The third generation with a camera appeared in American retail shops, but shipped without the camera; even though the internals have room for one, and a prototype was seen sporting one.

That would be a fantastic plan if Apple wanted to sell exactly 0 iPhone 4S's.

I think the problem is the definition of what a 4S will be and a 5 will be. Assuming the 4S will be a device with little outward physical change but with a processor boost amongst others and the 5 with a physical redesign, larger screen they are at different price points. Think of the worldwide market and entry into new and less affluent countries.

True, thanks for the example. But in that case not having the camera just meant the case had an extra hole it didn't need, right? I assume the cases still fit and they probably sold them (maybe with a bit of a discount?). In this situations it's completely different dimensions so if the rumor is wrong it seems like these cases would be totally worthless.

I'd wager $100 on iPhone 4S only, plus an 8GB iPhone 4 if I was a betting man. No way there would be that little info leaked about iPhone 5.

You're kidding right? You don't think Apple's capable of keeping something completely under wraps? It actually wouldn't be that difficult.

Seeing as these cases probably only cost $0.30 each (based on DealExtreme prices), a batch of 30,000 would only set the company back 10 grand or do. Given the markup on the things, imagine how much money they could make if they sell them all in the few weeks after launch.

Even at $15 each, that's an easy half a mil- with a bit of risk.

who was talking about smartphones as a whole? we were talking iphones. apple has followed the revolution/evolution path with its iphone the whole time. the 3gs was evolutionary, iphone 4 revolutionary and the 4s/5 will be evolutionary. same form factor, better gear inside.

While it sounds like a big device. It's really not.
If I didn't have a real one next to it, I wouldn't have picked that it was any larger.

If they are making millions and millions of iphones ahead of the launch, what are the chances someone along the supply chain won't leak something? Wouldn't be that difficult? don't make me laugh.


We've seen iphone 4s leaks weeks before. people just didn't want to believe that they were the new iphone, because they wanted to believe in the 5.
