Took this at a Police vs. Fire charity game last night. The parking lot lamp that can be seen by the flag pole was actually very bright and I thought for sure it would ruin the photo, but it actually turned out pretty great! (minus the lens reflections)

Pro photographer here. Thank you all for sharing your photos! Some look fantastic! Others don’t. Yes a lot of that is differences in lighting, stabilization, focus points, HDR vs no HDR, user ability, etc. But let me tell you what I noticed with my Max compared to my 8+ when doing side by sides. The Max was producing sharper but noiser images. The 8+ was giving a softer more melty focus and considerable less noise. Hmmmm. While I like the idea of the smart HDR I’m thinking all the image consolidation has created some crappy digital grain and it sucks. I was so disappointed. Now, Part 2 to this story. My husband got the Max and I decided to do a side by side with his. BAM. His was beautiful! Not perfect, but waaaaay better. Performed exactly like I’d expect, and similar to some of the photos on here with beautiful contrast, low noise, and sharp details. WTF! I played with both Max’s for about an hour (doing side by sides with identical settings) before I concluded mine was a dud. Seriously! The photo quality was different and even obvious to my husbands untrained eye. Back to the store I went, swapped it out, and my new one is perfect. If you are noticing your camera seems to be taking awfully noisy pics (like real bad) then you might want to test it against a store phone and see if you notice a difference. In my case, my new one is great!! Also, I don’t expect dslr quality here, I just want what the phone specs are supposed to give. And for a casual snapshot scenario, this camera is awesome! (If you get a good one SMH)

Interesting, my camera has the problem you described, it produces a lot of noise in shadows. But it only happens when I shoot extreme dynamic range is required, say a picture composed with both really dark and extreme lights areas, I thought the noise was created because of all the bracketing the camera is doing. I mean, presumably all of the phones will have the same sensor right?

Did you test your husband's and your phone in exactly the same scenario? And did it have different results?

Thanks,

Thanks for sharing. Fortunately mine is noise free when taking photos even in the dark, hence me saying it’s DSLR quality in a smartphone package

Yes! I shot various different side by side pics in different rooms indoors and out. Different lighting etc. My pics were very noisy compared to his.

I will say this also. My screen was RIDICULOUSLY warm compared to his. Each year I feel like I always get the bad luck of yellow screens but usually they resolve themselves after usage and cool down. Part of the issue may have in fact been related to my screen calibration and his blacks showing true black where the digital noise was more obvious on my crappy contrasted screen. That is always a possibility to consider. I probably should have printed the photos or viewed them side by side on my desktop before storming over to Apple. To be honest, I was just pissed. In any case, regardless of the underlying issue, my new phone is fine! So there’s that.

I’m so sorry but in a rush to get the phone swapped out, I didn’t upload those test pics to iCloud (I do it manually). I was just so pissed I ran to Apple. I know this doesn’t help with my credibility but if you can trust me, there was a major difference.

Can you maybe point out images posted in this thread that had similar problems as yours?

I'll post a plant picture I took while walking at the park. If the image quality (NOT photography quality) of the portrait mode at f/4 of this one doesn't impress you then show me any smartphone that has a better sharpness, bokeh simulation, etc than this one WITHOUT editing.

Wait, so this is not DSLR? I'm amazed at how it detected the edges and blurred even the smallest gaps without failing.

Just the Xs Max while I jog/walk in the park yesterday (Saturday)
The more I look at it, the more impressed I become. Sure it depends on the lighting and other factors but it even left out the tiniest particles (hair-like) of the plant, this is ridiculous.

It was partly cloudy at the time, On sunny, it may not blur it as much as it is much harder to detect fine details when the lighting is not even

Here is one that is cropped to show noise detail (not zoomed) Both were taken in portrait mode and shot the exact same way. This example is exactly similar to the rest of the photos taken

EDITED TO ADD: I found one I texted to my husband. Posted below

thats crazy a phone took that.. how far we’ve come in phone camera tech.

Yep. It's a giant leap from my iPhone 6S for sure. I've tried moon shots with the Galaxy S9 from my relative back in the summer and while the moon crater is there, the shadows in the foreground appear more washed out and darker than the Xs. That's why I'm surprised with the Smart HDR from the Xs

I’m not a pro-photograph or not even an hobby photograph. But isn’t your photo a little bit out of focus? Seems there’s more difference than just the noise. Did both of you have the same settings?

Edit: His photo also seems to have a light source from the right, where’s yours don’t. Could that be the difference?

I knew posting one pic isn’t going to help much but in regards to that specific example, I was commenting more on the noise in the shadows and yes, the focusing was worse too! In all my side by sides, the crappy phone was slower and less accurate at focusing and showed more noise. That blacks were not accurate at all. While both pictures in this case aren’t perfect, I think it gives a general example of the noise. If you zoom in you can really see it well. This particular image was not only snapped once, but multiple times in a row in order to rule out variances in the way it was focused, light shining in, etc. Sadly I no longer have those other examples. This one I pulled from a text I sent to my husbands phone and all others were wiped when I swapped it out. :(

That looks amazing.

Though I have mixed messages about this, will the smart HDR photo labeled as smartHDR? Mine never had a label. But someone on another thread claims they got one.

Mine never had label as well unfortunately
