O2 statement

"Thank you for your interest in iPhone 3G. We are experiencing unprecedented demand for the device and whilst we are confident that all customers who want iPhone 3G will get one by the end of this summer, initial supply is limited and will be for some weeks. Here is what you need to know:

O2 and Carphone Warehouse (CPW) stores will have limited numbers of iPhone 3G this Friday 11 July.
On average, we will only have a few dozen iPhone 3Gs per store (some stores more, some stores less, dependant upon store size so we expect to sell out quickly). Sales of iPhone 3G will be limited to one per customer and two for business customers.
Some O2 stores will open at 8.02am on Friday, others a bit later. Find out more
If you do go into an O2 store you will need 2 forms of identification, a valid credit or debit card and proof of address. If you are new to O2 you will also need to pass a credit check if you sign up for an iPhone 3G contract. The average sales transaction processing time will be 20 minutes.
Apple will be selling iPhone 3Gs in their stores, but please note that existing O2 customers can only upgrade in an O2 or CPW store.
We are working closely with Apple to get additional iPhone 3Gs. These will be coming in on a weekly basis. We'll keep you posted on specific details by updating this web page regularly.
We are currently out of stock of iPhone 3Gs via our on-line store, we'll update through www.o2.co.uk when more information becomes available.
If you have an existing iPhone you can still enjoy many of the new features by upgrading your software to version 2.0 from 11 July through iTunes.
We are sorry that we can't meet all demand as quickly as we'd like but we're sure that when you get your new iPhone 3G you'll agree it's been worth the wait."

Great. Another fine mess with O2....end of the summer??! We'd be better off leaving monkeys to deal with this release! The vagueness of O2, "some stores will open at 8.02am, others a bit later" and "some stores have a few dozen some more, some less!"

They're not exactly going to lay bare the exact stock are they?

Go to a store, ask how many they have, and expect to get. Simple :)

i phoned my local o2 store in london and they said they would have both 8 and 16gb in black but no white. i asked how many they had in and the employee just said enough.

not sure what enough means but i don't think i will have a problem getting one at 9.02 tomorrow. there were only about 15 in line at the same store for the original iphone launch.

Enough is a non-commital statement. He won't know how many is enough. This has no comparison with the 1st launch. There have been 7 times as many registered interests - and it is clear some stores might have 25 if they are lucky. Some may already be "reserved" , some the wrong size for you - it will end in tears.

i'm sure the new iphone will be more popular than the first due to its cheaper price but the store is fairly large so i'm quietly confident. plus there is a CPW opposite which is handy.

oh and i meant to type 8.02 in my previous post (obviously)

and if CPW have 5 then within 40 minutes they will have gone too.

I'm reliably informed O2 sold 200,000 online and will initially have 250,000 to sell in stores.

That contradicts the written statement of the Head of Sales for O2 who stated they had 200,000 expressions of interest and that they only had enough allocated online stock for a very small proportion of those - they sold out within the hour. 250,000 split between retail does not equate to an average of a "few Dozen" per store.

I think your 3rd hand source is unrelaible.
