If it wasn't for OS X I most likely would go buy a Sony or Lenovo. Apple's QC has gone down in the last few years. Granted I love my Blackbook (I have had 4 Macs before this current one),but I know others who have had big problems with the hardware (actually many). I love the cheap, plastic, Blackbook (insert sarcasm) and after seeing my friends new 2.0 alu Macbook and the problems he has had with it, I will wait until next year to buy one or get the Air or Pro. There is nothing wrong with demanding Apple to have good QC especially after spending a high premium for it.
LOL like Sony and Lenovo don't have quality problems, why is Apple always beating these companies in satisfaction ratings?

Why? OS X is a big reason. QC has gotten worse the last few years. Anyone who has owned Mac for number of yrs will admit that. Lenovo and Sony are well built (comparing their same priced laptops as Apple's----not their cheap ones).

Thanks for the grammar lesson, just figured out spotlight gave dictionary definitions, so no more errors from me.

I really dont think dead pixels are acceptable on a brand new computer, thats not being picky.

These scratches weren't like hair thin they were the size of thumb prints, like someone had taken an angle grinder to it.

People sure are passionate about Macs! I guess thats what got me thinking about one... all these people raving about them they must be good!!

I guess I just let my aesthetic expectations get to high, especially after the 20 min video with an english guy having some epiphany on camera about how they've reached laptop nirvana!

Dont get me wrong the performance and OS are surpassing my expectations, Spaces and expose FTW! bootcamp is awesome dug out a load of pc games and they ran at full settings without a hiccup....very impressed!

Dude. "English guy ... laptop nivana". I totally wish Jon Ive looked at these posts. That's fricking hilarious.
I read a lot of these posts on various topics (yes, I probably should go get a life), but your couple of posts here have made me laugh out loud more than any other. You write well, and you are very funny. Thanks for the smile.

I am lost for words at how ridiculous the whole situation is I've never had this issue with any PC's.

Wow. Sorry to read that you've had such trouble. You've been lucky on the PC side of things - I had something similar happen to me when buying a series of Sony Vaio notebooks a couple years ago. Bad backlights, entirely dead screens, multiple dead pixels and a dead fan, across 4 different notebooks. After the 1st replacement, the store (FutureShop in Canada) claimed the manufacturer had to deal with the defects, and I spent the next 3 months sending my machines to Sony via UPS.

In your case, I'd suggest contacting Apple support about the matter. I used to work as a salesperson and tech for a Mac retailer in Canada, and having an open ticket with Apple on an issue often helped us to push through the red tape.

Macs are good machines in general (as I'm sure people say the Sony's are - lol). It sounds as though you're having a string of bad luck, although I do find it disturbing that there were that many defects. 1st release issues?

I got one with no dead pixels, a tight battery cover, and no dents or scratches. I don't know how it slipped by them. Maybe I should take it back so they can inspect it. OMG! What if it's FAKE!!!??? OMG HELPZORS WTF???!!!

I got one like this. It was perfect-- then it locked up 7 times in 4 days, I got a replacement. No dead pixels, good battery cover, or dents or scratches, but the superdrive sounds really "grind-y." Not too worried about it though. It worked when installing WoW (9 discs total), and it will be gone as soon as some site puts out an all inclusive superdrive-to-2nd-HDD mod kit. haha. Also, old one had 9C89, New one has 9C8C... both look the same.

I love mine and I have the 2.4. I had the 2.0 and it had minor issues, but I figured if I had to live with this, I want it perfect. I also wanted the 2.4 and I am very happy.
I wonder if the issues are isolated to some areas? My issues again were very minor, but I also wanted the 2.4, some I used those minor issues to upgrade also (and the backlit keyboard works perfect for work and projects).

Cheers mate!! I am english too... although when I speak there are less dramatic pauses.

So you've been through 5 new macbooks? Sometimes I just find these stories hard to believe.

Its true!! I'll post pics of all the reciepts if you like, it was like a ticker tape parade in the apple store that day. I was passing them back macbooks quicker than they could scan and print them. It was quite emotionally draining!

Three

First one 2.0 had a crappy, washed out screen.
Second 2.4 had slanted keys.
Third 2.4 wouldn't play nice with my LCD display.

Finally said, frak it, got a MBP, and it's been flawless in every respect. When I count up the time I spent driving to the apple store, waiting for the appointments, and waiting on the stools, I spent more money in my time than I did on the upgrade to the MBP.

Crapheads at OKC Applestore charged me $169 restocking fee last time around, even though I had it documented machines were not working properly. SJobs@apple.com is getting an email.

Jambosive - Don't pay any attention to the people that are getting on your case. You did the right thing. You paid alot of money for a quality computer and just insisted that it be quality.
Those that are saying you should've been happy with what you got - they just don't have the courage to stand up for themselves, or don't mind the little blemishes. That's fine for them. But good for you for doing what's right for you.

I agree. For the premium you have to pay for Apple products, keep returning them until you get one that's perfect. Don't reward Apple for trying to increase profit margins by cutting QC. Return defective Apple products until you get one that's perfect... If more people did that, it would teach Apple a lesson.

+1.

I don't know why some would accept some defects in their computers. Would Apple accept $10 less than the asking selling price? I don't care if some call me "anal." The fact is it's my money and I'm prepared to part with it only if I'm satisfied with the product I'm buying.

Right but Apple's QC is better than their competition. And OSX doesn't mask up QC problems. If the quality of my laptop is crappy, why is the software going make me feel any better.

Right but people exchanging 5 macbooks in 3 days is an anomally.

Same here... 5. Magic number 5 seems to be ok, but now I'm paranoid. The HDD on the previous one started getting noisier after a couple of weeks... Will this do the same?!?!
It would've been nice tho to just walk away after the first trip to the store and be done with it.. The macbook itself is an awesome machine. I'm glad I waited. But the whole experience just didn't rise up to what everybody's been saying about Apple...

If everything else is good, call applecare and have them ship you a frakkin hard drive.

The HDD problem was just ONE of the issues my previous one had, and when that happened they just replaced the whole machine. but yes, if my HDD ever kicks the bucket i'll get a replacement from Apple.

Apples quality control is still the best in the industry. And so is their customer service.

Any other company would have laughed at you over 1 dead pixel. The law is a minimum of 5 dead pixels.

I have not noticed there quality control getting severely worse than what it was. The reason for the influx of these posts is because there marketshare is going up at a rate of 50% per year.

No doubt. Dealing with Apple Care was hassle-free .. SO FAR :) knocking on wood :D hehe

Customer service has been good to me personally, but I know people who haven't had good service from them. I guess that can be said for all companies. On QC, I disagree. I think their QC has drastically dropped lately.

I'm surprised Apple allows some people (because they don't allow this for everyone) to return their computer for one dead pixel. Their written policy I think says numerous dead ones (5 or more?) qualify for a replacement. I read it about 6 months ago so sorry if I have the number wrong.

God dammit, the slanted keys arn't that bad. I got a few on my laptop and i don't really give a crap, and apple will not give you a hand out. They really haven't done anything wrong.

I have owned
1 1994 145b powerbook
1 2001 400mhz Titanium PB
1 2001 500mhz Titanium PB
1 2002 667mhz Ti PB
1 2003 1ghz Ti PB
1 500mhz iBook
1 1ghz 12" iBook
1 1.33ghz 14" iBook
1 1.42ghz 14" iBook
1 1.5 12" PB combo
1 1.5ghz 12" PB superdrive
1 366mhz clamshell iBook

These are the laptops I've owned off the top of my head. I have never had any major issues with any of my Apples and I have never owned a PC. I also have owned an array of Mac desktops with the last being a G5 Powermac dual core 2.0 (last revision) which I am on now.

I returned the 2.0 Al book for speed reasons for a 2.4 that had a strange glitch (not pixel problem) yesterday. The 2.0 had slanted keys but that wasn't bothering me.

The second 2.4 al macbook I got yesterday is beachballing. It beachballed at start up asking me how I wanted to transfer information to my new mac!

Guess this is going back, too. I am wondering if it is the hard drive.
