If there's an AI training on the garbage and junk humanity produces, they can name it Donald Trump.

For AI data sharing, OpenAI suggests a tiered system that would see AI tech shared with countries that follow "democratic AI principles," while blocking access to China and limiting access to countries that might leak data to China.
That will not work.

This just came out. So you think Apple knew about this when planning and development started years ago. Let’s give Apple a break here.

They must have known yes Sam Altman isn't new to controversies and anti-privacy behaviors

The China excuse while not as good as “to protect the children” is pretty good when used with the Trump administration.

“…cannot freely innovate while having to comply with "overly burdensome state laws”

Said every company ever about laws, statutes and regulations meant to keep them in check.

Laws for thee, not for me... Anyone who got screwed over by the RIAA during the Napster days should receive full restitution + interest + damages from Sam Altman's personal bank account.

So Apple must have known a few years ago that OpenAI would petition the government to exempt it from copyright law?

They’ve just been stealing data the whole time I7…This is not recent news that Apple was somehow unaware of. (though a few companies have gotten them to pay a little bit for their data.)
“Training” = stealing.

The sheer HUBRIS of this company and others like it blows my mind! If you want to use copywritten material, PAY FOR IT, you greedy mothers. Why is this so difficult to understand? That's what copyright is THERE for in the first place - so that bastards like you can't swoop in to steal and profit from the efforts of others.

The nerve of this just completely kills me. "We'd like permission to steal from the people we plan to make obsolete, thanks!" And the sad thing is, I'm sure they'll get that permission. What is the POINT of copyright, trademark, etc., if it's just going to be ignored?! Nauseating.

As someone pointed out elsewhere, what happens when the AI starts training on other AI-created content?

They already did train on copyrighted material without permission (like everyone else) and are now trying to cover their asses.

I'm going to pop into my nearest bookshop, photograph every page of every book, and walk out claiming it's "fair use". Why on Earth should the authors of those books get paid for their work? I mean, lazy sods, right?

No, not at all.

Hey, Altman! If you want to make your crappy LLM pattern-matching algorithm thing better, then pay for the data you train it on!

It's not "Artificial Intelligence" until it can be intelligent on its own. Feeding it stolen training data is not intelligence; it's stealing. If you steal, you get to go to court and pay the fines.

Yet another reason why I have never and will never use one of those "AI" tools. Just like Tesla, if you stop buying and using them, they will go out of business.

Maybe someone could explain this to Trump as follows: "You know how you make a lot of money from licencing your name for people to put on their buildings? Well, this is the equivalent of those people wanting to put your name on their building without paying you." He might actually get the implications of this proposal.

Why should they be the exception? Just legislate copyright laws out of existence and let’s all be in equal footing.

Then get ready for society to take a hit. Why should film studios bankroll films, when anyone can just use them for their own purposes. Same for books, video games & music. The next would be to abandon the patent system - then, why would any company pay billions to develop new drugs (or manufacturer existing drugs) when a generics company can simply sell knock-offs?

There were lots of red flags, the biggest one that I know of is the Worldcoin crypto project which scanned people iris biometric data and stored it without consent. The thing we know from Apple is their strong stance on privacy so it was a shock to see them partnering with OpenAI while there were other AI companies that offer similar products to ChatGPT and don't have CEOs with a history of violating people's privacy. It's not only Apple I mean the current US government pretty much endorsed OpenAI by inviting their CEO to the White House for the new AI infrastructure project.
