Maybe it's just me, but a quiet typewriter is an oxymoron.

Presumably, he could add sound effects to more closely mimic a real manual typewriter. That would be very cool.

Had he designed it as a USB keyboard/recharging dock, maybe, big maybe. I agree with all the ones that said it was a waste of time.

Thank you.
A waste of time not only for the typist, but think of all the time he spent making this thing. Does he live off his daddy's trust fund or somthing and can spend his life designing and making useless crap?

What pathetic nonsense. Does this guy have to run everything he does by you, assuming you're not too busy being so highly productive for the benefit of mankind.

As Someone who learned to type on my moms old mechanical typewriter this is cool as hell. Totally useless but COOL AS HELL!!!! It actually works.

Oh the glass is gorilla glass and the part touching the glass is soft rubber nothing really to worry about with the glass. Maybe long term use would cause it to create wear and somewhat craze or fog the glass slightly in the areas that the rubber "type-bars" hit. Heck the type bars would not even tangle up.

Wow

Fun concept, crap execution. Also, every time those hammers slap the screen I cringe. I can see the novelty in it, and I think it'd be fun if it was able to be used in normal (fast) typing. I just can't see it in this state as being anything but a concept.

Gorilla Glass on iPads? Really?

Can be done, but shouldn't be done.

Sorry, but this comes under the category of things which could be done, but which shouldn't be done. I agree with the previous reply stating that it's a waste of time.

I know and he should have learned enough programming to make a note pad app with invisible tap zones for the keyboard. Then i would have been impressed.

This gives apple fans like myself a bad name

Basically lazy idiots with too much time on their hands hanging out at Starbucks browsing Facebook drinking $4 coffee machiattos and unemployed. Oh and still living at home.

But hey I have a Mac book pro!

Thanks a lot

Here's the thing: I can understand making a one-off to show that you can do it and admitting that it has no practical purpose by calling it 'art'.

But, even then its silly to the extreme. Typewriters and their modern keyboard counterparts were / are designed to be practical utilitarian tools that aid their users in achieving their analogue / digital goals. This device does the oposite.

Reminds me a bit of the typewriter cum monitors in Terry Gilliam's movie Brazil. It's just missing the Fresnel lens in front:

Perhaps he made it in his spare time instead of posting whiny comments on rumour forums like some people do.

Brilliant!

I find the typewriter/iPad concept really humorous. It actually might even be fun. I bet my fingers would ache in a very short time, though.

Why not just make it a bluetooth typewriter style keyboard? No need to hammer the sceeen down for whatever reason. And make sure it has the right button feel and impact of a regular typewriter.

The classic sound of a typewriter keystroke can be made internal using some kind of mechanical hammer.

You can act as if the iPad is the paper, only it's not being hammered down.
