Enough already with the (i)Stats!

So, to sum up, 30.2% of smart phone subscribers have an iPhone while 34% of teens do... Then 40% plan to buy one in the next 6 months while 34% of teen plan to buy a Tablet, wheter or not they have an iPhone (which is weird because it's the same number as the teen who do have an iPhone)...

Ouch, my head hurts!

Anyway, I suspect those stats are somewhat related to the higher than high "$1000 Share Price" target predictions...

Hah. Yes, all of these kids with smartphones are not paying for the contracts or even thinking about how much they cost. The reason I don't have one is because my parents insist on me paying for my own cell phone plan. (I refuse to pay upwards of $1000 for a 2-year contract (voice, text, data), seeing as my income is relatively miniscule. :p)

When my kids go to high school all I'm gonna give them is a roll of quarters

A lot of assumptions here, but they're not always applicable.

It all depends on how the student acquired the device. If it was new from the carrier and subsidized, I agree that's a big 2 year commitment - $1,200 or so if the line is on a family plan, even more if not.

But if a parent upgrades to a 4S, gives their 3GS to their kid, and adds a new line for it to their contract... well, the picture changes a bit.

At AT&T, that new line is about ten bucks, plus a one-time activation fee, and a data plan (So assuming 3GB of data, maybe $50/month total with tax).

That's not beyond the resources of a student with a part time job.

And.. because the device is a hand-me-down, there's no subsidized phone, no 2 year contract, no ETF. The line is month-to-month, cancel anytime. It's more affordable than people think, if done right.

Sample pool is too small. But encouraging (as an AAPL owner) to see that they're getting into the iOS ecosystem early.

Now that I think about it, I wonder how many of these kids owned an iPod Touch before they owned an iPhone? So many pre-teens own Touches, and if Apple can retain those customers for life, that's bodes well for Apple's continued growth.

How is it too small? As long as you assume he took an SRS, 5600 students is enough to make generalizations AFAIK.

Only 1/3? At least 95% of smartphone users at my school use the iPhone.

its starting to get the opposite here in germany. i always get teased for my iPhone at uni. everyone goes like "can u send me this song ... oh wait" "any dropped calls?" "can u even read on this tiny display" etc

so annoying, i'm studying something tech related however so those trolls are all about "hardware specs" ^^

And what else? Do you want those students to pay for rent/food/books, etc and stop studying? OR should their parents not buy them good gadgets even though they can afford them?

i was just hinting at the american life style of paying everything "later" and on credit

you mean the same way apple still hasnt adapted the bigger screen sizes that clearly are the future of smartphones? apple is doing just that ... "we are number one, lets sit on our throne and just tweak around a little" iphone 4S anyone? it may work for now but it wont forever. i'd like to be proven other wise with the iPhone 5 but i'm not giving my hopes up for something REVOLUTIONARY anytime soon

You mean the way Apple is not leading with what they put in the third generation iPad? Just leap frogged again over the rest of the tablets. Next up the next iPhone.

That number really is disgusting. I'm all for success, but not a monopoly.

This guy again... I would actually call him an Apple hater. Watch him call me a blind worshipper for disagreeing.

30% is not a monopoly. The disgusting part is the competitors' phones.

Who said that? Did some analyst whisper that into your ear? What do you mean bigger screen sizes are the future? iPhone was itself a resurrection to a bigger screen size when 2" screens were the norm and considered the nano-future.

So you need a redesign after every 12-18 months. Surprising how Samsung/HTC/LG come up with literally the same shape/design every 3 months with an upgraded feature set. Apple has been releasing the same MacBookPros for years in a row now. They haven't changed the design drastically. So, would that imply its useless or just that the design is so brilliant that every PC manufacturer is copying them from top to bottom.

Looks like you know so much about the current state of the industry and its future. Why not get a job and try to prove something?

So you want a larger screen so you won't get teased?

I remember my cell phone in high school:

An iPhone is an expensive bit of kit. Do they take it to school?

I do, but in a case in an original iPod touch box. The case is good enough to keep it in my pocket, but I put the whole thing in the iPod box so it doesn't get smashed in my backpack or fall out of my pocket.

That is the whole western lifestyle. It's the some here in UK. It's the same here in almost the entire Europe. People live on debt and credit. It's the way businesses work; its the way, the governments have drafted their policies.

I know its not something to like, but just like the fact that you bitch All-Apple on MacRumors, you need a different forum to bitch All-America. Thanks.

When I was in high school (not that long ago, I'm in college), we weren't allowed to use any electronics on campus and would get them confiscated if discovered. This appeared to be standard procedure for most schools around the country. Do most high schools and middle schools allow the use of iPads and other devices in class now?

They allow iPads for note-taking (since they are the same as laptops when being used this way) and iPhones/iPods when not in class.
