Tons of people one 8 or 8+, it is a very popular phone

The most unpopular iPhone in history is by far the 5c, which I owned in yellow

That was honestly one of Apple's worst products in recent memory. I also think it had the shortest availability apart from the iPad 3 which had a better successor within 6 months! I don't know why people didn't just buy a mint condition 5 from someone or a NIB discounted. It was their first attempt at making a stylish cheaper phone a la original iPod Mini but the only thing cheap about it was the plastic. The iPhone SE is a much better execution of what they were trying to accomplish.

They'd be able to if they controlled their spending in other parts of their lives. People waste so much money, it's unbelievable. And a lot of it is just paying too much for a commodity or on things that give them zero or even negative benefit, like portfolio fees.

Apple makes a $349, btw.

You got that right. The amount of people who waste money on multiple Starbucks and eating out every day is unbelievable. Just cutting one $5 coffee or whatever for 200 days covers the cost of an iPhone X.

If people waste that much money and don't have the $800 for a smartphone, then apparently they can't afford said smartphone, and need to re-evaluate their spending. Many other people just can't afford it in the first place, as they don't make enough money to have $800 sitting around for a smartphone.

The iPhone SE is several years old, and while the iPhone 4/5 size was the right size for a smartphone, unfortunately the industry, driven by Android's never-ending battery problems, moved to much larger screens, and now apps are developed for the larger screens.

I was thinking a NEW design with modern LTE banding, a 5" screen, top of the line single camera and such at the $400-$500 price point would be what most people would want out of an iPhone, even if it doesn't have all the latest bells and whistles in the processor and screen.

The Moto E and G series get new processors (lower end) and new LTE banding every year, yet Apple continues to sell old devices with old technology for $100-$200 less, which is no deal at all.

The iPhone 5c sort of flopped, as it was too expensive for what it was. At the right price, it might have succeeded. That was also right at the end of the carrier subsidy model, so I think I think they hit the $99 price point on contract, but they should have hit the "free" price point on contract to sell more of them.

I have an iPad 3, and it's shown it's age. I need to replace it at some point if I get serious about using it more (for magazine reading mostly).

5"? Unfortunately, apps have largely abandoned the iPhone SE form factor, and are focused on the 8/8+/X now.

Apps? Funny, but I didn't notice "Abandonment" in recent years on what is a fantastic device for my business, The 5S. Ohhh, not even as new as an SE, yet it does everything I need in fine fashion. Guess
I missed the memo to the "Fashion Babies" who need these supposed 'Apps" you speak of.
Not to dis-respect, but you must be talking about something few people require in real life.

Very few people require an iPhone in general in real life, so your casual condescending serves little purpose.

I'm not sure why you're arguing with me, I love the 4/5 form factor. I had a 4s, and I think it's the perfect size for a smartphone, but I've resigned myself to the fact that the whole industry has moved on from that, and is now developing apps for a 5"+ screen size. Further, the battery, camera, and RF performance is now best in the Plus-sized phones, so my next phone will most likely be a plus-sized phone, whether it's iPhone or Android. I'm not saying that apps won't run at all on an SE, but they have been optimized for larger screens and now will feel cramped on the small form factor.
