If it is a truly Jony Ive design, it will be beautiful. No buttons or ports, curved glass, super thin. It will also get about 4 hours of battery life and break if you look at it funny.
Or I just pictured the opposite scenario. What if he uses the opportunity to make a BlackBerry-style phone... with a butterfly keyboard!

Altman and his ilk know that it won't be. OpenAI is losing money hand-over-fist, so they need to keep the investor money flowing in. They throw this type of thing out ever six months or so to get more cash; previously it was Ive and his OpenAI egg-on-a-lanyard, or whatever is was supposed to be.
It was some type of wearable. That's when Apple decided to copy the idea. 😂

By the way, this announcement comes after a report that Amazon is developing another smartphone, codenamed "Transformer," expected to focus on AI, deep Alexa integration, and shopping. Sam stumbled, and now he's just trying to keep up with the other guys. (Of course, another Amazon phone is a terrible idea).

There are people happily paying for ChatGPT subscriptions. Offer that massive number of folks a bonus on their token use if the request is coming from a ChatGPT phone and they’ll have users from day one. It really doesn’t have to do anything much more than that as millions rely on ChatGPT to know how to dress, how to respond to people and what to eat. Spending less on their subscription is not an option for them.

Well, it’s not that those ChatGPT subscribers only have one app on their phone, though. Besides, different AI models are better for different tasks, so it is still good to have a device with access to different AI models. Who is going to get a separate ChatGPT, Gemini, Anthropic, Grok, etc. devices, when they can already use them all on a single smartphone?

To be fair, Satya killed all the remaining phone projects as soon as he took over. He knew the score.
It's a shame because the Surface phones were good. They make a good launcher too.
But it looks like Microsoft is slowly exiting all hardware businesses. ASUS and MSI will be making the next Xbox, the Surface laptop/tablet line is probably dead, etc.

In order to rival iPhone, you must not use Android tbh.
You must make your own OS.
I feel that the only people who could rival the iPhone was Microsoft, but they ended up flopping very early on.
Disruption is usually caused by a company you don’t expect, not a mega corp already in the space.

For example, Apple disrupted the cell phone industry. Tesla dominates EVs, not GM or Toyota.

I said for a while now that Apple is very susceptible to disruption by an AI phone because the hardware is easy and has been commoditized. Could Sam Altman do it? I don’t know but a truly useful AI phone WILL eat Apple’s lunch if they don’t get their act together very soon. Just look how fast Nokia and BlackBerry fell. Anyone who thinks Apple is different is in denial. It’s not a coincidence that Tim had to step down at this critical juncture.

Oh dear … so now that they finally (maybe) understand that AI is an App and no weird new gadget will replace the smartphone — they will try to beat the iPhone with their own phone? Yeah, good luck with that.

It’s not a coincidence that Tim had to step down at this critical juncture.
He "stepped up" to chairman of the board, leaving the CEO spot for someone younger. Conspiracy theories notwithstanding, he is of retirement age and needs to do less, but he is not leaving the company.

Rival? Maybe "Releasing product they hope will rival iPhone" or "Releasing product to compete with iPhone" but declaring a device a rival seems a bit... early.

"AI" as part of the name for a phone is a reason NOT to ever buy such a model. I have never seen a good or service forced on people so quickly without significant demand driving it. Maybe AI will be a revolution in the long run, but it has to prove itself first, and it has not done anything for me to date, except to make consumer electronics cost more. I suspect this product will be as big of a flop as the infamous Facebook phone.

And yet another rumored OpenAI product to never make it to the market. Every couple months we hear about some life changing product of theirs that’s just around the corner. Then they throw out ideas about products that already exist in an already saturated market.
