I feel bad for all of these people that have had so many issues.

In my 40 years on this planet, I don't think I have ever had an electronic device that was cosmetically defective out of the box. And I guarantee you that my standards are not lower than others. I mean I don't get a magnifying glass out or inspect ever nook and cranny on the devices, but there have never been anything wrong where mine or anyone I knew could see anything wrong.

Oh, and I understand that it is more than a phone, but come on, these devices take a beating and in one week will have scratches or ironically cases covering the said defects anyway...

I'd be pretty furious myself. I won't even lie. But just think when you get it, it will be amazing, that I can guarantee. Just....don't grab a magnifying glass and dissect it.

I bought two (the second one is full-priced and unlocked), and both were flawless as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure if I took a magnifying glass or tested it in a dark room I could find something wrong for it. Granted, if it looked obviously beat up out of box I'd take it back, but I think a number of people may be taking advantage of a legitimate issue (a certain number of phones that are legitimately scratched or scuffed).

because the OP's story is so Unbelievable to begin with.:D
Normal scenario, the replacement (2nd) will be ok.. or the (3rd) in extreme cases.. but to go to a list up to 6th? that's just Delusional.

and the lack of pictures make this thread's reliability close to Zero point Zero.

Except he has a history of credible posting going back a long time. He raved about the iPad screen when he got it. I see no reason to attack his credibility. His judgement? Perhaps. But his post is certainly credible.

By collapsing any expectations I might have had about getting an iPhone that looks like new, without cosmetic damage, I've had a decent purchase experience this year.

My first iPhone 5 had several large scratches that were over an inch long, on the back, by the Apple logo. Having experienced this before on my new BTO MBP, I was prepared this time.

In addition I decided I'd do just one return and no more. So I took my original iPhone 5 back for another. Although it's not as bad, it still came with very noticeable but shorter scratches in the same area.

Reframing how I think about Apples lower level of quality control, has essentially make it "OK" that it looks used. Plus I have no further desire for cosmetic beauty.

After all, it's just a phone.

Bought my first at apple store in nj. 4 imperfections. Bought one for my son at the same time, his was flawless. Went to a different apple store in nj on Sunday and went through 3 boxes. All but the last had damage. When I got home, I realized that the one I took had silver bleeding through the black in two places on the ottom of the phone. Went back to original apple store tonight and went through 2 boxes before finding an almost perfect one. Took it. This is seriously nuts! Where is the QC?

Anyway, my message is, they have a ton of phones for exchange. If yours is damaged, go get a new one.

Not sure if qc is the issue. The issue is that the band / frame is now made of aluminum instead of stainless steel. Aluminum is very soft and dings / scratches easily. If you found a near perfect one, you better put it in a case like the spec candy shell to protect it. Otherwise you will surely ding / scratch it yourself in no time. That is what I did and that is the case I have now. Sure it's a beautiful phone, but this one is fragile.

6th iPhone 5? You are very patient. I would give a company 2 maybe 3 chances to get it right and if they don't meet my expectations I will take my dollars to their closest competition. 6 chances is way too many.

But the units in question aren't DOA. Granted, I wouldn't want my phone to look like someone played catch with it at the factory, but I wouldn't likely return it if it had a single small nick. Within a month or so last year, I noticed a small nick on the 4S antenna (barely noticeable if you didn't know it was there). After 11 months, that was the only flaw, so obviously it didn't speak to the long term durability of the phone.

With the black outer rim now it looks like a tan rust spot, so it looks more like an unfinished paint job. As far as Apple is concerned? Ummmm, sleep button doesn't work right.

Such bullshyt. I can't even get my pre order and this guy has been through 6? That's absolutely uncalled for.

This. Glad they have so many laying around and many of us are waiting weeks to get our 1st phone because the website wouldnt allow the order to go through until 1 hr after ordering began.

OCD people are different. Other than major defects such as obvious scratch out of the box or hardware malfunction, they'd return 6 iPhones that are perfectly acceptable to you.

Thats good to know, it could all be from the same batch that the damaged phones came from. Everyone I know with an iPhone 5 all have perfect ones. Do you know what week build your phone is, everyone that I know that have perfect ones all have a 34 week build.

my week 37 black is pristine

The op is the reason why I am without an iPhone 5 because the stores Are all out of stock and my pre order got screwed....thank you sir for feeling the need to go through 6 phones...I'm sure you don't have the ability to wait 14-20 days before you go back and exchange while the rest of us can actually buy an iphone:rolleyes:

Should have ordered promptly at 12am PST when they went on sale, then. For those who got defective iPhones, why should they have to wait longer than you to get one that works when they ordered before you? Not their fault that Apple botched a lot of iPhones. It is your own fault that you didn't preorder sooner, though.

I would have done the same thing. You've paid for a product that shouldn't have these issues. Why would you accept it? I certainly would have made them go through each and every box to get one without problems.

I did pre order and was supposed to get my phone launch day...that got pushed back...I pre ordered when everyone else did but apple pushed it back what did I do wrong? Nothing

My point is: if you open 6 boxes and each phone has a defect, then you can assume the entire batch of phones has a defect...so why not just wait a week or so till they get non-defect phones in? Yeah apple did botch those phones, so why not use some common sense after 6 boxes to realize that it's a manufacturing problem evident in multiple phones and once apple fixes it (they already know about it and are working on it) you will be able to pickup a flawless phone?

Hopefully when you finally get your phone all these QC issues will be sorted out.

Try doing this with a car and you'd be laughed off the lot and you pay exponentially more for it too
Wow you're wrong. If there were scratches and dents on a brand new car that dealership would be out of business. Think before you post. No one would walk out of a dealership with a new car with dents and scratches.

yes you can, i do and they take that price off the sticker, done it more than once...
also do this with major appliances (refrigerators, washer/dryers, stoves, etc) it's called scratched and dent...
now i wish apple would do that, i would take a blemished phone, hell i'm probably gonna put a case on it anyways
and when it's life is over it'll end up in the recycle bin

We are talking about OCD issues here, such as minute scratches that you can barely see when under the right angle of sun or a speck of dust in the paint or anything that is NOT OBVIOUS

We aren't talking about dents just like we aren't talking about shattered screens when one gets an iphone

We are talking about little things that will always be present if you look hard enough
