So what?!? If (s)he is happy with it, why should it matter to you? Why should you be telling this person they HAVE to get a new phone? The first generation iPhone cost a bundle of $$. If it still works and the user is still happy with the experience, why should you be critical of them?

My iPod Touch 1G works FINE for what I use it for at work (playing music-what a novel concept). If someone steals it, I am out a 4 year-old device. It would suck but not nearly as bad as loosing an iPhone 4S. Usefulness should be in the eye of the beholder.

You sound absolutely insane. Where the hell did I tell the person to get a new phone?? Get some damn reading comprehension. I simply stated one cannot expected older hardware and software to be supported forever, that's an irrational and unrealistic expectation, and was emphasizing that the hardware is indeed old. Why would I care what phone anyone uses? Jesus, chill the f.ck out.

Mayhap because this isn't really an issue that should be caused by outdated hardware in the first place, and the software on it is not that old. Its just plain incompetence and poor service.

I know people don't like the fact Apple cuts off support and functionallity for old devices but is is one of the things that keep the things running smooth, althought the jury is still out on iOS-5. Look at M$ because they keep a great deal of backward compatablity it just doesn't run as well. The only thing I use my Touch 2G for is with iHeart radio plugged into a audio docking port

I disagree with 100% of what you just said

Mine now seems a lot better after signing out of my App Store Apple ID (Through iPhone Settings) and then signing back in once on the App Store

FWIW, I just took out my first gen iPod Touch and was able to update 7 apps (mainly music/radio players). So it doesn't seem to be a universal issue at least. But I wouldn't be happy either if it stopped working when it was functioning perfectly fine previously.

No it does not. Jailbreaking is 100% legal. All it does is void your warranty, assuming Apple can prove its previously been jailbroken as once you restore, theres no way of telling without extensive checks (or in most cases, its impossible to tell at all).

It breaks copyrights. Also, you should know that I am jailbroken…

No....it does not. Its 100% completely legal. Back your claims up with a source please. In a nutshell it was declared quite simply "My Device - I paid for it, I can do what the hell I like with it".

Clear enough for you now?

Pre-iOS 4 devices are positively prehistoric. It's time to upgrade people!

A lot of people on older devices are using hand-me-down's. One such example is my own mother. She's using my original iPhone and loves it. She has no desire to upgrade, especially when there is nothing at all wrong with the 1st Gen iPhone.

I can understand 1st Gen models being unsupported, but 18 months ago Apple were still selling the 3G, and even now they still sell the 3G. Really they need something like a 3 year support guarantee.

3.13 is ancient, 2 generations old now, and honestly I think it's well within the realm of acceptibility for Apple to disable new downloads. I mean, the vast majority of new apps require at least iOS4 anyway. If this needs to happen to make the appstore more efficient for everyone and enable new features, this is fine. Sure, some people will be pissed, but I think it's a very small minority of ACTIVE iPhone users who are still stuck on iOS3.

I just love the attitudes of people that aren't affected by things in this world. It's basically, "I'm not screwed so screw you" and comes out of "As long as I've got mine." This is the reason society in general is so screwed up. People don't care about other people's plights and this makes it that much easier to do things like send someone's job overseas. "It's just business."

I own a current generation iPod Touch that's not affected, but that certainly doesn't make my 1st gen iPod touch useless. I still use it everyday to play music at work and puzzle games on brakes, etc. and swap it with the new one when the battery is low and use either one to control my whole house audio/video system with the "Remote" app and when it's home I also surf the net during commercials some times to look things up, etc. It's hardly "ancient" and it still works fine.

Breaking it just to force me to get rid of it is stupid. I wouldn't buy another one. I'd just go back to using just one iPod Touch. So all Apple would accomplish is to make my life less convenient, except the next time I go to buy such a device I'll think twice about buying one by Apple since I'll remember how they tried to FORCE me to buy something newer. Never underestimate consumer resentment. Apple could find themselves right back in 1998 in a few years if their head gets too big and they start acting like the very companies they once sought to compete against as a cooler alternative. Nothing is less cool than acting like a fascist.

I've never seen that textured look before.

FYI: New apps do not NEED iOS4, in fact very few do. Apple basically enforces the app to show as being for iOS4+ only. When I compile mine, I always set them to the lowest option, which is 3.1.3 - meaning older iOS users should be able to use them (and I can install them on my 1st gen iTouch - they work fine). Its only once they are in the AppStore that they wont work on older devices.

Same problem

I have the same problem on my iPhone 2G running 3.1.3 :(
Sometimes I can`t download apps, others I can.

As of this morning - working again.

Not much time, but was able to update my "Apple Remote" app through the phone itself.

Didn't try anything else, though...

Edit:

Just purchased Tetris - works fine.

Old jailbroken iPhone 2G running 3.1.3 on T-Mobile USA.

Install Working again 1st Gen 2g

As of last night am able once again to use the App Store Install button. Tested on a few Apps that had updates waiting. OS 3.1.3 unlocked running on T-Mo.

Your 1st gen phone has been out for 5 years and is 4 generations old. I can't see how any sane, reasonable individual can get outraged that support has dropped for a product that ancient. Especially in the mobile space. That's an eternity.

I understand. It's now my 9 yr olds.
