'm interested how the Pixel 3 camera will perform. The Pixel 2 and XS appear in parity.
Where pixel 2 has, and always falls short is video. Don't get me wrong, I love mine, however the video has always been somewhat jerky when panning or other types of movement cause many pixels (no pun intended) to change quickly.

I am hoping they get video figured out, and include Stereo mics on the next version too. If that ends up being the case, I am going to have to work really hard to have work replace my current pixel 2 ;) .

View attachment 786504 I took this in 2006. I think it was the Canon 1D with the 400 f/2.8. How’s the bokeh?

I’m not trolling. Different cameras for different applications.
It's a great and well composed shot, but what does this have to do with a thread on iPhone cameras? I shoot sports professionally too, but those cameras are not the point of this conversation.
I’ve never gotten color like this from a phone.

Nice shots! and we are neighbors (kinda) when I am at work in Minneapolis ;) .

That's a matter of opinion. I happen to think it's their best camera upgrade in years.

I use the ProCamera app and can still get better results with that app than the Xs does natively.

I'm not buying that, sorry.

It has a larger sensor this year. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 30% bigger.

Image below is from the X and ProCamera app.

I don't care for the looks of that. Outside looks over processed and unrealistic in my opinion. Everything is Green or Grey.

Photography is largely a matter of option most of the time. I guess I disagree with yours.

Some pictures I just took this morning. My wife isn’t a morning person but I’ll post that portrait anyway lol

iPhone XS Max with auto HDR

I think you’re right. That’s actually a problem that I had with auto-HDR on my 8+. It almost never took an HDR shot, even in lightening situations where one would have obviously been better.

So me being the moron that I am, I didn’t realize that turning off auto HDR would cause the manual option to return to the camera app. Your comment helped me figure that out. Thanks!

The XS Max camera clearly handles HDR better, but for full disclosure I want to now share two photos, both with HDR enabled. This will show that while the XSM still takes better photos in HDR, it’s not nearly the difference that my previous examples portrayed.

Yeah green and gray.. cloudy and rainy seen through tinted windows. So you are mostly correct.

Photography is largely a matter of option most of the time. I guess I disagree with yours.

“I don't care for the looks of that. Outside looks over processed and unrealistic in my opinion. Everything is Green or Grey.”

Yes green and gray... cloudy, rainy, seen through tinted windows. That makes the photo accurate.

That’s fine.. you don’t have to agree, After all, it’s a cell phone camera. It has many limitations.

Originally I decided not to upgrade from my X but the more I started watching some of the early reviews the more I wanted the XS and particularly for the camera features. Stopped in to my local T-Mobile store this morning at 8am and grabbed a gold 64GB XS (not Max)...taking some sample shots around the house this morning I can tell you that the improvements in highlights and shadows are tremendous! Apple really did a fantastic job with their dynamic HDR, wow. I also really love the new aperture slider. The speed improvements are slight but noticeable as well.
