How have you spent your time helping the people suffering in Japan? Seriously, I'm curious.

I've never lined up for a gadget, but comments such of the above are assinine. Trust me, if these people weren't in line, they'd be wasting their time some other random way, not helping Japan.

Agreed. Not everyone is a philanthropist; get over it.

Apple more so than others because of the rumors about parts shortages!

I would like to go along with the positive interpretation of the long lines, but gut feel tells me something is not right. This is not how Apple manages the launch. Regarding releasing info about the inventory, I do not know what you are talking about. I am talking about the basic courtesy to your purchasing public. Communication is the key and Apple has been mum about this since launch except one single sentence 'Demand has been amazing' or something like that.

Hope Apple rectifies this soon, preferably the supply constraints if not at least better communication.

I think Apple has made it pretty clear... They're distributing as fast as they're coming in and if you can't wait, most Apple stores are getting daily shipments and opening at 9am to distribute on a first come first serve basis. Check with your local store the evening before to see if they will be opening at 9am the following day. This is what I was told at the Apple store.

What else do you need to know? I'm not even sure what else they could tell? I'm sure they've given their big store partners more details about their warehouse shipments, but that has nothing to do with the general consumer.

There's no way to know if it's artificially generated supply shortages. Given the desire to keep things "secret" until the rollout must be incredibly difficult if they ramped up volumes significantly in advance (e.g. ipads would no doubt be leaked).

To your point, however, I do agree that they need to manage crowds better. I was there on launch day in Canada for the iPhone 4 at Square One and there were more than a few moments when the crowd was surging toward the door, arguments were breaking out in line, and the glass windows were straining inward dangerously. To paraphrase, it's all fun and games in the "first day line" until someone loses an eye. There's got to be a better way to manage this.

Much has been said about sheep, retards, stupid people etc etc etc . . .

Well, they say a picture is worth a thousand words so here we go. Are they scalpers or regular customers? Do they seem to belong to a certain racial group, or not? I'm tired of speaking the truth and being accused of racism, take a look for yourself...

Three Things...

1) I don't know what these people are doing with the iPads it is certainly possible some of them are buying them to ship over seas.

2) WTF. Can't you take a picture? Those pictures are all worthless. You can barely make out if there are people in them let alone what racial features they have.

3) You have no evidence as to why they are buying these devices or what they are doing with them. You are completely speculating. It is not like Asian Americans are not allowed to have Apple devices themselves.

There is no other way to say this but Apple completely screwed up this launch. I'm as big an Apple fan as anyone but?
1) No pre orders?
2) No online Apple Store inventory status checker?
3) No communication with customers standing in line at stores on inventory status?
All Apple needs to do is communicate with it's customers and im sure everyone will buy in, but so far no joy.....

The iPad 2 will stay in the mainstream media for at least a couple of months with all that is going on. How again is that a screw up? Maybe from your perspective, but from a business perspective, its sheer genius.

Now with all this media attention and product demand, WTF is up with Apple stock???

Besides shipping supplies to friends and donating money as well as writing our local politicians about the dangers of current nuclear power? I do what I can, I also am very politically active. As a gay man and an equal rights supporter, I have marched on Washington, supported our leaders who are pushing for equal rights, environmental awareness and protection by pushing the EPA to stop cutting back on regulations and begin adopting more clean, renewable and SAFE energy such as the hydrogen fuel cell vehicles currently used by our military thanks to the efforts of then Sen Hillary Clinton who brokered a deal with GM to build hydrogen fueled vehicles for our military. Toyota, Honda and Ford have hydrogen vehicles running in California with fueling stations running on solar paneling that does not tax other power sources. I spent time in the Gulf helping to clean up the BP oil on the shores and assisted a friend who works for National Geographic in documenting the disaster.

Should I go on with my "asinine" comment? As I said, it wasn't personal, it was an observation with the general American population. I meant no offense and by no means wish to grandstand at all, believe me. I'm just frustrated that most people don't care about the world and what is going on and are more interested in Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan and gadgets that are disposed of causing e-waste that pollutes our environment, leaching into water tables in the third world nations most of our garbage is disposed in causing disease and environmental destruction. I support Apple for its incredible advancements in making technology "green" without going red, and working in communications and IT part-time, I am on MacRumors to keep abreast on Apple's commitment.

This isn't to state that you or anyone doesn't care or are inactive. I don't know you or them, and that would be an assumption. My dismay is that people are spending their time and energy for a leisure device they can get in a few weeks. This isn't about me and sorry if anyone took offense and sorry if my above comment comes off haughty, not intended :).

You know what, it takes some effort to try to disprove a real problem so you need to be acknowledged. Get ready...

Agreed. My online order was pushed back to over a month from now, so I thought fine, I'll waste a couple hours... Well, I just got back from arriving three hours early at the Apple store hoping to wait in line. Turns out people had been camped out since 11 last night. Guess how many got iPads? Not even twenty. And there are seven locations selling iPads within an hour of here. They each got "around a dozen" in.

People are irritated. It's really looking more like a supply problem than exciting demand hysteria. These things have become a critical part of our workflow and we can't afford to not have them in use at this point... I've been on the fence about upgrading to ipad2 anyway. Perhaps I'll save myself some trouble and wait til iPad3. Since apple drastically devalued the iPad 1's anyway, it's not like we're going to be losing any more $ on these by keeping them another year.

Way to go, big A.

What, and have it be like the Verizon iPhone 4 launch - no lines?

Which, by the way, is being looked at being totally unsuccessful...

Apple could of waited for supplies to build up before releasing the ipad2 but they love the attention they're getting with the long lines. Apple is the biggest attention whore in the world. Normaly this wouldn't be a big deal but with the events in Japan it just makes them look bad.

Anyone know if the iPad - HDMI cables are in stock in stores like Best Buy or Target?

I would like to get one for a Keynote presentation I have on Tuesday but I'm not too keen on the Apple Store wait in the queue for hours game

Update: Yes you can find them at both Target and Best Buy. They show up in the in-store website searches as well so you can check before you go.

I just got back from the Rancho Cucamonga, California Store. At this store they do not allow for people to line up prior to the store opening. People show up in the middle of the night and are asked to leave by the Mall Security. Finally, about 7am about 60 people ran and stood in line and the security was unable to dispurse the people.

We were all standing in the pouring rain until about 830am when an Apple employee came out and said they have 9 iPad 2's available for sale, and he refused to tell us what type.

Dejected, I went home. I was number 25 in line, and I had been there since 430am.:(

I just got back from a Target Store and they have the VGA cables, but I did not see HDMI cables.

How to get iDevice on launch day without waiting in line

Went to apple store 15 minutes before closing, no lines. In and out in 10 minutes with iPad2.

Yes, there is a better way. For example, after the launch of the original iPad, you can get onto a wait list via the online store. Furthermore, you would select the model, Apple Store location, and provide an e-mail address. Then when your model became available, you'll get that e-mail to pickup your iPad at your primary store selection or a secondary store close by. This is how I received my first iPad and I feel that it was the most efficient manner to get the devices into the hands of the people without causing the current frustration.

I wonder how many people making fun of the people in line have waited in line t get an $8 coffee frm Starbucks.

I suspect if we broke down their typical week we could find 40-50 hours a week of wasteful / silly stuff they do every week.

Well the only evidence anyone has that this is going on is that a lot of these people are oriental. that is not really evidence, and if you review it is actually racist.

Bringing something more than a bunch of chinese people wait in lines for iPads. That doesn't mean even the most liberal standard of evidence/proof.

I think you do not get it. Apple gives people what they want - lines. These people want to stay in lines. They probably would not buy iPad if there were no lines for it. Considering that every one of them most likely already has a computer that can do everything iPad can and then some, obviously they do not really need an iPad right now and could wait but they do not. We all know that this is a cult and this is what cults do.

That was an interesting approach. I'm not sure if I can get behind it though
