GIMP.app/Contents/MacOS/GIMP-bin: Bad CPU type in executable

Icon doesn't have a slash thru it like non-universal apps.

(Power PC running 10.5.8 - G4 7450)

That's odd, on the web site it says :

What kind of system do I need to run GIMP?

Any system capable of running Gnome 2, KDE 3.2, Windows 2000, Mac OS X and later versions should be able to run GIMP. GIMP's biggest appetite is for memory and how much you will need will depend on the how many images you are working with, their resolution, size, the number of layers you use and so on. As a general rule, more is better, but 128MB should be enough to be getting started with.

I have a powerbook 1.67 and would like to know before I download(on a capped internet), waste of DL Data if it does not run on PPC

Edit : Can somebody please check the executable in terminal, lipo -info path to executable in MacOS folder and post the output.

If it's open source, why wasn't this on OS X much earlier?
Just because it's opensource doesn't mean there are anyone with the skills, knowledge of the codebase, and the time and inclination to do a port. The trouble is, it's a big complicated project based on X11 and worse, GTK+ (a Linux graphics toolkit originally made for the Gimp, but since used for the Gnome desktop and other associated apps). This version uses the Quartz-version of GTK, which makes it a bit more native and easier to port, but it is still slow and clunky and despite a skin doesn't quite fit in, for instance the Open/Save dialog and the way the pallets and windows behave and widgets look, feel and act. To make a completely native version is a major undertaking requiring basically a total rewrite using Xcode and native frameworks where available for some functions instead of the myriad of Unix tools duplicating the native APIs, but most importantly in the GUI parts.
There is a truly native graphics editor based on a cut-down version of the Gimp, called Seashore, though it seems to not be actively maintained atm. It only has a fraction of the features though, and seems intended that way.

Funny why all the negatives?

Gimp is good for photos, and learning about editing bitmap files. Good for converting to CMYK for professional printing. But it is not a native app. It is not a photoshop replacement anymore than pixelmator or any other photo app.

As a business owner I do all my commercial work in either photoshop CS or Inkscape. Photoshops text tools are so much better than Gimp that is hard to make good looking ad copy in Gimp. Not impossible just more steps. As for x11 or not does not really matter to me. Inkscape is X11 and works great on all my machines. It is also much easier to use than Illustrator. I tried for a long time to figure out Illustrator and just got frustrated. Inkscape works the way you expect, every time. Once again it's about time, Inkscape is faster for me to use than Illustrator and at the end of the day that is the most important thing to me.

The funny thing to me is to hear all the comments how PS is so much more intuitive than Gimp. I remember not to long ago reading in forums much like this that it was not intuitive, and had a steep learning curve. That X program was so much nicer and they would not be switching to it because PS was just too hard to figure out. :) How times have changed.

GIMP ≠ professional app

Lack of 16bpc/32bpc color space in GIMP makes it completely useless for anything related to modern photography. And it makes it mostly useless for any serious designers who need smooth gradations of color/luminance.

If I could get it to launch at all (few days old new 2011 MBP, 10.7.4, nothing but bundled apps installed, new test user account) I could offer an opinion.

Aha! : ) The developer just posted p4 and says:

"p3 crashed if there was no config directory or if you launched it for the very first time. Updating from any prior version did not trigger the bug. Sorry. The most recent version is now p4 and is already online, so please update."

Bring out the GIMP.

But the GIMP is sleeping... ;-)

On a serious note, good to see the GIMP become native. A useful piece of software for those who want to start in image manipulation before moving onto some paid software.

----------

Just thought I'd go to the trouble of posting to state that I don't care in the least about this.

CS6 is where its at for now.

CS6 is very expensive for someone starting out.

----------

Leopard and earlier only? If this is true, I have to congratulate these guys on making software that only works with an OS that is ≥5 years old.

As others have said though, it's probably just buggy and is meant to work in Snow Leopard and later also. Does it work on your iMac? What OS is your iMac on?

Leopard and LATER is what his post said

----------

I know. The guys working on Gimp have had what...15 years now...to get this right. They keep saying that it's getting more and more powerful, and that's all fine, but it's just a mess still.

No this is the FIRST native release of GIMP for OSX.

----------

It costs $15.

Errr No, the GIMP is open source and free.

There is this excellent thing called Mac App Store. Why the hell would you release it on your website. I'm tired of getting my software this way.

Because being under the GPL, the GIMP's licence is not compatible with the Mac App Store.

OK, third times the charm : ) Anything past p1 is Mountain Lion only. And the only builds which are native are ML only. I've held back on going ML due to audio bugs with my pro audio apps, so I'll hopefully be checking out the latest version some time early 2013.

edit: I should have entered the full version on that, as it's not just an older build of the current version. The latest Gimp which runs on Lion is 2.8.0p1, and it is not native, you install Quartz.

Gimp only recently crashing...

I'm new to Gimp and things have been going swimmingly, but only recently (the last day) it's been crashing a lot. Any thoughts out there? I have plenty of memory so I don't think that's an issue. I know Gimp is a free program --thanks GIMP creators, and I would happily pay something for improved stability. With a huge adobe price tag, this has been a life saver. Thanks out there to any suggestions.

Pixelmator. It's the massive price of $14.99.

Or if you have an older Mac, Adobe offer Photoshop CS2 (direct link) for free.

Pixelmator is far more impressive than GIMP.

Good news....!

really glad to hear about. And not for me, X11 is an annoyance I can bear (bragging....). But always wanted to give an answer for people asking about a graphics editor no so full fledged and expensive as PS.

Really, really good news. Hope this release will be a very estable and bug free version....:D
