OR, how awesome is the US where the only thing we have to stand in line for is a leisure device. Do you think any of the people in the line went hungry to buy the iPad? Too bad the rest of the world can't learn from the lesson we taught them: respect people's rights and work hard; the result is overwhelming prosperity; then they'd all be overweight and buying iPads too.

Superficially, it is awesome, but let's not forget the fundamental domestic inequalities that promoted that overwhelming prosperity. Nor the impacts that our actions--including lusting after technologies--have on food lines around the world.

You say "fundamental domestic inequalities" like that's a bad thing

Waiting in line right now and not ashamed of it. Actually, talking to the people around me has been pretty fun, and I've been able to get some work done while I wait!

Much has been said about sheep, retards, stupid people etc etc etc . . .

Well, they say a picture is worth a thousand words so here we go. Are they scalpers or regular customers? Do they seem to belong to a certain racial group, or not? I'm tired of speaking the truth and being accused of racism, take a look for yourself...

Why Apple is tolerating this ?

they should learn from the Soviet Union : only one iPad per family, only for local residents. And that's it !!!

Talk about a stroke of luck. We were driving through Austin last Tuesday on vacation and happened to drive down 6th Street. Spotted the temporary Apple store and an empty parking spot out front (ok, it was a loading zone) in and out in less than five mins. We weren't even looking for the store, just looking at the local sights. They had iPads stacked everywhere. Got exactly what I wanted.

We got my wife hers on launch day. No line, we walked in the local Wal-Mart about 5:15 and picked it up. They only had white though.

My sister ordered hers online as the store went active in her area on the 11th, she's stll waiting on hers, although she is enjoying the nice red cover.

queueing for electronic goods is moronic. it's sad that peoples desires and energies are directed in this fashion. (and im not necessarily exempting myself from such observations. although id never queue for a stupid ipad.)

and with stories like this, MR is going decidedly tabloid

Stoping being such a hater, you're just jealous someone else will be getting an iPad 2 first!

I can back you up on that... it is an objective observation. I saw it for myself too.

I can understand lining up for something for one day....but to do it each and every day makes me question not only the sanity of those people but if they even have jobs.

I wouldn't doubt most, if not all are scalpers. Sure makes Apple's policy for purchasing the first iPad at launch sound pretty good now.

We'll get that here too if the iPhone 4 was any indication. Hoards of Indian and Chinese students with wads of cash buying as many as they're allowed.
I'm not saying some aren't genuine buyers, and I don't actually blame them. If these products were released in China and India first, we'd have people queuing up for us. It's down to Apple's staggered global model. Through no fault of Apple though, it's a logistical thing.

You dirty dirty racists! :D

As I said in my post above, there's nothing wrong with what 'they're' doing. Demand for a product doesn't end at our borders. If things were the other way round, we'd have people flying over to India/China, buying them in bulk (Apple devices, not people!) and shipping them over. Apple need to bring release schedules closer together to stop consumers from feeling cheated.

so when is it acceptable? I waited in line for two hours to ride a roller coaster one time. Four hours to see then-candidate obama speak (i didn't get in). 45 minutes to ask arne duncan a question (he left when i was next in line). An entire day for the stewart/colbert rally (got some cool pictures, but never was close enough to see either personality). Five hours for the iphone4 on launch day.
There are other instances when i've waited for something that was not essential, but those come to mind now. You might say the iphone4 "experience" was the least valid, but i certainly got more actual, long-term reward and enjoyment from that wait that any of the others.

I'd probably reconsider the roller coaster.

I waited in line for one hour yesterday at the Huntsville, AL store. I was about 20th in line at 8 AM. A few people left when they announced not AT&T models a few minutes later. They started selling at 9 AM. There were a few people that showed up later that probably weren't able to get one.

iPods used to cost $500 and all they did was play music.

Southlake Apple store...

had short line (<50 folks) this morning. They had a whopping 10 ipads to sell.

I waited in line last week and got what I wanted, even after I got my online order to go through at 12:45am with 2-3 days delivery(needed 2 anyway).
I laugh at people who criticize other people for waiting in line, to think it actually bothers them is funny. They waste time writing silly posts as well as reading this thread and say what a waste of time waiting in line is? At least I'm getting something I want, use and enjoy immensely! What do you get out of wasting time worrying about us, the ones who wait in line.

I waited in line for the iPhone 3G on launch day, I was the last person that my friends and family thought would, it including myself. But I really was enjoying the first iPhone so I really wanted the new 3G so I went to my local Apple store about 2:30am the morning of launch. That's when the fun started, I met some very cool people and we were all talking about anything & everything.
The time flew by, I was within the first ten to go into store and got my iPhone 3G. I prefer ordering online like iPhone 3GS, I4 and first iPad but those delivered on launch day. That's why I decided to go get in line for iPad 2, I just like getting on the launch day and from my first experience waiting in line I new I would have a good time! It did turn out to be fun as I met a group of people, learned a few things and good conv. I only had to wait a total of
3 1/2 hrs to walk out of Apple store with the iPad 2 I wanted and the cool thing was for that wait, I had my choice of iPad 2's!:apple::apple::apple:

So don't knock it until you've tried it, believe me I never thought I would be able to do it!

Try Craiglist- I was able to get a 32 GB wifi-only version for only $50 above retail. Considering Best Buy wants to charge us $100 just to reserve a product they may not receive for another few weeks, I didn't think it was such a bad deal...

I can't remember the last time I stood in line for a chance at getting the latest thing. I haven't stood in line to get an Apple product, I just preorder it or order it and get it when it's ready. It's your time, but it seems like there are more interesting things to do with the same time. Especially with a high of 52˚F and low of 33˚F today at the 5th Ave. store pictured in the article.

Best comment in a while. Sad, but so true.

Agreed. All that time could be better spent helping out the less fortunate such as the people suffering in Japan or anything. I'm not stating that the iPad isn't worth it, but waiting in line for the latest gadget for hours (some days), and some returning if the store runs out when you can order online seems overkill. 'Course these might be the same people that criticized Apple for taking donations via iTunes. Not meaning to insult anyone here at all, far from it. This observation relates to a lot of American's and our obsession with material goods.

As an Apple Share Holder, this is awesome. The average user does not read these stupid rumor pages, but they're waiting in line.

And releasing information about their inventory would be stupid. Why give up their competitive edge.

Will there be a drought come this summer because of what's happening in Japan? Yes. But Apple has already secured their inventory and the parts are already in China for assembly. This is really going to hurt all of those tablets that we saw at CES.

Yeah, the whole stock market is down!

Apple more so than others because of the rumors about parts shortages!

I would like to go along with the positive interpretation of the long lines, but gut feel tells me something is not right. This is not how Apple manages the launch. Regarding releasing info about the inventory, I do not know what you are talking about. I am talking about the basic courtesy to your purchasing public. Communication is the key and Apple has been mum about this since launch except one single sentence 'Demand has been amazing' or something like that.

Hope Apple rectifies this soon, preferably the supply constraints if not at least better communication.

How have you spent your time helping the people suffering in Japan? Seriously, I'm curious.

I've never lined up for a gadget, but comments such of the above are assinine. Trust me, if these people weren't in line, they'd be wasting their time some other random way, not helping Japan.

Lol at people actually waiting in lines like this for an iPad I mean giant overpriced iPod.

People are still using the overpriced comment? Really? Overpriced compared to what? The iPad is the lowest priced, most functional product in the tablet market, you imbecile.
