Saying screw you and upgrade to their 1st gen users isn't nice.

From what I can tell, they did basically the same thing with HD podcasts on the first-gen AppleTV, although those finally started working on mine again. Submitting problem reports to Apple didn't really seem to affect anything.

I can seem to see everything fine on the App Store, however the 'Install' button does nothing and the app reviews button doesn't seem to function either.

Also, I had the update issue mentioned however update all works fine.

Eye candy… Sigh…
Working Multitasking is "Eye candy" I guess…
And folders, who cares about them, eh? Just useless "eye candy"…

Same goes with Reminders, I guess…

It's a "custom firmware"…

Besides, Apple does not sell iOS…

It's no Worse than "Jailbreaking"…

That's nothing more then a 3.1.3 with a few custom MS extensions. It is much worse then jailbreaking. Those people are violating copyright rules is many countries by redistributing all of Apple's copyrighted code. Jailbreaking with programs like PwnageTool and redsn0w don't do this. Apple does indeed sell iOS 3.1.3 for the first and second generation iPod Touch, by downloading and using that firmware for the iPod Touch 1G and 2G, you are pirating.

You do realize those "custom MS extensions" were made by these people, j\

Jailbreaking also violates Apple's copyright rules…

The custom MS extensions are ripoffs of paid tweaks and hacks that are already available in Cydia. Jailbreaking is not a violation of Apple's copyright rules in the United States: https://www.macrumors.com/2010/07/26/u-s-government-to-explicitly-allow-iphone-jailbreaking/ Modern jailbreak tools do not redistribute any of Apple's code. This is why some jailbreaks take a bit of time to develop, the Dev-Team and others like them want the jailbreaks to be free from legal tangles with copyright laws.

Also on iOS5 devices

My iPad 2 (fully updated) also was having the same trouble when clicking the "buy" (or "free") button. Nothing was happening. I shut down the iPad and re-booted. Problem resolved.

Updates, app store not working......

As a registered developer and also have various apps in the iOS app store, I find it difficult to keep making apps that are compatible for the older versions of iOS (starting with version 3).

Even though I do understand that most users cannot upgrade to a new device every time Apple comes out with one (and I'm on the same boat) I'll eventually have to stop supporting older devices if we (the app developers) want our apps to user the newer features of a newer OS.

So, Apple will eventually have to leave the older users "out in the cold" if they want to expand and grow the OS over the next few years. That's just a known fact.

Okay, tell me which paid tweaks you are referring to.

No Problems for me

Have my old 8GB 1G 'Touch at work and when I heard this story downloaded "Christmas Story" just to see if I could and if it supported 3.1.3. The answer to both queries was "yes".

And yes, it is Jailbroken. :)

I haven't used whited00r since it came out. But I remember noticing that nearly everything was a poorly copied Cydia tweak that I had on my 3Gs. It could be different now, but then it was all piracy and poor code.

Boy has it changed… Or are you referring to http://www.blackdoorproject.com? I know they include a bunch of Paid Cydia tweaks…

Whited00r… Has…

Darlo's Multitasking, Wallpapers, and Folders…
Backgrounder
DataDeposit
Reminders
Newsstand

Everything else is mostly plist editing…

Pretty piss poor that this has happened. Apple is either having serious problems with staff not doing their job, or have decided to crap all over customers with older devices.

I'm pretty sure the "vast majority" of apps are designed to run on all versions of iOS, unless they're graphically intensive. That way developers are sure they're offering their apps to as many users as possible.

Most popular, higher quality apps that are actually actively updated require iOS4+. This has NOTHING to do with graphical intensity. It has everything to do with the apps utilizing api hooks and features that are introduced with new iOS versions.

My stubborn self just can't seem to stuff iOS 4 onto my old 1st gen iPhone... damn am I stubborn.

Your 1st gen phone has been out for 5 years and is 4 generations old. I can't see how any sane, reasonable individual can get outraged that support has dropped for a product that ancient. Especially in the mobile space. That's an eternity.

Hmm, some appstore items work for me on iPhone 2G 3.1.3 and others don't. For example:

So what?!? If (s)he is happy with it, why should it matter to you? Why should you be telling this person they HAVE to get a new phone? The first generation iPhone cost a bundle of $$. If it still works and the user is still happy with the experience, why should you be critical of them?

My iPod Touch 1G works FINE for what I use it for at work (playing music-what a novel concept). If someone steals it, I am out a 4 year-old device. It would suck but not nearly as bad as loosing an iPhone 4S. Usefulness should be in the eye of the beholder.

I know people don't like the fact Apple cuts off support and functionallity for old devices but is is one of the things that keep the things running smooth, althought the jury is still out on iOS-5. Look at M$ because they keep a great deal of backward compatablity it just doesn't run as well. The only thing I use my Touch 2G for is with iHeart radio plugged into a audio docking port

No it does not. Jailbreaking is 100% legal. All it does is void your warranty, assuming Apple can prove its previously been jailbroken as once you restore, theres no way of telling without extensive checks (or in most cases, its impossible to tell at all).
