@jamezr Where are you hiking? The shots are beautiful! I live in Phoenix, so most of mine are trails within 45 minutes of Phoenix. Occasionally we hit up the mountains in Flagstaff, Mogollon Rim, and Grand Canyon, but usually it's good 'ol desert running. :)
Hey @tekchic :)
I'm out in Mesa. The first hike was north of Payson up on the Mogollon rim. The lake hike and fishing was Willow Springs lake. From Mesa to the Rim...its about a 2 hour drive. I try to get up in the mountains at least every other weekend ;-)
We saw a pair of bald eagles dive and catch fish in the lake but they were too far away to get a good shot of them. They are so beautiful!

I was wondering if that was AZ! Looked kinda like hikes we've done on Mogollon Rim but wasn't sure. I love Payson, Pinetop, Strawberry, etc. Gorgeous pics! Time for me to head up north - still hot down here in the valley :D

yeah...it was 65 in the forest canopy today. So nice to turn off the AC in my truck. Then we drove home and it was 96 :-(

It’s not just about bokeh. That is it’s not only about depth of field. Different DSLR lenses that are f1.4 or f2.8 for longer lenses will give you different results especially when there are some kind of lights or reflections in the background. You’ll get different shapes and shades depending on the lenses being used. It’s more complicated than just creating blur.

That is correct. However, the way the software blurs the background is very similar to the way an average DSLR lens (general) do. I find that the bokeh slider blurs out the background just as good as an average DSLR lens.

See f/1.4 bokeh blur from the plant from the iPhone Xs Max which is to my average eyes blurs like a lens should

I’d be very disappointed if I produced a picture like that with my DSLR...sorry. It should have most of the plant in focus and sharp, while the background is blurred. The whole plant is inconsistently soft, and the only part that doesn’t look soft is the stem. Also looks like the shutter speed wasn’t ideal, as you can see the plant has moved while the photo was taken.

I am actually really unimpressed by most of the pics posted in this thread, particularly the ones taken in portrait mode.

I was hoping Apple could really improve from the X, but the camera changes seem marginal. I do agree that the low light photography does seem to be improved.

Unfortunately, I haven't really had time to test out the camera, so this is about the only "test" shot I've done, and it was a very very quick snapshot while sitting in my car before a run meetup this morning. I literally just rolled down the passenger window, zoomed in with X2 and shot, just to record the cool view from our starting point.

LaFerarri Aperta showing its stunning white frost color. Unfortunately the XS Max camera had some difficulty picking up the right shade of white but ultimately managed to get some stunning colors out of it.

This purple 720S has some beautiful pop that the camera did manage to pick up which is fantastic!

I was out and about. Quick snap.

I can pretty much tell you're semi-pro or pro photographer as you probably want an awe-inspiring photo every single shot. My point was the DOF at f/1.4 in the bokeh slider is very shallow there that only part of the plant is focused which is what I expect with that kind of aperture. If I bump the slider at f/5 or higher, the whole plant would be in focus but the crappy background will be revealed which I don't prefer at all.

I'll post a plant picture I took while walking at the park. If the image quality (NOT photography quality) of the portrait mode at f/4 of this one doesn't impress you then show me any smartphone that has a better sharpness, bokeh simulation, etc than this one WITHOUT editing.

the results in portrait mode with smart HDR on are pretty poor, a bit shocked actually!

And what are you going to do for a lens ?? :p.

The future is lens-less! :D

As a photographer, I'm not impressed by the camera upgrade. I want them to do a lot more on the computational front, I'm not sure that two camera modules gives them enough information. The biggest issue with the bokeh isn't how inaccurate it is but its lack of character.

Which camera phones are you comparing it to which causes you turn your nose up at it?

Another bad example. Hairs cut off. Look at the ears how they are way to over blurred.

I agree. Judging from various portrait photos in this thread the iPhone bokeh effect is still a 50% miss or hit, pretty bad results in my opinon.

i found out that bokeh is much worse when smart HDR is on.

Went and took some photos purely to test out the portrait mode in nature, haven't retouched or filtered anything (I was just around my apartment complex, so don't expect anything amazing lol). Had some decent results. It's still questionable with some of the depth control for leaves and whatnot, but not too shabby. Can't wait for the day that they merge the regular and portrait modes - would like to have all of these options on regular photos also.
