I sent an ebay question to the seller asking if they used an E-fix module or "hackintosh" methods to maintain OS X software update compatibility....the response was:

"We don't use either. We use full retail os and non modified it will update from the apple menu and runs 10.5.6."

sounds like a little BS to me....

Perhaps they replaced the board's original firmware with a bootleg copy of the EFI from a Mac Pro, assuming the statement is correct. Tricky, but not impossible, assuming the board used has the same or very similar components. For some reason, a Hackintosh seems far more likely. :p

it says 4x Firewire 1x400, 2x800 THAT EQUALS 3! am i the only one who picked up on that?

hmmmm, maybe there are 12 firewire ports in all? doubt it...

well... we will know soon, no reason to call BS. I'll let you know. Fed ex claims delivery tomorrow :)

Shady dealings in dark parking lots: Not just for weed anymore (Apparently).

welcome to the new economic era

I liked the old era better. Stupid markets, stupid derivatives, stupid selling short, stupid executives, stupid banks, stupid - well, you get the picture.

Back to the topic at hand though, that response makes them look about as legit as a 419 scam.

me too! :(

the the important part of the response is that the osx software updater should still work. i will get you a definite answer soon.

I was just looking around on ebay to see if I can find any amazing deals for a mac pro when I stumbled upon this.

OpenStar, a ripoff of psystar, which is a ripoff of Mac Pros :D

Do keep us posted....I'm really interested on how they maintain OS X compatibility when doing an update. Also, would like to know your impresions on build quality, how noisy it is, etc.

I'll create a new openstar user thread, with pictures and impressions, and of course problems/issues as they are encountered. :)

UPDATE at last

I am typing from my hackintosh right now as we speak. I am a very detailed observer, but I don't have the time right now to type them all.

I will do it later today or tomorrow.

The computer arrived awhile ago, though it did not work which made me go

But the guy was super responsive and I mailed it back to him (at my expense) and he sent me it again, and it works now. A few bugs I've noticed so far... quirks really. And the software updater indeed works.

thats all for now, expect more later... in a new thread

I bought one from the same guy on ebay 'invisiblemillionaire' and if I had to do over again I most definitely would not have.

Not all of the items that were listed in the auction were with the computer.

Did not include the OSX discs that were supposed to be included.

Inside was VERY sloppy. Many of the connections weren't connected which is a clear indication that it wasn't tested before being sent out. Also is an indication of the low quality and attention to detail of the build.

Overclocks the processors to achieve the GHz rating he listed in his auction. The one I purchased was supposed to be a 3.2 GHz but is actually an overclocked 2.8 GHz.

Most definitely NOT on par with a true mac.

eBay = Buyer Beware  :(

If you have a problem, eBay won't help. They'll put you in touch with the seller. On occasion, they ban the seller, but they can resume sales under a different new account. But the buyer is left out of pocket. End of story on that end.

Did you at least give him negative feedback? Up until a couple days ago he had 100% positives

There's a little debate with invisiblemillionare and another buyer/seller on the credibility on MAC CLONES and it seems that invisiblemillionare now has one negative. So much for his 100% b*llsh*t.

It doesn't pay to take short cuts. I'd rather go through the frustration of having more than one job and endless hours of work that to take a risk @ loosing money and looking like a jerk. I don't mean to rag on you sidneyhop and in no way I am, but next time don't gamble.

I was wondering if anyone of you with the openstar can tell me what type of motherboard they are using? Plus they are most likely using a retail install with the efi partition storing any modified kexts and efi strings, that is how they are able to use apple software updates.
