LOL...funny how some people don't value the time they have left on this planet. Pissing away 13 hours sitting in a line of all things. No electronic device is worth that kind of price.

I have waited over 24 hours to get a ps3 and was not able to. Plus, I was like 72 in that line. At least, apple had more than Sony.

Even the North Koreans are laughing at how badly Apple has botched their iPad 2 launch. Not only are numerous customers being turned away but fights among people standing in line are becoming commonplace in NY. As a result, Apple and it's partners are opening themselves up to possible lawsuits for creating unsafe conditions. In fact, Best Buy suspended their pre-purchase iPad 2 program on Wednesday, March 16th because they could not meet exisiting demand and lines were becoming increasingly unruly. According to magangers at several Best Buy stores in New York, no stores have received a shipment for iPad 2 since the day before launch over a week ago.

Creating artifical demand when there is a loyal consumer base eager to buy the device is unacceptable. Apple, Best Buy and other companies need to do a better job controlling the delivery of their future products and provide a safe and reliable process to order products. Unfortunately, it will probably take someone getting seriously injured or hurt before something is done to manage this disaster.
What are you talking about?

This release was very successful. Not only are people talking about the iPad2 a week later, people are waiting in line for it.

There hasn't been another device that had lines like this a week a later!

In fact I don't believe any Android device has had lines as long as Apple is having after seven days on their first day.

As an Apple shareholder, I am not quite happy about what is going on. Not just because of the supply constraints, but because of the totally inept communication to the purchasing public about what is going on, what the expectations are about the supply and what they are doing to increase the supply and what is the ETA for it.. This is getting ridiculous. On top that, there are analyst idiots who are spreading rumors that Apple's manufacturers are seeing reduced manufacturing load on one hand and on the other end, another analyst uses the tear down based BOM to irresponsibly predict that there will be a parts shortage due to the Japan situation crippling Apple's ability to make enough products. The first one is totally out of left field and the latter one, though plausible, is just rumor mongering at this stage. All these rumors are just that but given the lack of communication from apple about the supply of iPad 2 in general, these kinds of rumors grow leg.

Apple should improve on their communication front and they should do it this weekend.
As an Apple Share Holder, this is awesome. The average user does not read these stupid rumor pages, but they're waiting in line.

And releasing information about their inventory would be stupid. Why give up their competitive edge.

Will there be a drought come this summer because of what's happening in Japan? Yes. But Apple has already secured their inventory and the parts are already in China for assembly. This is really going to hurt all of those tablets that we saw at CES.

Apple stock has dropped 6% this week by the way. http://www.google.com/finance?client=ob&q=NASDAQ:AAPL

Much has been said about sheep, retards, stupid people etc etc etc . . .

Well, they say a picture is worth a thousand words so here we go. Are they scalpers or regular customers? Do they seem to belong to a certain racial group, or not? I'm tired of speaking the truth and being accused of racism, take a look for yourself...

Does anyone know what time I should line up tomorrow to have a chance to get an iPad 2?

Good question. I'd say about midnight. If you have a friend buying one you can take turns as they allow two per person.

I went a couple of times this week. I went earlier and earlier and every day I was further back in line. No luck. Friday I got there about 6:00AM and was 23rd in line. They had 26 iPads. Since most people buy two I was out of luck.

It seems that the people earliest in line are just there to buy as many as possible and resell them somewhere. A family of four can buy 8 iPads and resell them for maybe a $300 premium each for a net gain of $2,400. Not bad for sitting outside an Apple store for ten hours. If they ship them to China maybe they get even more.

The problem with buying them at the store is selection is limited. I went three days. One day it was only Verizon types. The other they had mixed Verizon and WiFi. Today was only Verizon again. I'm guessing the online orders are running heavy to the ATT type as this can be used overseas. They satisfy the online orders and the rest go to the stores. The employee at the Apple store said they haven't seen a GSM model since launch day. My local store has been getting between 15 and 26 per day.

Camping/waiting in line for an ipad 2? Seems like pathetic people having nothing better to do...

Those people waiting in line are like gerbils in a maze looking for a pellet. Aren't they even slightly embarrased standing in long lines for what amounts to a toy? I'm kinda embarrassed for them. I'm not saying the ipad2 sucks I'm just saying it's not an essential item and the lines will be gone in a few days anyway. I feel the same way about people who wait in line for video game consioles, cell phones, ect So I'm not bashing Apple products in general. Camping out and waiting in long lines for non essential items is kinda ridiculous if you really think about it and the people doing it are retards.

It was embarrassment that stopped me lining up outside the Best Buy near my office last Friday. I just couldn't be one of those people. I ordered it online later on. I'd rather wait a few weeks with my slow poke 1G version than hang around outside like a daft chimp.

I have purchased the first 4 iphone generations and last year's iPad.

I was always worried that I would not be able to buy the product at launch.

Well, it finally happened. I blame myself for not deciding, which model I wanted. Now I feel like a fool, because I really want an iPad and now I have to wait 4 to 5 weeks to get one.

I will try this weekend again, but I feel that I have a very little chance that I will be able to get one.

I feel Apple launched this product a month before they wanted to. It is probably to distance themselves from the competition, and they were successful in doing that. They also generating a demand and supply problem.

Apple did not count on the earthquake in Japan, that may make them have a demand for supply for a while. Basically it is called greed.

How far ahead does Apple want to be from the competition?
Irony. Hypocrisy. Why is there so much in whiny geekdom?

i bought two ipad 2s on launch day. one for myself and one for a friend that was out of town. as soon as i left the mall my friend calls and says he doesn't want it anymore. WTF man! i was so tired at that point standing in line for 4 hours i just went home. I went to the apple store today to return the 2nd one and i got the wierdest stares from people. i guess they really wanted the ipad 2. i wonder if they re-sold it since i never opened it? mustve made someone happy right?

It's not a toy. It is an amazing computer.

And the iPad 2 is essential.

You're just jealous.

Are you for real??

On a side note, seems like the chinese scalpers are flooding the queue. I'm not surprised, happened with iphone 4 and the ipad last year.

First of all for a lot of people it is not a toy. Although that comment does give me some idea at where you are at in life.

Secondly people said the same thing when it went on sale. "I am not going to wait in line as in a couple days I can walk in a pick one up." Well it is more than a couple of days later and you see what is happening right?

By the way anyone who things this is because of some artificial supply chain restriction, is foolish. Apple is moving and selling as many iPads as quickly as they can.

I think that the supply situation is great...it has something for everyone!

For those who really want the Ipad 2, and are willing to wait in line for it, so what? It's their choice...I'm not even American, (one of your liberal Northern neighbours, currently living in the Middle East) but isn't that one of the tenets of the USA, having the freedom to choose?

And the whiners all mewling about "retards" (offensive by any standards, btw), hey it gives you one of the only few times you get to feel some sense of moral superiority! lol So what's not to like?!

I think this gent has the right idea:

What a Mo-Mo! Come on man...seriously? You're worried about getting hurt??? Waiting in line for a computer? Good Lord...Can't figure out how I made it to this age; not wearing a helmet on my bike as a kid....or having a seatbelt on in the car....or being "Smoked" around;) LOL...You need to grow a pair! Stand up for yourself, maybe go for a jog or lift a couple weights...then go jump in line for an iPad. My guess...you won't get beat up. But as they say, YMMV.

To the topic. I'm 40 this year. I've never, ever waited in line for any product on a release date. Never have *had! I did it this time. Jumped in line, local Wal Mart (cause everyone else was at Best Buy) at 1pm. 3rd in line. Got the rig I wanted. Done. In those 4 hours, I met a dozen folks that I now consider friends. Great people, excellent conversation....believe it or not, we all had slightly similar interests in life;) In fact...when a half dozen of us had our iPads in hand after 5 o'clock....we walked, in a pack across the street...right past all those folks STILL outside, in line...in the cold at Best Buy....and we were all able to pick up a Smart Case for our new toy.

There's a first for everything. For some reason...for me, it was justified this time. I'm pretty much an average American...almost forty, with a wife and young son, two mortgages and car payments. I absolutely did NOT feel like a dork, nerd, douche bag, or any of the spider feeding, downstairs at Mom's house living compliments some of you have thrown out. In fact....at 5:15, I felt....Smart! Intelligent....and Happy to own the iPad2 (I bought iPad1 day two of availability, locally...no wait at Best Buy!)

My $.02

J

PS akdj, I think we'd get along just fine. Looking at your gear list, what the heck do you do for a living?! :) My own arsenal is very similar: 5DII, 501.2L, 85IIL, 100L, 135L, 16-35L, 24-70L, 70-200IIL, waiting for the 1Ds3 replacement...cheers from Dubai.

What is really a shame is that you pointing out spelling errors and rolling your eyes at people seems to somehow make you think you are superior to them. When in fact the eye rolling makes me think you're a 12 year old girl.

lol wow, that my friend was a sad attempt at a verbal attack on me... really a 12 year old girl?

I take offense to that I will have you know I am a 27 year old man! lol and of all comments why pick on mine, really?

Just a friendly mention, in case anyone cares....

The Best Buy in Columbia, MO has had several iPad 2s for for a few days now. And the university has at least 20 of them sitting in back. Granted, you need a student ID for those; but I bet any student would do it for you for $25.

Seems odd everyone is flipping out to me. I have had NO problem finding them, and I'm not even getting one for the time being.

And I'm not a hoarder/eBayer (at least, not on purpose). Granted, it's a tragedy of the commons situation...

Amazing. On line i've checked all the Targets and Best Buys from Carmel to Redding and they have no stock. Apple stores get them daily in small quantities.

+1

queueing for electronic goods is moronic. it's sad that peoples desires and energies are directed in this fashion. (and im not necessarily exempting myself from such observations. although id never queue for a stupid ipad.)

and with stories like this, MR is going decidedly tabloid

Craziness!!!!

Holy crap this is crazy...but having said that, I just got mine yesterday shipped here to Sweden by my brother who lives in SF. He went in line last Tuesday mornig and there were like 500 people waiting in line. Then on Wednesday he had to travel to Tulsa OK for work and he went the the Apple store there and picked one up for me and my wife with no problems at all, although they were sold out of the white ones.

So I think that - as has been mentioned in other threads - that supply is very different depending on where you are in the country. There seem to be some midwestern Target stores for example that have no shortage whatsoever.

On a side note, this thing is superior in almost every single way to any computing device I has ever used before on so many levels. For one, it just works - and secondly, and limitations it seems to have appear to just be having to get used to doing things in a different way that you are used to with a traditional laptop/computer. I am simply amazed that it is so smooth and silky with EVERYTHING you throw at it!

I didn't have the first generation, but did get to use one a few times. This is an incremental improvement on a concept that definitely is the future of mass consumer computing products...or in the words of Apple, "Post PC Devices."

These are definitely replacing the laptops in our home - we have the Mac mini Server for just that purpose, a storage server, or if we ever really need to have a "real" computer.
